The most disturbing thing about DNF's delay...
...is that it was their first 3D game, and it's still not out. We're in 2010. "Real" 3D in gaming came in 1996, the same year as Duke Nukem 3D. This will be the 15th year of 3D gaming, and we have such crazy graphics like the ones in Crysis, Uncharted 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, or whatever game you will. Every 3D game related to Duke or 3DR was developed by other people - Max Payne, Prey, Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, and so on. In the end, over 14 years after the first appearance of 3D gaming, 3DR still hasn't finished a single 3D game. The closest thing to it was Duke Nukem 3D which simulated 3D with sprites, but that's not good enough.

Anyone thinks that may have been one of the reasons behind the failure to deliver DNF? It was their first 3D experience, which is why they might have thought that engine-changing would be much smoother than it was.

Yeah, I know...Carmack beat out Broussard to that real 3D experience, but perhaps Broussard was building up this long to make us believe that even tho your Carmacks, Newells, and CliffyBs of the world can prove that absolute 3D was possible during that time, 3DR was just warming up.

George became obsessed with creating the first 4-dimensional game. Duke fighting in hypercubes!

He's just waiting for the technology to catch up.

You failed to mention that they haven't made a true 3D game and that they're name is 3D Realms

That occurred to me after I posted. Kinda ironic.

3D Realms - Reality is our game

Really?

It's like if Epic games only made casual games
If Crytek made a game without a cry
If SCE made Xbox exclusive games

One of the other threads summed everything up:

Management problems - I think a lot of people can appreciate George wanting to have as many features (or even the best) in the game, but there is just no way to get this done when you have the following:

No in-house engine - You are usually playing catch up and relying on older tech, fixed in features in some points, which require a lot of hard work implement new features you thought of. While you can certainly churn out an epic game with someone else's engine, if you plan to do that you also need a lot of people. Unfortunately, they had a:

Smaller development team - can't do all of the work you want to do, let alone surpass what is in the engine you are working on.

Also, I think the turnover hurt them just as much as the rest, which i would guess had an impact from the salary/royalty/experience people involved would receive.

In the end, I think a perfect game was wanted, but it's impossible to please everyone.

It's a sad story, more for the former employees than Scott and George (no offense), although I'm sure it's got to be hard to not be able to realize the dream they set out in trying to create DNF. Sadly, for them it was aborted.

Maybe after the lawsuit is over, stem cells will have been reserved from the project and someone will clone it and bring it back to life.

Maybe they should have switched to the prey engine at the first available opprtunity. Even if the portals technology became too complex, they would still have had a fairly technologically advanced in-house engine to build off of.

They could buy Cry Engine 3, and build Duke Nukem off it. The game could be then polished and done for ~years and STILL be one of the best looking games. I mean, there is so much you can squeeze outta Cry3. That would be perfect choice. Or build your own engine.

Oh and.. did anyone notice? DNF also stands for Did not Finish

There aren't any true 3d games out yet, most still use 2d sprites for a lot of special effects. Granted they do this in very sophisticated ways so you can't tell they're not true 3d, but it means that we still only have 2.99d or so

The perfect version WAS the 2001 DNF. The trailer alone gave off a real Duke nukem 3D sequel feel. The graphics were sweet, the action looked epic and the one liners and attitude was perfect. I'll keep saying it over and over, the 2001 version was and will always be the real sequel to Duke nukem 3D.

George pretty much sealed thier fate when he decided to scrap it.
