Pre-Overclocked or Standard 8800GTS GPU?
Which would be the better route to go with? I'm debating now, since this is the next component on the list (and I'm hoping to set aside a good $400 for an 8800GTS 640MB), and I'm wondering whether it's better to go with the base card and overclock the card myself, or if I should spend the few extra bucks and hope that a pre-OC'ed one would come in handier? What are the advantages of one over the other?

I'm a fan of BFG Tech and their "OC" line, you can always clock them more.. but you get a little extra bang.

It all depends on what you want.

From what I gathered from the various tests on the web, performance gain is too small compared to the difference in price...which can be huge sometimes. Go for a cheaper card (Gigabyte or something) and overclock it if you wish, cose every one of those card should be a solid overclocker. If you really want to buy pre-overclocked card, go with Gainward, cose these are the cheapest of the pre-overclocked bunch.

Can you tell me the rest of your configuration? I mean, if it isn't some uber pc, the card will be already bottlenecked by something else, so there wouldn't be much point in overclocking.

Edit: Avoid XFX, I heard that people are having warranty related problems with them.

Yeah, factory-overclocked cards don't give much worth for the extra buck. You can (most of the time) OC a stock card to its level, if not then it's because of a better cooler on the factory-OC one. Then again, you can spend the leftovers on a new cooler, which will definetely give a boost in OC'ability.

OC'd card usually is OC'd to the max, and pretty much every stock card will overclock to same or beyond.

Hudson, you've just described the card I got at the weekend -- a BFG overclocked 8800GTS. So far, it works amazingly -- I don't have any games I can't run at 1920x1200 with everything turned on, including the Crysis beta

Well, for the rest of the config that I have collected over the past couple of months, as well as ones coming my way, here goes:

Code:
Compucase IC8290 Blk/Silver ATX Case
Foxconn P35A-S LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor - Retail

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
MITSUMI FA405M BLACK 13-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader - Retail
Compaq Presario 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive (Recycled)

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound Card - Retail
VANTEC HDC-701A-BK Aluminum Hard Driver Cooler - Retail
With a configuration like that, I probably could go with the Foxconn 8800GTS, to match up with the mobo, but who knows what the compatibility would be with the fact that it's a Crossfire mobo (P35, as opposed to 680i)?

Looks like nice configuration. You'll see some benefit from overclocking 8800gts, but having similar configuration, I got more from overclocking the processor.

I actually like Foxconn brand very much but it is expensive here in Croatia and distributers are rare. If you have money, go for it.

Why would you buy Foxconn? Stick with a brand that is known for quality like BFG or Gigabyte.

So that the same company can cover the mobo *and* GPU...

Having worked with numerous products of Foxconn I can reccomend it as a very reliable brand.

As far as your concern about the same company for gpu and mbo goes, it don't really matter. Considering that 99% 8800gts cards are based on unchanged Nvidia reference design, compability should be the same with all brands.

This is no time to be buying an 8800. Nvidia is getting ready to release the GTs, I think in early November. Details are still lacking, but I believe benchmarks have shown ultra numbers, at possibly a GTS price. The gtx/ultras are supposed to get some more shaders to give them the bump again....

Hmm, never knew that, I always thought that the GTs were going to be bottom-performing 8800 cards, that would do worse than the 640MB GTS. I knew about the smaller dyes, but I never knew that those were gonna be clocked that well. However, it's probably best to see if the GTX is gonna see a price drop because of all of this.

Well, I'm wondering if the current 8800GTSs are even gonna be better in terms of performance than the newer GTSs slated? Seems like Jiminator is trying to talk me into a slower card, which won't do for high FPS activity at all.

Bob why on earth did you buy parts for your PC months ago? You could have saved a good chunk of change by waiting till you have all of the money and then buying everything.

BFG Tech>*

Pre-overclocked cards come at a premium.
But then its under warranty.

Doing it yourself is fine.
But you void your warranty.
Just do your research beforehand on what particular card you get.

If the card has standard (nvidia specs) or shoddy cooling, your going to need a better VGA heatsink and fan.

Well, tbh, I started buying components in mid-August, so it's not as long as you think...

From what I can see tho, an OC'ed 8800 could even sell around the same price as another brand's standard 8800, depending on the manufacturer. We'll just need to find that out.

Yes, I'm in between either EVGA or BFG, I hear that EVGA is good, because of their "step-up" warranty. If the GeForce 9 series come out within the first three months of the 8800GTS ownership, then I would only have to pay the difference, or something like that, just as long as it's another EVGA, of course. I'm wondering how that "step-up" bit works?

The main reason I chose this OC BFG 8800GTS (ugh, all those acronyms are NBG ) was that I was hungry and wanted to get something quickly without haggling too much, and I'd gotten my previous 7900GS from the same people at the computer fair. Had to get a new PSU at the same time, but now I've got a spare

Hmm, I'm probably gonna see what that new 8800GT's gonna perform like after all. I'm hoping that it'll perform better than the current line of GTS cards, or even if the newer G92-based GTS cards will be better, but that's gonna be, when... Two to three weeks?
