Something interesting happend with the Epic hompage and forum for a short while.

Seems like they are trying to cover it up now as form threads are aperantly being removed as soon as they are posted. Beyondunreal also pulled the news story so just this thread is left.

http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=189029

Either some viral marketing, a mistake with their servers or they got hacked. Not sure what it is.

Like they say on the forums, maybe it's demonstration of updated engine? Without clear proof I won't believe that they will get back to Unreal games again. UT3 is not Unreal game.

If it would be a sequel to Unreal though, I have even less hope that it will be a true sequel. It will be something like Unreal 2. With the only connection to Unreal being the name and skaarjs.

Random comment, I hated that they turned skaarjs into fat overmuscular orks in U2.

It sure is strange though that they keep on deleting all threads and topic without acknowledging that they have been hacked or they are up to something new. They just want to hide the something completely, trying to remove all traces of it ? Why what are they hiding. Here is the pic that they are desperately trying to hide

Now I wouldn't min an Unreal III myself. If it is Unreal III, then bring it on. I am all for it !

I wouldn't mind a good single player story line with gorgeous unreal environments to back it up . Honestly I think Epic Games are trying to hide something. Why would a hacker post something like "It's Unreal. And it's almost here" if he/she sucessfully hacked their web site. He/she could have have posted something like " This web site has been hacked" or "Owned" or "pawned" or something similar. In any case I doubt a hacker would post a message that would contain a message "almost here". The terms "almost here" make me believe something is cooking secretly at Epic Games. Either its the game Unreal 3 or a new engine - Unreal Engine 4.

I'd be first in line for a proper Unreal 1 follow-up. Unfortunately, the days of games like that are gone forever, replaced by products for . . . . sigh . . . another audience.

Graphics are second or third IMO.
Solid, entertaining gameplay is always first. Followed by a decent story/setting.

If it is Unreal 3, I could be excited for it. I didn't like the first one, but I really enjoyed Unreal 2.

I don't think it can be UE4. It's a while away. 2012 is the estimated date IIRC.

It's looking like a mistake by EPIC.

As mentioned, UE4 is a few years away, EPIC claimed they were not working on Unreal 3 earlier this year and UT is said to be on a "break".

Both the beyond unreal thread and the one on NeoGAF is gone now so it seems like EPIC want people forget this ever happened. Which makes you wonder if something is cooking just not ready to be announced yet. I mean they have 2 dev teams, one probably working on GOW3 so the other one has to be working on something, right?

I agree about graphics being 2nd or 3rd, but disagree with the latter part. LOVED Unreal & Return to Na Pali , thought U2 was worse than used toilet paper .

For me it was the complete opposite. The first game was something new. U2 was just an engine demo where they had completely lost the feeling from the first game.

For me, the original Unreal started out really good.
But the the game just kept going and going, dragging on. Weapons looked cool, but felt very underwhelming to me. Which made the combat feel a bit lifeless.

They could've easily trimmed some sections out of levels, making the game's pacing much better.

Unreal 2.... yeah, it's not a triple A product. It's campy, cheesy and stupid. But that's why I love it. It tries to take itself so seriously, but it's so damn over the top.
It feels like you're playing the lead character in one of those crappy b-level science fiction movies they would play on TV, late Saturday night.

The thing I liked most about the original unreal was there was more than one way to get through a lot of the levels, and I really enjoyed exploring it.

Somehow I liked that even the less fun levels were long because it made you how to say... put your mind into that place. You don't just pass on to the next level quickly. Like wheny you are inte the toxic facility with the face pacing music and dodging of the rockets from the cyborg creatures it has it's own feel that place. When you reach the exit it really feels like you have come to something different. The only place that felt unecesseary was the Dasa pass/cellars. That's the place I don't remember much of. They could have made the skaarj ship a big more interresting. The lab area didn't look like some kind of lab at all. :S I liked that the game was long. Return to Na Pali wasn't very good. Only real interresting place was the crashed ship I think.

Weapons were a big weak yes that bothered me a bit too. Especially rocket shooter and minigun. Only flakcannon and rifle had some real damage. Razorjack could sever heads but that was no easy task. I always wished one could use those blades to slash with.

My only real problems with U2 is the game was too short. Way too short. And there was no gibbing. It shouldn't be seen as a sequel to Unreal since it clearly was not. It just had a creature with the name skaarj (who could bloody block bullets with their wrist blades) from Unreal 1. Oh btw all weapons looks like they were made of solid steel chuncks with the weight of 50kg.

Exploring and non-linear levels was in many old games. Those things are gone now. Anyway speaking of it, it wasn't untill like 3rd time I played the game untill I discovered the dungeons in the dark arena. :O Some weeks ago i discoverd a few new rooms in ISV Kran.

There's something very appealing about a game that's trying out something completely new for the first time. (Unreal, Deus Ex, Half-Life, etc). The developers are usually showcasing new technology and are charting completely unexplored territory, so they tend to take a lot more risks. They also tend to be new companies who are hungry for a hit.

I think once a franchise gets established and they start making sequels, developers tend to fall into "Hollywood" mode. The stories become much more predictable and formula-driven, they don't take risks as much. And you're building sequels on a universe that your audience is already familiar with.

Watch them pull a Bioshock

Unreal 3; this time, YOU play as the Skaarj

Which, IMO, would be very, VERY qaudruple-asterisk-ing awesome

Running around and ripping people to shreds.

Hell, you could even have allies, and just annihilate the weaker civilizations.

I see one of the biggest things about Unreal is the lack of companions, allies. Player might meet some friendly nali but they don't follow him around or relly help him alot. They don't even speak the same language. Unreal is supposed to be lonly. :P

As for me, I prefer Unreal and Return to Napali any day over Unreal 2. Unreal 2 is so lifeless and story-less I kept on just playing the next levels to see some "kool" looking maps or levels. I hope if they are working on Unreal 3, they do put in gorgeous envioronmenst like Unreal 2 but a bit more intense and involving story driven experience to drive through those epic envioronments one after another.

It's not like they care for us PC Gamers anymore, so why should I care about them?

They need to drop the unreal series and do something new.
( and I mean ALL UNREAL GAMES, yes that means tournament, championship, etc )

I wish they would make another UT/UC like it, and I don't specifically mean the melee, but in general.

I actually think I ended up using the AutoMag (Enforcer) the most. Insta-hits from any range, pretty good rate of fire, spot-on accuracy...just a great weapon to chip away at enemies. ASMD Rifle was a beauty as well.

I would strongly disagree. Gears 2, IMO, is far superior. To me, the first game felt dull and boring after the first few levels.
