I agree that they should make a new Duke Nukem game, not apologize. However, I love Duke Nukem Forever. So make Duke Nukem 5. However, that won't happen.

Despite my feelings about what we ended up getting, it is still just a game in fact.

They don't owe us anything.

3D Realms will almost certainly never make another Duke Nukem game, they sold the IP and will probably never be able to afford to buy it back again.

3D Realms is a smaller company now, so their future is unknown. No idea if they'll buy back the Duke IP, but Gearbox runs that show now.

At least Gearbox gets to build the next game from scratch, so there's little chance of it looking as dated or the team goofing off for a longer than normal period of time.

I don't care, DNF is good(but I guess Gearbox would make it better but they're not...) and no 3DR/Apogee, no DN.

Let's hope Gearbox would not screw up their new shit.

What is with the constant assumption that 3DR is currently in the same shape financially as it was in May 2009 and is forever doomed to stay at that level? Heck we have no idea what their financial situation was like back in May 2009. Only that whatever their situation was, they had to let the DNF team go.

Edit:

However it is very unlikely that they WILL ever buy back the Duke IP even if they will be able to afford it. As for them making any in new Duke games? Well in late 2009 Scott Miller mentioned several Duke games being on the way, the deal will GBX will not have changed that since 3DR still has the right to everything pre-DNF. We have no idea about the status of any of those games or what they were, other than that a couple of them were iOS games.

3D Realms doesn't have to apologize to anyone. Their shame will follow them everywhere. The will always be in the hall of shame with the makers of Daikatana. Duke fans never forget. If Duke was here, he'd surely stick their heads up their own rear ends.

Yep... 3D Realms should apologize for allowing too many non-fans too much noise on this site.

I see all this "fan let down" crap like this... if you (the forum member with hurt butt) crash your car (your car) into something, it isn't good. End of story. You don't have a forum or a company.

When George Broussard crashed his car (3D Realms) THOUSANDS of us passengers (fans) are riding on, then it makes news... but the reality is that it is still one crash, and we all got on Georges ride free of charge, and of our own choosing.

People make mistakes, the number of people affect by the mistakes is the only difference between your mistakes and Georges. You never let your kids down before? Your friends maybe? Your daddy never let you down before? If you believe that the number of people affected by your choices makes much of a difference in those choices, then you probably aren't very realistic relative to choices involved in something the scale of making a game. Sometimes the best you can do isn't good enough anyway.

I don't want or need any apology. They did the best they could and it wasn't good enough. At least this game is more fun to me than my original copy of Daikatana.

Apogee is doing a new Rise of the Triad game, so far that is as much as we know, Apogee said a few months back that there was an announcement coming soon but when that is who knows?

3D Realms owes us absolutely nothing, we knew with 14 years of astronomically high expectations that DNF wouldn't live up to expectations.

DNF is done, that chapter is closed, 3D Realms have passed the torch to Gearbox and i feel that Gearbox is a good home for Duke Nukem.

Re: 3d realms should apologize to their fans
I don't even know if GBX will make another Duke title.

Just by the name alone, DNF seemed like it was a "final" title. Even down to the long development time.

Sometimes it's better to just let something be history, throw it all out of the window, and start fresh. 3D Realms gets a chance to do that. I hope they make some cool stuff. I used to be like 7 or something playing this stuff on windows 3.1 and the n64 later in my pre teens.

The sales for DNF were not good for GBX. I'd have to echo with the guys above, saying that they won't buy the IP back. I'd also have to go further and predict that there will never be a new Duke game again.

The guys who even know anything about it are getting a bit older now. 20s, at the lowest age group. They knew they needed to have COD style mechanics to win the 16-18 "game 24 hrs a day till i die and sleep in class" crowd, but it wasn't right. None of them even know that you used to have to type in text commands to get your computer to work. It just doesn't belong in 2011, it should've been released 12 years ago like it was supposed to or the team should've been cut and future projects dropped at the tenth major sign of trouble instead of the two hundredth sign, a lawsuit, tons of employees, and 5 3-d engines later.

I like to think that Gearbox bought the Duke franchise and and DNF so they could get DNF out the door and start developing new games with the IP. DNF was a good test for how to adjust Duke for a new, much more sensitive audience and not much more. I mean, yeah, DNF pretty much dragged the Duke franchise through the mud (mostly because of people's ridiculously inflated expectations for it), but I still think there's a lot of potential, in the franchise even if an announcement of a new Duke game would make people at places like Giant Bomb whine about how Duke is mean and offensive at first.

Is expecting a game not to play like Halo that hard to expect now a days?

Whats with that constant flawed logic. Is creativity all but dead?

Probably because the people who make that observation are making it from the standpoint of "game is first-person, is gun-toting, designed for action, has checkpoints, similar movement speed" etc. So in that sense (without, you know, thinking - let alone thinking any further) then yes, I can agree. But I can also point out that pretty much every modern FPS is that way inclined.

Yes. I love how people throw out "It's got two weapons, it's got scripted sequences and linear levels... "
Like how Medal of Honor had two weapons, or Half-Life used scripted sequences and linear level design.

Or... REGEN HEALTH!!! Which, that was Call of Duty 2. HALO used a rebounding shield with a health bar and medkits. HALO 2, still the rebounding shield... but you had health underneath. And a couple hits... you were dead.

That wouldn't explain why its still in use to retroactively describe games that had maze-like levels, keycard objectives and health packs. No, I believe the use of "Doom conventions" extends to games today to differentiate them from the Halo-inspired approach. Just look at Serious Sam, even though its not really Doom.

Halo and Doom are considered archetypal because they achieved new bursts of popularity in their time. Half-life was/is considered to be an archetype for scripted linearity.

A brief glance of the search results I linked to earlier shows half of the top 10 listed date to no earlier than 2008 so I'd say the term remains in usage.

Now we hear the word "clone" substituted with "rip-off" or "inspired" but it comes to the same thing. It's all semantics. What term is now used depends on individual taste and whether one appreciates or is critical of a style of gameplay. In Doom's time, not deviating far from its formula was seen as a lack of originality and got the clone label but once HL and especially Halo came around to offer recognizable alternatives that established standards with their success, it became fashionable to be "inspired" by the old Doom formula. Moreover, with the increased variations in design approaches & some genre blending, you could have a game predominantly borrow from one of the archetypes yet take enough from another or do something different so as to sidestep the "clone" label. But mine is just one opinion.

Heh...there may have been Deus Ex clones on the market, too, but I'll leave that one alone. Although the DX formula would be difficult to master, since it includes all sorts of genres wrapped up into first-person perspective. Doubt a Duke game would take after that approach.

Re: 3d realms should apologize to their fans
DNF is all about point a to point b new style storyline FPS. The other duke games were as well, but when it came to items and stuff you found it was much more random. It's those fighting for your life random ammo/health packs a la doom with the little sideshow stuff and the Duke character that made the game fun. That's the reason why the "halo complaint" is out there... I wonder what would happen if gearbox bought out RWS or contracted them and just told them to make a Duke game. I bet it would be badass...
