What was the last movie or TV show you watched?

Let's get this sub-forum started, shall we?

The last movie I watched was Gone Girl this past weekend.

EXCELLENT film. I've never read the novel so I had no expectations coming into it. I thought it was great! Excellent casting too.

The Conjuring

Pretty good suspense/horror film. They didn't go overboard on the haunting stuff so that definitely helped. Also, they had a solid cast.

But, still not anywhere near scary. Solid atmosphere and mood... but, that's all.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Batman Returns.
It was the only Batman movie I had never seen. I think cosmic forces were at work protecting me, keeping me away from it all these years. I really hated it. The DeVito Penguin fat-suit was idiotic. His body is already abnormal enough to not need that. Walken seemed out of place. Maybe it was just the hair. Definitely tied with Batman & Robin for worst live action Batman film.

Welcome, you must now be the 6th guy on the Internet to agree with me on this. Sigh.

Rewatched the A-Team. Great adaptation of the TV show. Sharlto Copley as Murdock had some hilarious moments.

The Robocop reboot. Surprisingly, it was good. Hit the right notes with a story more centered around an amputee than a machine. Had some nods to the original franchise with the portrayal of the media and some minor references.

Yeah, I liked it as well.
It's what a reboot should be in my eyes.... completely different. Trying to be it's own thing instead of retelling the same story.

And it couldn't just have a new title and thusly a whole new identity because....? MONEY. :p

The recent Godzilla. I thought it was alright. I think they got rid of Bryan Cranston way too damn soon. Dude was rocking every scene and then poof, gone. Damnit. Also the fight scenes came off as a little dark near the end, though i'm not sure if that was the film itself or my brother's glaring TV. Either way I enjoyed it and look forward to what they do with the franchise next.

I loved it. Very dark and gritty portrayal of WW2. The characters aren't always "nice" either, which I think added to the realism.

The sound editing was awesome too.

Looking forward to Interstellar now.

I had heard of Caligula, how it was a depraved, yet historically accurate, telling of the life of Emperor Caligula featuring a young Malcolm McDowell. It seemed like the sort of thing you'd have to have seen at least once.

What I didn't know is that about half of the film's running time is straight-up hardcore pornography.

I can see why people would love, or hate, the film. It has an odd, haunting quality to it. It's one of those films that's hard to shake off after having seen it. I don't know if I would say I enjoyed it, or that it's particularly good. But it's certainly interesting, that's for sure.

Took in Interstellar last weekend.

Excellent film and IMO, one of the best Sci-Fi films in the genre.

Opinions seem to be polarizing on this one though, but I thought the movie had a thought provoking message. I also enjoyed the "human survival instinct" theme.

Has anyone else seen it?

Surprised to see that it was released on consoles! :) I'm assuming that this was available, obviously, on PSN as well (knowing that it was a SONY made movie, you would clearly think they'd release in on their own console network).

Also I got Guardians of the Galaxy DVD for xmas. It is a great film.

The story is a bit complicated, if you have not read some of the comics and you won't get the hidden gems. If you think it's bad now, wait till later. There is also some crossover type events happening. With some things I know that will change and evolve. But having all this going on it feels like an ongoing saga.
Stay tuned.:dopefish:

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Haha, I saw Alien Nation as a kid, finally say it again just a few years ago, I really enjoyed it. Not amazing, but memorable.

Saw "Chronicle" (2012) - wasn't crazy about the found footage style, but it worked. I really enjoyed the movie, mostly because it felt things people would actually go trough if it happened to them.

Also; "Blue Ruin" (2013) - just like movies which feel realistic, not over the top action or crazy explosions. Sometimes the most quiet moments are the most effective. The main actor didn't say much, but his facial expressions where great.

Id recommend both movies, but of course it's not movies for everyone.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

"Flashbacks of a Fool"

Not a particularly good movie. As soon as it's over, most people will say, "What was the point of that?". I read that the writer/director wanted to turn a song (his favorite, I guess) into a film. Not an easy thing to do when the lyrics are somewhat abstract. But if you reconsider the film in those terms, then you have to admit that he succeeded brilliantly. That still doesn't make it a good movie.

It does include one incredibly sexy lip-synching scene (of the song in question) by the still somewhat underknown Felicity Jones.

Watch this and forget about the rest of the movie:

Was great. Yes, I know it's not completely accurate... and it leaves out a lot of the more negative things about him, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a damn good movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I never heard of flashbacks of fool but sounds like an interesting project, probably would work better as a short film then a feature, not that I know which it is. I give props for people to try different things, but yes going into it without context can make for a disappointing experience.
---------------------------
I saw;
L.A. Confidential (1997)

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pu...confi_9104.jpg

I saw this as a young teen, and thought it was interesting. I saw this just recently and thought it was stellar. What amazing script, actors and overall film.

Cyperpunk and Noir are my favorite Genres, so being played in the 50's after the war is a favored setting for me and it definitely had elements I enjoy.
I now realize how heavily L.A. Noir took inspiration for all sorts of Noir movies and movies of that time. It's like the creators of Rockstar checked what where the best noire movies and took elements of each. Which is funny because after watching LA NOIRE I figured for a favorite genre I haven't watch much of it. So digged up a list and found all sorts of inspiration in the movies I saw.

Which mind you is a good thing because it's good, but also makes LANOIRE slightly derivative, but luckely still it's own story and thing.

For those who haven't seen it, or it's been a really long time, I recommend it.
If you like LA Confidential, make sure to check;
Chinatown (1974)
The Untouchables (1987)

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Saw it about a week ago.

I enjoyed it more then the first. Found the writing to be better, dialog was vastly improved... the actions scenes were better, camera work overall was better.

But, that's not saying much as I personally think the first Avengers is horribly overrated. It's not bad... but, in the world of the Marvel Universe... it's... meh. Okay. But nothing special.
But, I've always felt Joss Whedon was an overblown director. Everyone throws all this praise to him because of Firefly... and, to me, the best thing he's ever done was 'Cabin in the Woods'.

Maybe Avengers 3 will be better since he's not directing and the guys that did Cap American: Winter Soldier are doing it. Because that movie was pretty awesome.

Nomads (1986)

This is another one of those movies where the main character dies at the beginning and the rest of the story focuses on retelling the events leading up to that moment. This film offers a twist on that formula, however. And somewhat of a shock ending, I suppose. It's interesting. Could have used a few revisions. A nice diversion if you're burned out on superhero movies.

Oh yeah, its great, but its pretty dumb :p

Does it retcon the events of the first movie? I cant tell really, like at the end of the first one the cameras zooms into Ash then it ends, then that happens near the beginning of the second one, but he's only there with his girlfriend, not a group of four

Damien_Azreal 08-04-2015 06:58 AM

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The first 15 minutes or so of Evil Dead 2 are a quick/dirty remake of the first film.
It doesn't recon them.

In Ash's world, he lost his sister, girlfriend and best friend in that cabin.

It's great to get reactions of people who don't know what's going on. People like "Why is he going back to that cabin with a new girlfriend after what happened in the first film?" :p

I never knew about that live action film up until now. Might check it out.
The cartoon you can find on ebay, but is quite expensive.

Saw The Martian last night.

Excellent film. Perfect balance of humor and action. Kept me engaged the entire time. I have not read the book, but if the film is half as good as the book, the book should be awesome.

G.B.F

Great movie. Right up there with Mystery Team, which i also just recently saw a few months ago.

Watched Primer.
Great film about time travel, but it's really complicated

Watched 2 Broke Girls on TV. It's lowbrow, but it makes me laugh. :)

Six-String Samurai

Of all the Mad Max-Wizard of Oz-Sixth Sense-Highlander mashups out there, this one is definitely my favorite.
Featuring the maybe/maybe not wandering spirit of Buddy Holly as a desert phantom fighting an eternal struggle to preserve Rock and Roll against the onslaught of Pop, Hip Hop, Metal, and Communism, this low budget indie succeeds with Style and Concept, even when saddled with a heavy dose of "My Next Door Neighbor" acting performances.
The events of the story are open to interpretation, of course. This film sits firmly in the middle of the Surrealism genre. Other viewers take it more literally. But I prefer it the way I see it.

Here's a gif I made to give you a tiny sample of the content.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Loved it because it was Star Wars. The real Star Wars, with no pod races and no Jar-Jar.

The intelligent part of my brain has been trying to tell me for 3 days now that the script could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

But I loved it.

Because it's Star Wars.

I'm confused... :insomnia: :(

Enter The Void

This is the worst movie ever made.

If an enormous meteorite destroyed France, all those other 70 million deaths would be a small price to pay if it meant obliterating this film's creator.

So incredibly bad it becomes great.
Saw together with a mate, we laughed so hard just because of how shitty it was made. I recommend it to see in group with lots of booze, you'll have fun.

Terminator: Genisys

The actors performed their parts well. The action is choreographed in a reasonably entertaining manner. The visual effects are above average. The camerawork is pretty nice. But...
This is an all-timer of a bad script. Whoever wrote it should definitely be banned from the film industry forever.

The Wolverine

I can't think of anything to complain about with this movie. I just found it a little dull. However, I have no emotional attachment to the character of Wolverine. I suppose fans love this film. Review scores for it are very good. I'd like to see this creative team tackle another property.

So you found it dull, but you can't complain about it?
That is a riddle.

Nobody complains about crackers. They're not offensive to the taste buds.
Yet, I think it's perfectly legitimate to call them "dull".
Such is The Wolverine.

Star Wars The Force Awakens on IMAX 3D - Finally.

Felt like Star Wars, which was a big plus (main issue with Abrams' Star Trek). Simple Hero's Journey plot with characters not bogged down by needless complexities (minus a slightly ambiguous ending) and who had fairly straightforward relationships was a breath of fresh air. The action sequences were real and way better than the cg videogame platforming crap that plagued the prequels and every single Peter Jackson Hobbit movie. Was not a fan of Spoiler:

Re: What was the last movie or TV show you watched?

As for your spoiler.
I will say, Abrams did not write the film. The writer on TFA was the same guy that wrote Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Arc.

So, the idea to include something like that and then get rid of it in the same film isn't really... new for this series.

But, I was glad it didn't devolve into a series of political debates and awful CGI locations.
And, while there was a rescue element to the film... it wasn't as bad as it was in A New Hope.
Or hell, the original trilogy in general. Ep 4, save the princess. Ep 5, save Han and the princess. Ep 6, Save Han. ;)

I wasn't aware of that and should have checked this. I was under the impression that these were well established in canon or that may have featured in other non-canon media (like the Jedi Knight games). It's not bad at all for stuff that's newly introduced.

Flesh and Bone

A show about people who hate themselves.
For people who hate themselves.

I suspect Starz committed to this series based solely on that one award-winning episode of Breaking Bad from the creator (that's why I tried it out). But this isn't entertainment. It's just a bunch of rotten people wallowing in misery. There are no protagonists. No one to care about. It's no wonder there won't be a second season.
