What is up with new releases of old duke?
I dont understand, why there are new and new releases of duke 3d? does 3drealms really want to suck out the last few bucks, that they can out of us? It should be free of charge.... wtf, its duke3d, i know, its a living legend, but still what is the point? Now its on Xbox, last time it was on mobile?! Why dont you rather work on duk3 4ever, so it will come out sooner?!? Who agrees?

Not me.

The point of releasing Duke 3D on xbox live, is to introduce the game and the character to a new audience who may not have played (or even heard of) Duke Nukem before.

It also gives the Duke pc veterans the chance to play online multiplayer on a dedicated port, without having all the hassle of getting a game going on the pc, so it makes sense for 3d Realms to port the game to the xbox.

Besides, if you don't like the idea of it being brought out on the xbox, take no notice of it, nobodys forcing you to buy it.

Since no one has the game and no one (except 3DR) knows what features are in it, your opinion is completely unfounded. Most of the "great good games" that are coming out have been years in production. In MY opinion, you'll be eating those words

I think they said that the work from the re-release of Duke3D translates directly to DNF

Well, for one, I think they needed to release Duke Nukem 3D to the 360 first, as that gave the team valuable learning experience in regards to what software they need to write and all the little things required to port a game to the 360. 3DRealms mentioned plans to release Duke Nukem Forever on the 360, so getting used to the system first with a smaller, more manageable game, makes a lot more sence then creating this huge epic DUke Nukem game and having no idea what it takes to port and program games to work on the 360 hardware.

Secondly, I think they're releasing Duke3D now on the 360 to give players a few weeks/months just to be introduced to Duke Nukem (or reintroduced for those of us that have all ready played it on the PC) to get everyone rallying behind Duke in preparation for the upcoming release of Duke Nukem Forever. Basically it's just a means of creating a lot of "Hype" to boost sales, or so I would think.

I can only assume you meant to say D3D and not DNF. And even if you did mean D3D, it is a far better game than most games today, I can guarantee that me and everyone else here will say its more than "1% competative".

Secondly, if you WERE referring to DNF, you are wrong again, because it's not even out so how can you compare it?

Thirdly, LOL!

The mobile games weren't ports - they were Duke games for those platforms. The only direct ports of the original Duke Nukem 3D that I can recall are Duke 64 (Nintendo 64, and this version had several additions, too)), Total Meltdown (PS1), and the Sega Saturn version (I think, I'm not sure about that one). And now the 360 LIVE version. Hardly a dominating collection of "ports" there. All the other Duke games were some sort of "original" game for that particular platform.

As for "should be free... wtf". You make a game like that and see if you want to just GIVE it away.

The Saturn version was the one that was a rewrite/recreation using the SlaveDriver engine. Falls somewhere between being a port and being an original game, I suppose... same art and sound assets, et cetera, but all of the maps and everything are different due to SlaveDriver being closer to something like Quake than Build in terms of technology. It reminds me a lot of some old Quake 1 maps that were based on Duke3D map layouts.

I'd definitely call the Saturn version a port, even though it wasn't the most accurate one. The Saturn game still followed the same set of levels from the PC game (as far as I remember), but the levels were also altered to work around the limitations of the Slave Driver engine. Like overlapping sectors from the PC game were reagranged in the Satirn build to work in real 3D space. Also the Saturn game lacked moving sectors and swinging doors and such. It was still a fun game regaurdless... even though it was far from perfect. Though the Saturn game was the first console port of Duke to have online Multiplayer..,. even though practicly nobody owned a netlink add-on... well barely anyone owned a Saturn for that matter .

Video of the Saturn version of Death Row here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qfcG-balfU

Also, kinda off topic... but the Saturn Duke 3D also had a hidden minigame in it called Death Tank Zwei... and I noticed that Death Tank is getting a release on XBLA as it's own game. Kinda funny to see these two games end up together again.

I'd much rather see Duke get ported to wii, it'll be nice to play it with newer style controls or even keep the same with the gamecube controller. Although I wont be getting the xbox version, since i have nothing but trouble with their consoles, i'll be supporting the release of the ds version. I need to actually beat Duke Nukem Advance, its been awhile since i last played it.

also be nice to see the pc version get these extras the 360 are getting...im sure someone will include it sooner or later.

Hey check this out, okay???? I had Duke 3D when I was in middle school my knowledge with comps was slim at the time. It tooke me like an hour to install Duke 3d. I then lost the game. After that I tried it on the N64 Edited NO fun with no strippers. )= so then I tried it on the PS1 it was good but not good controls for me at least anyways. Now Here it is on the 360 with Achievments and also some new features of course. sO I for one am happy bout it. ^^

Wait, what? Doom came out in 1993 and pretty much gave the FPS genre life. Back then no one really cared about the fps genre of gaming since it was pretty much new and when wolfenstien hit the sceen people saw its potential and when Doom came in the fps genre practicalll exploded into popularity.

Doom also gave us what most people crave the most in online games, deathmatches. Without Wolfenstien there wouldnt be a Doom, without Doom there wouldnt be popularity in the FPS genre of gaming and pretty much would of ended right there on the spot. With that, there wouldnt be a Duke.

Thats why a lot of developers and gamers alike (the ones that know the history of video games, not the blind ones who just play) voted that Doom is one the best game ever made. Next Final Fantasy 7 came, then Super mario bros. (nes), then super mario bros 3, the list goes on.

Back on topic, they release old Duke for money. plain and simple Just look at what they did with Final Fantasy 7, they made so many remakes and spinoffs thats its ridiculous. Game informer released an Final fantasy game count and one note said there releasing 13 more Final fantasy games in the next 8 years, 6 of which are gonna be about Final Fantasy 7.

3D Realms knows Duke Nukem 3D is fun and great and now there milking the teet of Duke 3D till its concave. Its business and it works to this day.

I think 3d Realms are already devoting a lot of time to DNF but it can't be their only project you know. And I also think that porting DN3D to the XBox gives new players a chance to experience DN3D, which is much easier considering a lot of gamers don't play PC games, let alone know how to get DN3D working on modern OS'es such as Vista.

They are, but most people only care about DNF. Duke 3D is to 3D Realms like Doom is to Id. Thats what there known for and thats why there still popular today.

Another example, George lucas and starwars.

wups, did i write dnf, i meant d3d, i hardly await dnf so that was my mistake sorry. I wouldnt say that dnf is too old, im still a fan. I just wanted to say, d3d was a great game no problem there, but now khm its really too old to sell. Thats my point. If it would be free... well then it would be nice, but then again 3drealms looks for employees in my opinion to finish dnf, so why do they use people for remakes of old games, when clearley they dont have enough staff to finish dnf in descent time <- all my complaining is just because i want to play DNF as soon as possible.

Just a quick reminder: Programmers aren't necessarily experienced in doing the same work as artists or level designers etc.
