When I did this originally almost 10 years ago, one went for $125.

I am outbid on this one... maybe...

As a seller I can say that if it was possible in a new listing through an eBay option, I would not allow bidders with 30 or less positive feedback to bid on my auctions. One way I have compensated for this in the past is to require (in the first sentence of my listing) contact from anyone with negative feedback or less than 30 feedback... otherwise they are deleted from the auction and blocked from all my auctions. I have never gotten negative feedback from a buyer willing to communicate... the ones that don't read the auction and comply with my simply screening, are the problem. This does not work with snipers of course... but I have refused sale to snipers who didn't comply... at personal expense of course. I like the closed auction option where buyers can't bid on an item without being on the sellers list... that stops undeserved negative feedback almost completely. A downside to this the loss of many potential bidders who are not wise enough to realize why such drastic measures are necessary to preserve a good name and maintain regular sales.

The person bidding with zero feedback is a "dollar bidder" also which is great for sellers... drives that price up there... dollar bidders are the reason snipers must live in the shadows as we do... until the end of the auction. Then in the final seconds, to the limits of our hardware and connection speed, boldly stating our one and only final, thought out, calculated price... our all... is fired precisely into the auction... then the sweat starts as seconds turn into minutes as the screen refreshes with the news... good, bad, or ugly.
Well ok, sometimes I just click and then see if I won too... much less drama than the above.

Just my three cents...

Good luck on the second mug! This is the last one... better get that best bid in there!

No kidding... it isn't expensive to have coffee mugs made really. I wonder who many would sell if they were less expensive... say $10 to $20?
I suppose their value is more because they are rare than because they are simply of Dopefish.
I make my own Duke Nukem t-shirts for that reason as well... the real ones are not all that common and often expensive... compared to making them yourself. I don't think I will be making any Dopefish t-shirts or Duke coffee mugs though...

You can do that if you put it in your auction rules. I didn't do that, so I'm stuck.

Re: From the archives, look what I found!
I feel safe with anyone over 10 with 100% positive feedback. That is, as safe as one can be on eBay. I once got screwed by a guy who was 75 with 100% positive feedback and two years of selling. He scheduled over a dozen auctions to end at roughly the same time, sent them all damaged or misrepresented goods, and closed his account when he got over 10 negatives a few hours apart. I didn't even get a chance to leave mine. I filed a complaint, and eBay said that I would have to prove that the item was worthless (which it was) by having it appraised, and they would give me 100% of my money back, minus a $42 fee. Since I had only paid $57, and I wasn't likely to get a signed appraisal for free, I just sucked it up and he got away with it. I stopped using eBay for years after that.

Anyway, don't go too hard on the 0s. Remember that we were all 0 at one time, and how mad would you have been if you weren't able to buy anything you wanted just because you were new? While I'm sure that others have, I've sold to a few 0s and never had a problem, but I've been nailed by people well over 50. It sickens me, but even people who have worked for years to establish a reputation can throw it all away to make a quick buck.

If we all suddenly start not allowing less than 10 feedback then new users would never be able to buy.

I too am aware of that... which is why I offer the simple solution of asking the potential bidder with low feedback and negatives contacting me before they bid. If the potential bidder is too lazy to do that then they are the kind of person that no seller wants to deal with anyway.
I am not a hard-ass about it anyway usually... I usually contact a bidder with negatives and or low feedback and ask why they didn't contact me before placing a bid. If they don't respond in a day or so, or if they have a bad attitude about this simple filter, then I block delete them from my auction and block them from other auctions.
Right or wrong, I view my auctions much like the moderators do this forum... you are a guest and bidding is a privilege, not a right. Wise people (or bidders) don’t mind cautious people (or sellers) as they are able to put themselves in another’s shoes understanding the value of an earned status such as feedback.

Privilige? Yeah, not so much I'd say. It would be same if I said that: Usually when I buy stuff, the seller is priviliged to have me as a buyer.

It's cool to see someone from the board got the mug! Congratulations crunchysuperman.
I didn't get a chance to come back and bid on this one. Interesting it went for almost the same amount as the other one. I wonder what other undiscovered items like that might exist in the dark recesses of 3D Realms office?

I view the use of this message board as a privilege... I don't consider 3D Realms lucky that I use the system they provide. That would be very arrogant in my opinion... which is why (to me) it would not be the same if reversed.
The provider of this message board is no more dependent on us the users of the system as an auction seller is dependent on the buyers. Most sellers have no dependency on the auctions... they are luxury or service for most. Few sellers depend on expensive services like eBay for substantial income. Just as 3D Realms has this message board for fun as a service to their fans or customers, I sell for fun as a service to the hobby I enjoy and to assist with my collection. I could have collected everything I have without selling a single auction or being on gaming message boards etc... but it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun.

Think how many users have been blocked or kicked from this message board... just as sellers kick or block buyers from their auctions. Hundreds? I don’t really know, but I would bet it is a lot... this action (constant battle for Joe S and the Moderators), to me, supports the logic that this system is a privilege.

I am not saying it is 100% one sided, anyone knows these relationships are interdependent. I Notice that 3D Realms did very well for themselves before they had a message board, so I don’t feel I have done them a service by being here.
I am very pleased, or grateful, or (can’t think of the word) 3D Realms DOES have this system but they don’t owe it to me. If it were gone tomorrow I would miss it, but not feel as though something were taken from “me”. I would just feel lucky I got to be a part of this system as long as I have. In the same context, I don’t owe anyone the right to bid on my auctions. I view the opportunity for me to bid on some sellers auction as being a privilege.

(This was typed in real time with no editing so if the logic isn’t clear I will expand on it as desired.)

The only ones I have left now are my personal mug, and a test mug that has the dopefish upside down. Those will never be sold, as they're my absolute last versions.

The personal mugs I made and gave to staff working here at the time have people's names on them.

As did mine. It just showed up today, with Joe's business card in it. I didn't want to admit to being the other buyer until I found out if it had survived the trip.

I thought it was appropriate for an archival website like Classic DOS Games to have a unique piece of memorabilia like this. Especially since I basically created the site to preserve Apogee (and MoraffWare) games.

Thank you very much, Joe.
