2009 F1 Round 1 Australian GP race: Button's second win, Brawn's historic 1-2
Amazing stuff, Button had a great start while Barrichello bogged down heavily. He braked too late into the first corner and basically caused the accident where Webber took out Kovalainen and Heidfeld. Webber is the unluckiest man in F1.
We had two safety cars, the first when Nakajima made a mistake over a kerb and thumped into the wall. The second came when there were a few laps to go when Vettel and Kubica tangled. Neither wanted to give up and it ended in tears. They were both at fault and it was clumsy, though the stewards judged Vettel was most at fault and he's been awarded a 10 place grid penalty for the next race in Malaysia.
Richard Branson strolled into F1 this weekend, Virgin is sponsoring Brawn, and the lucky sod saw Brawn get the first row of the grid AND a 1-2 finish.
This is Jenson Button's second win, he's been in F1 for 10 years and his first win came in Hungary 2006, a wet race where he started in P13.
Trulli started from the pit lane and got third, but he was judged to have overtaken Hamilton under the safety car. Thus Trulli received a 25 second penalty and Hamilton got third. He had a good drive with many good overtakes. Glock had some good moves against Alonso and Rosberg, a solid drive.

Alonso had a quiet race, didn't see much of him, but he got fifth due to Trulli's penalty.
Rosberg's Williams couldn't handle the super softs at the end and got overtaken by a lot of people, though he drove well and had some great attacking moves.
Buemi did a good job, he's the only rookie in the field and he scored two points and he held his own in the race. Bourdais was outshined today, but managed to get a point even though he started at the back.
Kimi Räikkönen spun and touched the wall. He was looking good and menacing the cars in front and would probably have been on the podium. Massa stopped with a technical problem.
The Force Indias were just out of the points, while BMW's Heidfeld's race was ruined because of the first corner tangle on the first lap.
Piquet disappointed, but apparently it was a brake failure which saw him spin on the straight and into the gravel trap.
It must be a bittersweet result for Honda, selling their team for £1, basically funding it. Honda did an honourable thing, but they must be feeling that maybe they have made a mistake, though the Honda engine wasn't as good as the Mercedes-Benz. However, Honda would have been allowed to upgrade their engine just like Renault was.
All in all, an entertaining race with lots of action and suspense. The non-consecutive tyre compounds seem to be working in that it's a really big tactical desicion to be made when to go on the option and when to use the prime.

What a race, if people come and say the regulations didn't help - they are outright lying :)
Ferrari lacks the pace, Red Bull looked strong in hands of Vettel. Webber had unfortunate incidents to hamper his way. Overly optimistic moves from Barichello. Good racing between Kubica & Vettel - although in my eyes, both are to blame.
Still, a bit too much politics got into the way, hopefully Malaysian GP will be clear of this.
And for those who said the cars will be slower - they are already faster than last year :)Posted 03-30-2009 at 07:37 PM by peoplessi -
Well, the fastest lap in the race last year was Kovy's 1:27.418 compared to Rosberg's 1:27.706, which is what counts, thus if the course lap record had been Kovalainen's it would have remained his.
The fastest time in Q2 last year was Hamilton's 1:25.187 compared to Barrichello's 1:24.783, but that may just be down to the one-lap pace of the slicks vs. grooved tyres. Schumacher's lap record was made in a year when the tyre war was in full swing and they had V10s, traction control and engine braking.
Barrichello was actually hit by Kovalainen, so I have to take back what I said about him causing the first corner mayhem. Poetic justice then that Kovalainen was the only one who retired from that incident.Posted 03-30-2009 at 08:28 PM by Bludd
