The five FPS biggies
I think that the most innovative, legendary First-Person Shooters are:

#5
Wolfenstein 3D

This was the game that started the FPS revolution. It wasn't the first, but it was the first good one. Need I say more?

#4
Quake

Quake basically laid the grounds for all the 3D engines of the future. It also had a sense of style and atmosphere that has yet to be matched.

#3
Duke Nukem 3D

While Quake broke grounds for technology, Duke Nukem 3D broke grounds for attitude and gameplay. This was the first game to truly have a soul.

#2
Rise of the Triad

Rise of the Triad is the most innovative FPS of all time, and, quite possibly, the most innovative game of all time, period. While Doom focused on simple gameplay, Rise of the Triad aimed for stunning new features and add-ons that have designed the guidelines for future games. The gameplay in Rise of the Triad was outstanding. A final note: Rise of the Triad virtually defined multi-player DeathMatches.

#1
Doom

Doom is the all-time classic. It is not the most innovative FPS, but it is certainly the most legendary. The impact that this game had on the gaming universe is undeniable. Doom was the first hard-core game, and it still amazes us to this day. It has never lost its cutting edge and legendary feel.

I would have added the EGA scroller id did through Softdisk. Naturally, I'm drawing a blank on the title of the thing.

Re: The five FPS biggies
Was it The Catacomb or Catacomb 3D: The Descent? Though The Catacomb was a top-down view and Catacomb 3D was a first-person view of the same game.

CK, you forgot Half Life. Totally changed the way we think of FPS today. Plus the fact millions of gamers and 40+ emgs have said its the best game of the year, maybe even decade, so, like, it should be there.

What? No, no, no. Insofar as impact and success and everything goes the list looks much more like this, and I'm sure it'd be agreed upon by many with slight variation.

5. Wolfentstein 3D/Catacombs 3D (Early id FPS games, period)
4. Half-Life
3. Duke Nukem 3D
2. Quake
1. DooM

I really don't think ROTT influenced FPS of today. Sure it's a great game, but over half of your Q3:A fans have never heard of it.

Help! When I was in Witchaven last week to participate in the Rise of the Triad, there were some strange monk who said he was a Heretic, and he said my Doom was near! Shortly thereafter, an Unreal earthQuake struck me!

Re: The five FPS biggies
if you're talking about the most influental games, then its wolf3d, DOOM, Duke3d, and Quake, but if you say the best FPS games, then in my money it's ROTT, Wolf3d, DOOM, Duke, and HalfLife, and Quake too.

Re: The five FPS biggies
I would have to say that ROTT was not one of the games to influance the genere too much, but it was one of the most innovative games. For example, it has jump pads, which (too my knowledge) have only appeared in Unreal Tournament and Quake3.

Re: The five FPS biggies
the game has much more than jump pads, check the "ROTT is 5" thread for a lot more about the game and what he was first in

Re: The five FPS biggies
Well, I would hafta say that my top 5 FPS's are...

5. Doom
4. Quake
3. Duke3D
2. Half-Life
1. ROTT

Of course, these picks are mostly subjective, so don't assume that these or any other top lists are the end-all to the best games.

PS to Commander: Why don't you try to come up with an original post next time? It seems that you read my "ROTT didn't make it" post, saw that I did a top 5 list, stole the idea & just modified it a bit. So now, instead of the top 5 all time best games, you did the top 5 all time best FPS games. Hmmm...anyone else see a similarity here??

Go read ROTT in Hell - there's a huge listing of features that were in ROTT first before any other 3D action game.
