Doom 3's story started off pretty good then jumped off the deep end with all that Martian bullshit.

Doom 3's gameplay was decent. There was some WTF design decisions like having way too many weapons, disappearing monsters and monster closets. The last boss was utterly deflating. The jaunts through Hell were a lot of fun though.

I don't get this complaint honestly. Back then it would make PCs crawl if you used the non disappearing bodies mod. It was there for a reason.

Also Doom and monster closets is synonymous. You go somewhere, more monsters pop outta the wall.

I always loved the Martian stuff in DOOM 3.

As for gameplay, I didn't like how you could carry so much ammo. Ok, games aren't realistic on there, but DOOM 3 was just too much with something like 320 shells...

I disslike too when you can carry too much ammo or stuff in general. Less ammo makes use of more weapons. FEAR was a bit nice but it was weird to never find magazines in the game, only new full loaded guns.

Yeah, I actually messed around configs one day and you know, I changed max ammo for all weapons, you could basically have your gun fully loaded and 3 additional clips if I remember correctly and also decreased ammo pickups. That was one hell of a difference, really.

Ok, back to the interview. Here's a slightly better version of a transcripion:

Geoff Keighley: Second project, you're working on DOOM 4 internally, right?

Todd Hollenshead: Right. We're just calling it DOOM. Sort of "4" is to [???] it's not the original DOOM...

GK: You may not call it "4"?

TH: May not call it "4".

GK: But is it gonna be, you know sort of the same stories that we've seen in a previous DOOM games or is it a new story?

TH: Well, I think the contruct is the same, so it's demons from Hell, and you're a guy, hell breaks loose and you've gotta survive, kill the demons.

GK: DOOM is you know, it's known for sort of a zig-zag you know corridor shooter which you know is great 10, 15 years ago but now people, you know they want the open world, they want the vehicles, they want [???] more so how do you stay true with DOOM but still deliver the kind of gameplay people want to that?

TH: We think about you know, sort of tight first-person action experience, we know that we can do that and you know, we're gonna have some of that in Rage but it's gonna be so much more of a focus with DOOM as well...

GK: Will there be vehicles in DOOM?

TH: I don't wanna go into details...

GK: See, I bet there's gonna be a tank or something like that.

TH: DOOM is DOOM and it really is I mean, to me it's sort of a grandfather of all the FPS games and all the shooter games and making it into something that's not a shooter would be just a travesty and a crime against humanity.

I have no idea what are they saying in the red parts.

Also it seems that it's more and more likely that the next DOOM won't have "4". It would be both cool and confusing if they just called it DOOM.

It will be pretty sweet if there are a couple of big epic battles like that in Doom 4. Of course, this is Doom, majority of fighting should be fought alone.

I hope Doom 4 is gritty, destroyed, dark and unsettling.... but not pretty.

Actually hasn't Carmack said all versions of Doom 4 would be capped at 30? Similar to how RAGE is capped at 60.
I mean yeah, modders will be able to remove the restriction (as they did for Doom 3's 60fps limit), but IIRC the 30fps cap is on all platforms.

Hope that helps.

I actually fail to understand that logic. I know it's exaggerated but why would anyone want a carbon copy of something 15 years old? At least few people mentioned exactly this. Even though it's gonna be a traditional run&gun shooter, I want it to be a 2010, 2011 run&gun shooter with the quality of both action gameplay and artistic direction taking advantage of the technology it's built on, fourth DOOM game, not the second or something.

That was a pretty cool vid man. I agree that there should be some of that style in D4 where you're just fighting alongside other marines, and all hell is just breaking loose around you. It's exciting just to imagine what it could be like.

I agree with you, I want the "feel" of DOOM 2 back. Doom 3 didn't give me very strong "DOOM" vibe at all. I wan't it to have action, really good tradional shooter with twist. Modern run&gun shooter sounds really good, we haven't seen much of those - only Painkiller. Also, the visuals have to be top notch, somehow I just need that extra something on that department too.

- A lot of monsters
- Possibility to play with a friend as coop, anyone who has played the originals with a friend now how fun it is

id Software has promised a lot already - it won't be like Doom 3, which is a good place to start. Doom 3 wasn't bad game, it was just mediocre, I doubt mediocre is the word they wan't to be used of DOOM4.

Not entirley. It was run-n-gun mixed with survival-horror. For a run-n-gun the pace was really slow. They tried to create tension that way. I never fought more than 2 or 3 monsters at a time. I'd prefer the straight up fast paced classic DOOM experice for DOOM 4, which John Carmack says we're getting.

If you mean survival-horror as in horror movie with action, then fine. If you mean survival-horror as in Resident Evil, then it's not. Doom 1 and 2 are survival horror then too. You have to survive, and not all the maps are fast paced. Since they are non linear, if you get lost or go the wrong way then you'll be in tons of down time.

Survival horror is where you get low amounts of ammunition, health, and healing objects. You also either decide to fight this enemy and use up your ammo or run past them and save it up for something else. What zuljinraynor says, you have to survive them as well.

DOOM 1 & DOOM 2 are not survival horror, they are action sci/fi horror.

Well yes, it is and nobody claimed otherwise, but there is a certain difference in Doom & Doom 2 in comparison to Doom 3. The whole concept was turned upside down, only demons and basic premise it the same. Gameplay was similar, run and gun, but beyond that they differ vastly, and mostly not for better. Why would id Software change what they did in Doom 3 if it was so good?

Doom 3 featured scare -elements that the other two games didn't have, not at least so overused that you KNOW that monster will spawn behind you. Very few monster at a time, very dark, not much of variation in level design - which Doom and Doom 2 had quite a lot considering their age.
