Q: What about Windows XP Professional x64 Edition?

A: SP3 does not apply to the x64 version of Windows XP. Instead, that operating system is updated via service packs aimed at Windows Server 2003. The latest Windows 2003 service pack is SP2.
So the fixes brought to WinXP through SP3 aren't available for the x64 version? And why on earth do I need to install service packs for Server 2003 while I'm simply not using that product?

Then again I already realized (too late) than have XP 64 means you're screwed big time.

I am glad this was released now. I plan on starting my Windows over since stuff has been getting sketchy (ie I my desktop image keeps vanishing and stuff.) I need a clean slate, so that is the plan for later this week/next week. It is timely for SP3 to come out since all I really will have to do is install that.

Doesn't seem like there's anything worthwhile upgrading for this patch. Probably stick with SP2 for now.

Product Key-less install option.

As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.
Is that going to be just not needing the key, or does that also mean no activation needed?

I installed it on my secondary machine here at 3DR, and on my laptop at home.

I'm going to be going to XP (from Vista) for my main work machine at 3DR when my replacement install disc comes from Dell early next week. I was going to reformat and reinstall, and decided to go back to XP for my primary work machine.

Wtf? MS has never done this before.

Either way, I installed it on one computer at work and there weren't any problems. Didn't notice any changes, either, but they didn't really have to make any.

When I am finished downloading these install files for Open Office and ITunes, I am going to restart the computer and see how much a difference this full update patch makes.
I just nuked my Windows partition and did a fresh install of SP2. I had made a backup of the SP3 file (a huge file) and just ran the exe off the DVD I made as backup. It ran smoothly and made no complaints. Just needs a restart and I can't stop my downloads to do that.

I see this as a great benefit for me and others who nuke the drive and don't update to Vista or something. Have an all in one update to current.

Yeah, it's weird. Anyway, I'll just slipstream an SP2 image with SP3 and be happy.

I did this SP3 update right after formatting and reinstalling XP SP2. This is what my Windows Update was showing afterwards (attached)
Seriously, only IE7 and a couple of other things. That is so cool. Really saved me time. Only one restart (as opposed to like 3 with the 3 + rounds of Windows Updates).
It occurred to me that I haven't installed Office 03 yet, but those updates are not nearly as painful to install as Windows Update.

Just download directly from Microsoft and install it. Your PC may be from DELL... but WinXP is Microsoft, no matter what.

Go ahead and update, won't hurt anything.

I've done some digging and the big problem (constant rebooting) seems to primarily affect AMD cpu computers and certain HP setups.

Still, I think it's completely unacceptable that you can't even boot in Safe Mode if you get these problems.

If people are having troubles with boot times, I think that Microsoft's BootVis will fix that. Basically optimizes boot times after a few restarts.

IE6 holds web standards back when people roll back to it from IE7. It's very frustrating to have to throw your hands up and forfeit on a design because IE6 is the majority browser and the only browser that won't display it properly.

I had similar problems (Thanx, Wamp!) and had to skip the install and go back to a previous restore point. After the install everything looked OK until I tried playing a game. I then got error messages about my gfx card not being installed, and when I looked in the device manager, the AGP driver for the main board wasn't installed. I installed the driver and then ended up in an endless boot-crash-loop. Tried disabling the intelppm.sys driver as said in that post, but no difference. Seems to be another problem, but I canšt be bothered at the moment.

Another thing - after installing SP3 I suddenly found a new icon om my desktop saying "Play Portal now!". Did this come from SP3, or from the NVIDIA-drivers?? It surely wasn't there before, and it would be kind of ... well, odd ... if MS would include a commercial icon for a game in a service pack ...
