Wacky Wheels code snippet
Since everybody seems to be asking for source code all the time here is a snippet from Wacky Wheels.
It loads the Dope fish frames and Joe's Belch voice file and finally plots the fish. Joe thought I could have picked a better Belch as he gave me several to work with. However we were about to ship and I got my own way in the end Love all those global variables. Hey remember it's 1994 here!!! void load_dope(void) { if(!dope_loaded) { lib_find("DOPE.SP"); lib_read(gigdat,11895); if(playeng) { lib_find("BELCH.VOC"); lib_read(my_voc,3481); } } dope_ptr=gigdat; bubble_ptr=gigdat+11520; dope_stage=0; dope_frame=0; dope_y=199; dope_x=120; bubble_on=0; bubble_x=176; dope_time=tickframes; dope_loaded=1; } void plot_dope(void) { bsp=dope_ptr+(dope_frame*5760); scx=dope_x; scy=dope_y; dep=72; wid=80; if(scy<=199) plotclip(); if(bubble_on) { bsp=bubble_ptr; wid=25; dep=15; scx=bubble_x; scy=bubble_y; if(bubble_on==1) { scx++; bubble_on=2; } else { scx--; bubble_on=1; } if(scy<=199) plotclip(); if(bubble_y==110) { bubble_on=0; } else { bubble_y-=2; if(bubble_y<110) bubble_y=110; } } switch(dope_stage) { case 0: dope_y-=8; if(dope_y<=112) { dope_y=112; dope_stage=1; dope_time=tickframes; } break; case 1: if(rtdif(dope_time)>=16) { dope_stage=2; dope_frame=1; dope_time=tickframes; bubble_on=1; bubble_y=dope_y+37; play_my_voc(); } break; case 2: if(rtdif(dope_time)>=20) { dope_stage=3; dope_frame=0; } break; case 3: dope_y+=4; if(dope_y>199) dopefish=0; break; } } ------------------ |

The guys at 3DR couldn't care less - it's not really their game. They just distributed it. Beavis Soft did all the grunt work.

Hey! Cool!
Nice of you to drop by Andy. Just a few questions. What did you think of Wacky Wheels? Were you and your team pleased with it over all? What are your thoughts on Mario Kart 64? Any plans for a sequel?(I had to ask! ------------------ Ajaxx ICQ#15069804 I know why you wanna hate me...cuz hate is all the world has even seen lately--Fred Durst

The main problem was Doom was out and people wanted blood! The PC game players were,and I suppose still are, mainly young male adults who really didn't care to much for furry little animals driving lawn mowers! So from a commercial point of view it wasn't so great. However we feel really proud of the game and I still get a kick that thousands of people out there played it and liked it. I really like Mario Kart 64 it's just so well balanced. Well we would love to make a sequel but are too busy trying to make a living! Over the last few years we have been doing a lot of 3D modelling and Multimedia stuff. This picture is actually from a QuickTime movie but that's a bit too big to download. Shaun,the original Wacky Wheels artist,did a mock up of a new Kart and a new Aardvark character that we are using in a interactive childrens book. I think we will always stay with the kids mainly because I am such a big kid Cheers Andy You can't throw hog's at real life drivers! Re: Wacky Wheels code snippet
Cool. Thanks for answering, Andy (Or Ancientcoder if you prefer).
I remember I used to play Wacky Wheels against my little brother(and get trounced). I liked that when you drive in water, a periscope rises. That was a stroke of genius. You're still visible, so it's fair, but not too visible. It was espescially good in battle mode. I was real glad that this game was made because I remember how much fun everybody was having with Mario Kart on their Super Nintendos and I only had a computer with no game of that type around for it. It would've been great to get a game similar to Mario Kart 64 for the PC, but you're right. Most people nowadays won't pay attention to a game unless it has an instantly recognizable pop-icon or over the top Violence. Sad but true. Thanks again. ------------------ Ajaxx ICQ#15069804 I know why you wanna hate me...cuz hate is all the world has even seen lately--Fred Durst

Let's not forget the Broomman, Ed the Duck and that stupid VR cat face. If you can remember the Broomman you're going back a bit, when Andy Crane was on telly, and he hasn't been seen since Bad Influence. They insulted the ZX spectrum. Bah.

However I went over to Texas for a few months and developed some of it over there. I nearly boiled to death over there! Scott took us in his car round Garland and if it wasn't for the air con we would have melted. The artist was in Norfolk (UK), I was in Lancashire the musician was in Mississippi and the publisher in Texas! And somehow we all managed to communicate over a 9600 baud modem using terminal emulation Now I live near Cambridge (UK) and Shaun is still in Norfolk. Were are you from? ------------------ |

Source code? Posted?? Here?!?!? LOL! I though I'd never see that happen! Even though he said that it was just a joke for everyone asking for source code(I'm wondering if half the people that ask even know how to program ). Before I saw that he worked on WW I thought that somebody had somehow gotten the source code(government conspiracy, j\k ), and posted it here.
Anyways, I'd really like to see a Wacky Wheels 2, maybe with 3D graphics like Mario Kart 64, but I know that it's most likely "not gonna happen". btw Ancient Coder, do you still work at Beavis Soft(I know that the name was changed, just can't remember what it is, what is the company called now?)? |

Wow, thanks for the code! Copying it into Borland C++ 4.5 dos now Still reckon dos code is best code, just ask Ken Silverman whoose new Voxel 3d engine is dos-based!
Any chance of getting more WW code? Interested in the network stuff too! Its fantastic to have you posting! WW was a truely fantastic game, and even though their was some 'stolen' code Skunny Carts just didn't cut it - didn't have the art, music, "feel" atmosphere etc. BTW did you work on any other game projects for Apogee? |
