even if it means integrating sprites into it. look at HL2, they used sprites both for fire and for explosions, i still find HL2 will some of the most impressive graphics and that engine is about 4 years old.
The particle effects in this video are about 6 months old and most of the combat fx have been replaced by now with new hotness.
