That's a nice fantasy, but in the real world things don't happen that way.
I also like to think that 3DR have more positive matters on their agenda than deceiving the press and their potential customers.

NB: to clarify, this post is in reply to Dennis.

The guy that wrote the article says that George was typing with Duke 3d's fingers. This shows one that the article writer doesn't understand Duke's world very much or doesn't care. Duke's last name isn't 3d.

If we can use email in the game, then it might be true that we can surf the web in game too. So instead of having to close down DNF.exe to check 3drealms.com's forums, we can post in here from in the game. Also, what stops everyone from emailing joe from in game. He might wake up to 50,000 emails from fans saying hey joe thanks for the game blah blah blah all from dukenukem@3drealms.com

Don't worry. When I say tech complete, I mean we could ship if all the content were done. It's fairly easy to add and update shaders and we do so all the time. The graphics guys area ahead and always have time to add in bells and whistles. Many things like per pixel blur, depth of field etc, have zero impact on game content and drop in, in a few days.

It's not a big deal. It was mainly to support Prey and help secure another nice feature article and cover, so we agreed to show DNF as part of that. It had no deeper intent than that.

I guess what he meant is "Duke typing with his three dimensional fingers"
But I can't speak for the man.

Tom,

About the article, well I think DNF really might be an elephant in the room, still I think 3DR should think the concept of making this kind of moves. It doesn't change anything, and personally it frustrated me to read. "Duke and Duke but still no Duke - can't talk sorry" . Do I have to read in print that they can't talk about Duke? I think I hear enough of it on the forum. They should really consider a Duke periodical update after releasing Prey. Just little bits like ok, like "this week we had an interesting meeting, and things went forward - We're tech ready".

Or instead they could just sit in the cave and come out when they actually have something to tell us. (Sorry if it sounds like a polite version of STFU and finish the damn thing - I mean no harm)

3DR - Either way is ok, but guys make up your mind.
And don't get me wrong - I still love you and believe in you

And finally my question for Tom: (A bit around): Did you wrote the article in a way so the game seems far from being finished on purpouse?

Amen.

Sort of going along with what George said, I'm under the impression that this generation of engines doesn't go out of date as quickly as past engines. I'm sure there are still leaps to be made that will require from-the-ground-up next gen engines, but the geometry doesn't change much and much of the new graphical stuff comes from shaders and the like, and from the ability to have higher res textures.

As I said before, it's cool news, but not in that context. It could pop up somewhere, without the sad part.

I hope that wasn't all you came away with, Asmodeusz. The point I was trying to make is that the game is very much in development, much like any other game, but with the exception that 3DR isn't doing it with the press exposure that goes along with many developing games. For various reasons, and for better or worse -- and I'm sure much to the chagrin of their publishing partners! -- 3DR is working quietly and without ceremony. The point of the sidebar is that they are indeed *working*, and they do have a lot to show for that work, but it's not for public consumption yet.

As for a release date, lord knows if 3DR won't speculate about it, I can't imagine I have anything to add to the discussion!

Finally, guys, do me the favor of at least *pretending* you're not passing around scans of the copyrighted material I work on for a living. It's incredibly discouraging to show up here to talk about this stuff only to have folks still jumping in asking for scans. For Pete's sake, buy the magazine if you want to read the article!

Exactly. Everybody wants to freeload. I bought the magazine, and I'm glad I did. People just don't read all the posts, so I'm going to put it in bold here in the hopes that somebody will read it.

DON'T ASK FOR MAGAZINE SCANS. PEOPLE WORK TO MAKE THAT MAGAZINE. JUST SHELL OUT THE DOUGH, YOU CHEAP BASTARDS.

I often have this same frustration in other forums I frequent as well. My fiancee works at a magazine, and I'm sure she wouldn't appreciate it.

Now, back on topic: I think this is some great info. We already are playing games; it's about time the games played back, and it looks like DNF will be that game judging by the content in the article.

Yeah, those things are in and have been for a while. And yes, we've been fundamentally tech complete for longer than a year. But this is a case where you just say things without thinking and then people pick the details apart in print later.

Well, please do not overuse motion blur, its a nice effect but when it gets used for any faster movement on the screen like in Perfect Dark Zero it gets annoying
But its great for reloading animations

not that i wanted to argue, but just to mention that a lot of people here on these boards live in locations where they dont have that magazine in stores... I cant bet my life though, but im pretty confident that i wount find Computer Games Magazine here in Estonia for example...
So i think the scans requests come mostly from people who cant buy that magazine anyway...

Yes, that's true... Unfortunately, many (and i mean MANY) stores doesn't have such magazines available... For instance, i only know ONE store that sells PCGamer... And that's in a completely different city in my country...

Normally i buy magazines though, and i have done that ll the times i had the chance...

Unlike the print version, the magic of Zinio doesn't extend to time-travelling apparently. They don't have the May issue on there, only single copies from March & April. There's a bookstore at my location that sells overpriced imported mags, I'll check to see if they have it. I'd like a physical copy to show Prey's sphinc-door screenie to certain people.

So TC, how did you feel about the game, from a gamer's perspective accounting for its unpolished state. What kind of potential did it have and how would you rate it lookwise vis-a-vis the up and comers of the next-gen crop? I don't think you're giving anything away by answering this.

Well I didnt even read the Prey article. I only wanted to see the side-bar on Duke. 30 seconds of reading. If I had seen the magazine in the store, I would have just read the Duke sidebar and not bought the magazine. If I wanted to read the Prey article or anything else, it would be a different story.

That's a great question, Kalki. I'm accustomed to trying to be dispassionate about previews and letting the developers' words speak for them.

Like most of you guys, I'm really excited for 3DR to get another game out, but after seeing what they're doing, I'm even more excited. It's partly that they were showing some impressive stuff, but I think it's mainly how true they're being to the Duke Nukem I remember. It was really encouraging to see how clearly they're still able to express the stuff that made Duke great. Because in the end, being next-gen doesn't mean beans to me if you're not able to do anything memorable with it.

I don't anticipate this is going to be a shortcoming of DNF.
