Terminal Velocity
Hello, I see some pages of topic and I have'nt found anything about Terminal Velocity ???
Unbelievable for me, impossible : it was one of my famous video games.
It was great for his time : full liberty action.

But with time, I have a big doubt about his scenario : I read that the game begin with a war due to the revolt of surrounding systems. But I still remember something about the electronics defense which human have lost control.

Is there something right in my memories ???

There's 8 or 9 year old posts in this forum. Make sure you're searching ALL the old posts. There's plenty of TV posts in here - just not lately.

Euh, ya, thanks but in fact, I haven't found !
So, do you know anything about the scenario ?

Is there anybody who think that this game can be made in a new version, with graphism using DirectX 10 ? :P

I doubt TRI has any plans to do more. They already did two sequels (the first sequel even had an addon pack). While they could surprise us, I doubt they'd do another one.

Re: Terminal Velocity
I re-discovered this game not too long ago. Amazingly enough, it's still being sold?! Now that DOSBox works with it, I bought a copy .

Problem is, it seems the whole first-person space genre seems to be dead, with the possible exception of some Star Wars games . I looked around for some modern equivalent of TV, and I just couldn't find any. Ironically, it seems that TV is one of the first - and one of the last - games of its genre to be sold.

Problem with Fury, Hellbender, etc is that they're no longer really being sold. I suppose I could check to see if I could find them on ebay, but they're no longer being sold as new anywhere.

Dunno why the whole genre sold so poorly - it's such a fun genre. I suppose it got overshadowed by shooters. I'd definitely pay for a new game in the genre.

Just update the graphics, support XP/Vista, and oh yeah support all four axis on my joystick, and I'll be happy buying a sequel .

For now, though, I'll be happy playing the original in DOSBox. Perhaps emulation will bring back interest in the game and the genre .

I loved the terrain and tunnels in TV. The terrain is greatly varied and often strategically important in TV. Tunnels add to the mix, making it fun. I don't really find other games where everything is in space that much fun.

The only real problem I had is with the weird tying together of yaw and roll whenever using a joystick with it, which made it difficult to maintain level flying. I guess joysticks at the time were rather limited and had only three axis at most (x, y, throttle). My current joystick is a Logitech Extreme3D, which is great for a lot of games . It's got four axis - X, Y, Throttle, and Twist. It's great for flight sims and Mech Warrior games. I'd love to see some game of this genre take full advantage of it.

I suppose you could also say Microsoft killed the genre - after all, they were pretty much in charge of the last few games in the genre. When they lost interest in the genre, everything disappeared .

Well, I did find a game with some space elements in - the Eternal Silence mod for Half-Life 2. Seems fun, but not the same.

Quote:
It would be such a pity to never see again a game like that.
Yes, it truly would be a pity. It was a great concept. I'd hate to see the entire genre remain dead. AFAIK, there's nothing inherently wrong with the genre preventing it from becoming profitable.

Re: Terminal Velocity
Finally got it in the mail. Still a bit surprised I was able to buy a DOS game! Seems to work fine in DOSBox with the exception of a slight sticky key problem.

Takes me back to the good old days .

The level editor download wants me to register for FilePlanet - no thanks - is it possible to get it somewhere without registering?

I do hope that some day the genre gets resurrected.

Hellbender has to be my favorite, I have even done a sort of speed-run for the first mission on Morbos. =D I even created a video of it. Hellbender is more than definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I just wish I knew how to contact TRI.... I always wanted a source code release, and with my C++ Knowledge, make an OpenGL / Multiplayer Port.

Check my vid out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcoOzCqApq4

One thing I must say I really liked about hellbender's controls, it has support for 4 Axis and 8 Buttons. X, Y, Throttle, Rudder(Twist)

Just kinda sad it's hard to contact TRI About possibly releasing the source, since they don't seem to have an email... If someone could point me to the right place, I'll be happy.

FYI: Microsoft was only the producer of Hellbender, they didn't develop it.

Not to be rough, but, Windows ME sucks, sorry to say. Downgrade to Windows 98, or upgrade to Windows 2000. That's all there is to it. ME is an incoherent, slow, buggy, crash-filled piece of shit. I used it, hated it to death. Windows ME was a total failure. If not more than Vista.

If you ever want to run Hellbender (or even Terminal Velocity or Fury3), use Windows 98, or Windows 2000/XP/Vista with Windows 95 Compat mode. (Surprisingly, Vista Runs it better than ME ever can, in fact, almost flawlessly. Despite it's rep for breaking compat with old programs.)

Yeah, I have sent an email to the Employment Email address, but I haven't gotten a reply for almost a month, I even sent it a second time last week just in case, but still nothing.

Oh, and yeah, hellbender is quite a bit darker, but has a MUCH Better background story, and It's CD Red-Book music and Cinematics are pure gold. The amounts of enemies and the challenge really intensifies on the "Hellbent" Skill, gets VERY Frantic, Especially on the last few planets.

I love the fact it has true portal rendering, particles, and 3D Structures such as buildings, and much more complex tunnels, not to mention the levels are larger and some objectives more complex. (Eg. Escorting Rishi to the jump zone without him getting killed by fighters that direct fire at him.)

And, of course Microsoft has a HUGE Influence on the games, no doubt.

Yeah, I'd recommend dumping ME. It's old and outdated. Upgrade to XP, or get a new computer with Vista. I do not recommend upgrading an older computer to Vista: Too many compatibility issues.

Vista is at least improving. It's already a lot more stable than when it was first released. It looks like it's going to end up being a decent OS once the bugs are worked out.

Looks like the only way to get their attention is to drive/fly to Texas and physically knock on the door .

Perhaps an independent developer can make a similar game? There are some nice game engines such as Torque that can easily create something similar to these games. The great thing about Torque itself is that it handles both outdoor and indoor environments seamlessly, which should make adding tunnels and other indoor structures painless.

I personally own the advanced version of Torque, and it should work better for this type of game, since it includes "Atlas" which allows creating much larger terrains than regular Torque.

I might just try creating a proof of concept game with the copy of TGEA I own. If I can get other people to be involved and help develop it - who knows? Perhaps the community can make something.

Re: Terminal Velocity
Hmm, looks like somebody has already attempted to create a "Flight Game Example" based off of the Torque engine - and it appears mostly finished. Sounds like it just needs somebody to put together levels and artwork for it.

If I can get TGEA to compile, I may just try creating a TV-like game with it .

http://www.garagegames.com/blogs/4553/13111

feldzug: You can buy Terminal Velocity 1.2 for only $15 here at 3D Realms. It works great with DOSBox.

http://www.buy3drealms.com/tervel.html

Sad thing is, it's the only game of its kind still for sale . All of those other games have been discontinued and the genre largely forgotten.

Oh, the genre isn't dead. It's still carried on, although mostly by indie developers.
Case in point: the Star Wraith series.
Even better, Star Wraith 4: Reviction, Star Wraith 3: shadows of Orion, and Riftspace are all FREE. And they are all very good, although a little more 'realistic' then Terminal Velocity. IE:

-Enemies are VERY smart and take just about as much to kill as you do (thankfully, you don't have to kill as many as you do in TV)

-You fight mostly in space

-You can't enter an atmosphere at too steep an angle or you'll burn up

-You have to manage energy

-You can use directional thrusters to strafe

and...

-You have commandable wingmates who are just as smart as the bad guys

That said, I would LOVE to see TV remade, even if just by fans.
If it's ever remade, here's some new things I'd like to see:

-"Glide Mode": uses classic air-combat physics (meaning you can stall!), but makes you harder to detect.

-"Inertial mode": allows you to fly with the inertial dampening system OFF when in space, allowing you to keep moving in your original direction and aim somewhere else. AKA "Starfury mode" for those of us who know Babylon 5.

-MORE GUNS! Perhaps even some ballistic weapons?

-Smarter bosses (fighter bosses actually DOGFIGHT, perhaps?)

-Higher speed without AB's: I always felt your maximum speed was a bit slow without afterburners.

-New difficulty: Terminally INSANE, where enemies come in smaller groups... but are super-smart, capable of dogfighting, and take almost as much damage as you do to kill.

I never understood space games. Yes, Descent and its kin are great, but.. How does it make sense that space ships can take tons of damage and dish out an equal amout, yet current space ships can barely withstand a 2 cm space rock. If anything all ships would be destroyed in 1 shot.

The only way around this is for space ships to use sci-fi "shields."

Same goes for the Mechwarrior games. How can they take 200 missiles and still not explode? A real machine would be destroyed by the first missile.
