DOOM 4? a possible storyline let down?
Ok to start off i LOVE DOOM, and its episodes and doom 2, doom 3 was great. But what about the 4th, hell that's not its pending title for released yet. By the by its claimed not to be a remake of doom 2, a sequel from doom 3, or even a reboot. So WTF? ID software has done great games,and this one supposed to be on earth, I'm sure most of you can agree we want it to have a story and feel of doom 2. But if its not that above what they listed, what the hell will it be like? Can they really pull something off to where its not remotely like doom 2 and yet even have the balls to call it a doom game? Your thoughts?

this should be moved to the doom 4 thread, the scenes in doom 3 weren't bad at all... cliche and predictable... but decent...

Whenever I think of what the story to Doom 4 will be, I get completely broken. Like I literally just fall apart and my brain stops working because I can't think of a single thing it might be.

I mean, its not a continuation of any of the other Doom games and its also not a remake. So is it just a random "OH SHIT DEMONS ARE TAKING OVER EARTH!!!" scenario, or something else?

I mean I haven't the slightest clue what it could be, at all. Only that there will be hellish monsters. I just hope it doesn't turn into the story of Gears of War where the demons are taking over Earth from inside of it. Crawling out of the ground and slaying everyone.

Same. I want Doom to be Doom. The only narrative that matters is that many demons showed up in big, pretty environments for me to kill with various degrees of gore.

Yeah, I like to go back to the old run-and-gun style of gameplay that the classic Doom series was known for. I sort of felt that Doom 3 was too storyline-driven, and almost felt that it was, well...too realistic, too many surprises popping up in front of you, hardly made it feel like the Doom I remembered. Maybe too linear, that's probably more accurate.

Heh...fat chance of that. However, I really didn't complain about Doom 3 overall, just didn't know what I was in for originally when I was anticipating it. I knew that id wanted to take a new direction with the franchise, just didn't think that id was gonna take that Half-Life style approach.

Having an only action action action game without any narrative at all would actually make a bad game, atleast for me. I love playing Serious Sam and Painkiller, but because its nothing but action and almost no storyline is made through the game except for skippable cutscenes, I get fatigued by it really quickly, and it becomes boring rather quickly.

At id Software since August 2010. He previously worked at Valve for almost 4 years (as Software Engineer) on Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat and Half-Life: Source. Then at Mobliss (Slyder, as Game Developer), BottleRocket Entertainment (Xiaolin Showdown, as Programmer), Secret Level Inc. (Golden Axe: Beast Rider, as Senior Programmer) and finally at 2K Marin as AI / Gameplay Programmer on BioShock 2 and XCOM.

He's taking care of AI in DOOM.

Just stopped by to share this little find. A well-known logo for the new DOOM, this time in a better quality. Scavenged from Ari Patrick's site (Associate Producer for DOOM). I say this everytime but I think this logo is amazing. A shift from cybernetic design to gritty, raw, organic look sets a nicely disturbing tone. I hope the final version won't be too different.

While the cybernetic design means a lot to me (it has something special to it), the new (temporal?) design is fantastic, if not perfect. The fact that it uses the same font is representative enough.

It doesn't really scream "organic" to me. More like concrete and charred asphalt or something.

I don't think anyone will be terribly surprised if id ends up going with the "Hell on Earth" direction from Doom II on this one.

I didn't mean organic in a flesh and bone sense, should have probably written it differently.

I personally bet on Hell on Earth scenario. If it's not for what their former motion capture actor Brad Hawking said, this logo definitely indicates Earth as a setting, indeed.

I have to admit that the new logo looks pretty awesome but i hope the final design is a mixture of both the orginal cybernetic and the new organic. Call me nostalgic.

It’s not that bad.

The only area where they went really OTT with the darkness was the escort mission.

Think I’ll give the flashlight mod ago though. I just hope it doesn’t kill the atmosphere - which is the main reason I keep coming back.

Nah, you don't need the flashlight mod. Just use your muzzle flashes.

I never have problems seeing anything on default.

Do the muzzle flashes really light stuff up in Doom 3? I played it on Ultra last november and couldn't get it to happen. Maybe the "light" it generates is extremely short in range? I doubt you're meant to light stuff you're aiming at a couple of feet away like it was a flashlight or something.

I don't know. I think it lights it a bit, but that was more than enough. It's only that escort mission that sucks and it's not hard to bash those imps with your own flashlight.

I recall the plasma rifle lighting the place up nicely. I think that’s actually the weapon with the best sound effect too.

Which isn't saying much, all the other weapons sound like popguns. Chaingun sounds alright actually.

I never felt the game was to dark, or so dark you couldn't see anything. Yes, it was dark... and that worked for the atmosphere they were going for.
My problems with Doom 3 come from the over reliance of Imps, and to much filler in the middle of the game.

And only one level in Hell.

But thats one thing that people forget... That the setting is in a neglected research facility. Sure some parts should be lighter but its Doom, A FPS horror game, and whats the point of a horror game where all the lights are turned on?
