I suppose it's pretty safe to say that Duke Nukem 3D certainly qualifies, but what of the time before it was made? Basically, if it was 1994 or 1995 (or earlier if you want), and you had to put a stamp on a new Apogee game that would say "From the makers/publishers of X", and X had to be one single title, what would it be?

John Carmack on Functional Programming in C++

This looked like an interesting read. For those of you who are big in C++ game development, or any C++ development in general, it seems like Carmack let the dog loose with his thoughts on it, and it should be quite inspiring:

Probably everyone reading this has heard "functional programming" put forth as something that is supposed to bring benefits to software development, or even heard it touted as a silver bullet. However, a trip to Wikipedia for some more information can be initially off-putting, with early references to lambda calculus and formal systems. It isn't immediately clear what that has to do with writing better software.

My pragmatic summary: A large fraction of the flaws in software development are due to programmers not fully understanding all the possible states their code may execute in. In a multithreaded environment, the lack of understanding and the resulting problems are greatly amplified, almost to the point of panic if you are paying attention. Programming in a functional style makes the state presented to your code explicit, which makes it much easier to reason about, and, in a completely pure system, makes thread race conditions impossible.

I do believe that there is real value in pursuing functional programming, but it would be irresponsible to exhort everyone to abandon their C++ compilers and start coding in Lisp, Haskell, or, to be blunt, any other fringe language.

Anyone else playing the demo? I've pre-purchased the game.

I'm having a lot of fun playing the demo. The hit detection and bullet time is very satisfying. If there is a major organ or bone - you can hit it. My favorite hit of the moment is remote detonation when you hit a grenade that a nazi is carrying.

Has anyone played/heard about this one? It's an oldschool-style 2.5D FPS from a Brazilian studio called Espaco Informatica, which was released somewhere around 1999-2000. The game is said to have enjoyed popularity in its home country, but it seems to remain otherwise largely unknown. In 2009, the developers have made Hades 2 freeware to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the game.

The game's engine is quite comparable to the late 2.5D engines like Build. It uses high-resolution sprites, slopes, outdoor areas etc. etc., but of course for the time of its release it was already quite dated (which might have negatively affected its popularity). The sci-fi/horror plot is nothing special, but the game features a variety of weapons, enemies and hazards, all packed in a dynamic, interactive world. It has also reminded me of the Marathon games somewhat. At any rate, the game has an excellent retro look to it, and it has an overall good, quality design.
