How about an illustrated book like Valve's Raising the Bar? It could detail the history of DNF's development. If it was an honest assessment of everything that happened, I'd buy it.

It would need to fit certain production criterias too, so it would need more effort than just releasing something on the internet(for the buyers?). It's more unlikely than just plain videos/commentary, or so I see it.

I would gladly pay extra money for a "making of DNF" DVD.

it's a great idea!
I really liked the movies in the Orange Box. Also i'm always willing to pay something extra for stuff that really 'finishes' the product (not that it's not finished without it, but you know), like the directors edition of some games (IL2 Sturmovic, MoH Pacific Assault). I think it really adds up to the level of realism in the game. Some details you would normally overlook come out better for instance.

But then again, i doubt there will be a 'making of DNF'. 3DR has stated before that most of the stuff from the past is long gone. I also remember to have read a topic like this some years ago on this forum, in wich some 3DR members (i believe it was you Joe) said there would be nothing shipped from the past of DNF. To much has changed, there's no comparison, that sort of things.

However, a 'behind the screens' look with technical commentary on the actual game and engine is something different than a 'making of'. So maybe we're lucky and we get that!

Lightbulb Developer commentary mode
In the Chronicles of Riddick game, there is an unlockable "commentary" mode, which annotates the entire game with extensive, often fascinating DVD-style audio commentary from the frightfully talented development team at Stockholm-based Starbreeze Studios.

That commentary mode is a great treat, and its implementation is surprisingly clever. Commentary tracks appear as actual floating objects in the game (complete with descriptions of who's speaking, what about, and for how long), and they show up in specific contexts and seemingly around every corner. So the experience of playing the commentary mode is comparable to what it might be like to play this game with the developers sitting next to you with nothing better to do than indulge your curiosity about any little detail that catches your eye. It yields great insight into how such a one-of-a-kind game came into being, and you get to listen to as much or as little of it as you wish while playing through the adventure once again. This level of behind-the-scenes detail would seem pretentious or pointless in a lesser game; here, it's a revelation and a great reason to justify playing the game again.

Here's how it looks -

Now, talking about DNF, I'm sure the 3DR team has a lot to share as well, with the game being in development hell for a decade. So having such a commentary mode in Duke Nukem Forever unlocked after beating the game seems to make a lot of sense and would be a great treat for the fans.

What do you guys think?

I hope they do it. valve has implemented it in their games and I think it adds a lot of value. of course I suspect the feature set for the game is fixed, so if this is a suggestion nothing will come of it, but hopefully they have implemented something like that. lots of people especially would love to have a making of dvd....

Tbh, I think this is better than a "making off dvd", since it will be part of the actual game. They could also release it as a patch later on, or just make it a part of some special collector's edition.

I'd really like this... for a lot of games it didn't really made sense to me, but this is DNF... the game with the largest development cycle ever... it would be very interesting to hear from the devs about particular points in the game and see what went into making it all.

I'd like both, the making of's are also interesting, but that could ship later on web. Maybe in episodic form, so that there are sections that talk about the engine, art assets/concept art and the design process.

I'm sorry to the people who say no if it takes even longer to implement this into the game but in all honesty, I can't seem to see any other outcome but win if they were to put a dev. commentary into the game like the valve games.

Yes definatly, Like a nuclear sign in the corner that comes up and is optional if people want to play it. As for it taking longer if people are really that worried about it, maybe make it an optional downloadable plugin?

Id like to see a full documentry about the games development(not a CliffyB style one which has very little to do with the game) but id like to see them discuess the details of the game like the textures they used, why they decided on the look they are using, some differnt ideas of the way the pig cop could have looked. I know ive said it before but i really want to see the old footage and some explanations as to why it was canned.

Im sure it will come. Im just curious about this little peice of gaming history.

I think we are due for a new trailer/picture/gameplay video...arnt we?

---------- Post added at 01:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:39 PM ----------

Maybe the reason Duke Nukem Forever has taken so long is because we keep wanting new things in the forums???

But yeah, developer commentary at this point is just going to delay the game even more. I don't think they are really doing any kind of "Inside Duke's Forever Dev History", they had enough with re-doing all the stuff from scratch 2 or 3 times already (More to come? )
