Major Stryker full version installation problem
I tried to run the install.exe file. It worked, but I get this message:

quote:
There's not enough room on that drive to install the program.
SPACE REQUIRED: 5364973
SPACE AVAILABLE: -2147155968

I have 2.15 gigs of free space on my hard drive, so I don't know why it was telling me that. I thought maybe my computer was too powerful, so I tried Moslo. Same result.

I then took the disks to the much less powerful computer downstairs (a 486). This is what I got:

quote:
There's not enough room on that drive to install the program.
SPACE REQUIRED: 5364973
SPACE AVAILABLE: -356483954

I have 350 MB of space available on that computer, so I don't know why it told me that. Like before, I tried using Moslo. Same result.

Can anyone help me? I know Apogee doesn't provide support for this, but maybe Joe would be willing to help on a non-professional basis?

This is a common program with Apogee game installations. The installation only accepts harddisks up to a certain size, after that it conks out.

Dunno how to fix it. Joe probably does.

That's not our install. That's an old FormGen install program. There's no way to get that install working, it thinks you have negative hard drive space available.

The only way to get it 'installed' is to manually copy the files to your HD. If you do this with Windows explorer MAKE SURE THE FILES ARE NOT READ-ONLY AFTER YOU COPY THEM - it will cause problems when you try and play the games.

Okay, I did that.

The game starts, but when the options menu pops up, the cursor is constantly scrolling upward. I managed to hit <enter> when the cursor landed on "New Game", but when the game started, the animated gif of the ship entering warp space froze and so did the computer (I had to hit the reset button).

Maybe I'm not doing something right? I tried this several times (yes, several) and all with the same results.

That's a joystick problem. This was one of the reasons the game was deleted from the product line.

The game thinks you're consistantly holding your joystick "up". Not much that can be done about it, except unplugging the thing.

We used to tell people to alter the speed settings on a speed adaptive game controller, but I don't think that applies anymore.

I don't have a joystick in my computer. Maybe I should plug it in, then pull it out...?

Also, there is still the issue of it freezing when the pre-game movie comes on. I tried it on both computers, same thing.

I'm not gonna give up, yet...

Okay, I finally fixed the joystick problem, now with the freezing problem...

What do you mean by that? How could I change that?

Re: Major Stryker full version installation problem
Conventional memory is the area of memory between 0 and 640 KB.

The easiest ways to get more conventional memory are not loading any TSRs you don't need, or using HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE to load TSRs etc. in high memory (the 640KB - 1 MB area).

Your best bet is to create a boot disk with only the stuff you need, or editing CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT so you have a boot menu.

Re: Major Stryker full version installation problem
I assume you're running Windows 9x.

Add these lines to the beginning of your CONFIG.SYS file :

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
DOS=HIGH

Place everything else in between and change any DEVICE=some file line to DEVICEHIGH=some file

Add the line DOS=UMB to the end of the CONFIG.SYS file.

Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and place LOADHIGH in front of every TSR that gets loaded, ie LOADHIGH MSCDEX.EXE /D:MYCDROM instead of MSCDEX.EXE /D:MYCDROM

Once again, your mileage may vary.

Re: Major Stryker full version installation problem
Conventional memory is not the problem (my P133 has 618KB free, and the game still locks up).

The game just freezes on some computers. In my experience it freezes on Intel Pentium chips, it's always failed to work properly when I've tried it on Intels. However, it's run fine on all non-Intel chips I've tried it on (such as my Athlon and some Cyrix chips).

There's not much you can do about it.

Re: Major Stryker full version installation problem
Thanks, I think I'll try. I hope it doesn't screw up my computer. Major Stryker works perfectly on my 500 MHz Pentium but it freezes on the 100 MHz 486 downstairs.

I think I'm beginning to see a link. Duke Nukem II, which has the same format as Major Stryker, also freezes on my slower computer but runs fine on the faster one.
