I've read that line too many times before.

Besides, the first Gamasutra screenshot was posted in January 2007, it's now close to October 2008 - which now is now?

Never said anything about a masterplan, but I don't buy the supposedly off-the-cuff media release explanations (the ones that Waiter cited).

Besides, to me your point about DNF footage slipping out of 3DR HQ because of their excitement for the game doesn't gel with the compromised image quality of those releases - wouldn't any proud parent present his/her baby in the best light possible?

Bottomline, I would prefer it if DNF was kept under wraps until 3DR were positive they could deliver a finished product within, say, a six to nine month period and then do a proper unveiling and sustained exposure until release.
The way they're going about it now (and have been since the Gamasutra pics) just reeks of self-importance to me.

Those were just thumbnails of game rendered character models then. We since got a teaser that showed some of those characters animated and later, footage that has them in actual (unpolished) gameplay. I'd say things have been coming together.

Ah but when I made my point, I clearly mentioned it was apart from what Joe had said (what I had mentioned elsewhere) and what George has now stated. This is a reward for those XBLA players who finished DN3D. That's all.

I was referring to the larger pattern going back to Jan '07. And from what I'm given to understand, those who've earned these screenshots don't see any compromises in image quality.

I don't know what's there to argue and complauin about? What I don't get is how 3D Realms knowing the consequences of releasing this should count against this being released just as a nice reward for the XBLA fans ?

I mean it is the difference between:

1. "Hey lets release two screenshots of DNF with the XBLA version of Duke3D, that won't have any impact on the internet"(Releasing in ignorance).

2. "Lets come up with a genius marketing ploy for DNF. Lets release two screenshots of DNF with the XBLA version of Duke3D, just to piss of the fans that have waited this long. Muhahahha." (Marketing ploy).

3. "We need a some nice reward to those playing Duke Nukem 3D XBLA. AHH, I have got it lets release two screenshots of DNF with it. That would also have some added benefits for DNF" (The nice surprise for XBLA players, whilst realizing the internet reaction).

I still haven't seen any arguments against 3. Also calling those who disagree with you naive isn't really an argument.

Just to clear a few things up:

I was just having a laugh and had no intention to kick 3DR or anyone else in the groin.

All I was trying to say was that release of info or media from 3DR is obviously not done without any thoughts about the hype/marketing impact. Not by them and not by any other company. I don't believe there is any "master plan" like X-Vector, but even if you make things up as you go, the media wouldn't have been released without fitting today's "stage" of the DNF hype. For years there has been a tight lid on everything about the game. Today the lid is lifted, but only just so much that a few crumbles are allowed to leak out to indicate the cookies in the jar. Putting these images in the game may well have been thought of as a treat to the fans (and a great one), but they still wouldn't have been in there in the end of the day if the hype hadn't been wanted. We know it, you know it. This is not the same as to say that the screens are only in there for the hype. I just don't understand the point of playing it down to the hype being unintentional. That's all.

I dig the Octobrain design and the eyes look great, in my opinion.

I also have to say that I like it that Octobrain, just like Assault Trooper from the teaser is almost completely the same as in Duke3D. Sure, it's updated and all but it's still the same monster, even most of the details are carried over from Duke3D. Cool.

From the look of things, those who've unlocked the achievement on the 360 can zoom into the screenshots. Since everyone's wondering about the stripper facing the other way, could someone just zoom in on her head and take a picture or something?

I have a Question...
We see Duke's Face from the outside of the players controls... Is it possible for players to control the camera outside the players view (for screenshots purposes i suppose, not unlike Max Payne's spin cam in pause mode, although that game was seen from outise the eyes of Max to begin with, my point is if it's possible to get alternate views like that though)

It might also be a simple, leave-the-body-of-the-player Command line option, or perhaps a Cutscene or a specially posed image for the purpose of taking pretty pics, using actual in game graphics...

We all love Duke's face, i am eager to know if you'll see him in more ways other than through Multiplay and in a mirror...

Well it is a form of unreal engine, and in any of those unreal engine games, you're able to record a demo and then basically spectate yourself as you play.

Yes, i recall that feature being available in UE based engines, that is also why i suggested it myself

I still question if that feature was used though, because of Duke's expression, which looks more like he's actually looking behind him at the girls, ratehr than a default player expression (-which i believe, would be more like looking straight in the direction the player was looking)

But then again, they might actually have made the face of the Duke model itself (outside the players, and not interrupting what you really look at of course)
