Thoughts on this new 30" Quad-HD Display
As you may or may not have heard, Gateway just unveiled the first 1600p HD LCD on the market. If not, here's a link to the official site:

http://www.gateway.com/programs/wide...0_overview.php

I'm just wondering, would this really be all hype, or is this *really* a new beginning to something that will make our 8800GTXs all scream with envy? You be the judge. Let's hear your thoughts on this new monitor.

I wouldn't call it the first... honestly its probably just a rebranded Samsung like some of their other higher end monitors.

Heh, a Samsung so good, that it sold out on Newegg. Even so, where do you see this vs. the Apple Cinema 30"?

The Apple 30" is a fantastic monitor, if a bit expensive.

A lot of companies have 30" LCDs now...Dell, Samsung, now Gateway...they aren't special. And 8Iron, why do you think this is the first? Apple released theirs in 2004, three years ago.

Oh, and calling it "Quad-HD" because it has 4 times the resolution of 720p is, in my opinion, stretching it. I consider 1080p to be HD, thus, the only monitor that is "Quad-HD" is the IBM T221 and its offshoots (3840x2400...and discontinued).

720p is HD. Looks good enough... on a 32 inch HDTV.

This "quad HD" tv looks sweet, but a res that high would only really be needed on a screen 40 inches or bigger. Otherwise, it would be a waste, imho.

Monitor is as fantastic as it's panel, Apple is known to use many other panels besides S-IPS which would make the most sence since Apple machines aren't for gaming anyhow.

Ehh, well, here's a review from MaxPC on that Gateway 30". Looks like it's a nice panel for that size, but it's still somewhat pricey: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/gateway_xhd3000

You would think that it would be, pfft, since Acer bought them out (they probably also make their monitors, wouldn't be a bit surprised). Can't be too sure if that review score would hold up.

My reasoning is that you can get two monitors of the same quality for the price of one Apple Cinema Display.

Yes, it was 204 pixels per inch (most monitors are ~100). You can put a 5+ megapixel photo on that, see it all, with room to spare. Such a high resolution caused it to have very low refresh rates (12Hz-48Hz depending on machine and video card), so it didn't do too well. (Costing US$8,399 didn't help either.)

Samsung's 30" is $1,299; Apple's is $1,799. That's far from a 2-for-1 price tag.

The solution to that is to have the game increase the font size, and to use bigger graphics. In fact, in Windows you can change the size of icons (and text, for that matter) without changing the screen resolution. Eventually, GUIs will let you scale up the entire interface at once, so it isn't too small. Once we do that, we can finally give up on 100ppi screens and move on to something that will look much sharper (like the IBM T221).

Also, this 2560x1600 monitor is most likely much bigger than whatever you use 1024x768 on, so you'd be able to see just fine.

Unless I am mistaken, HDMI does not support that high of a resolution. Hence why it is not included.

Has anyone ever used a 30 inch display? It would be awesome for gaming but I'm wondering if you have to sit back from it to take it all in. As it is my 24 inch seems gigantic except when I'm gaming where I wish it was bigger.

I used one briefly once. It was so big that I actually had to move my head around a little to see it all; sitting back any further made it too small to read. I can imagine my neck killing me if I had to use it all day.
