Just because DX9 is the targetted graphics API does not mean it won't take advantage of some features of DX10. Infact many DX10 cards can force it on through the drivers. And, as I also said, there are other methods of achieving anti-aliased results in DX9-level GPUs without rellying on hardware MSAA.

I'm not disputing whether that image is a render or not, no doubt it is a render being that it was taken from the artist's portfolio, I was just correcting the assumption that the defered renderer means AA = pre-rendered. There's too much "I heard someone say he read that people say this can't happen because of that so it can't be ingame!" non-sense being spread on gaming forums these days.

Further more, game developers often do their best to make renders of their assets look as close to how they want them to look in game as they can. They're called target renders. What will be the difference between that stripper render and it being in game? Maybe slightly lower quality AA, maybe a bit of noticable polygon edges around the sillohette and that's about it. The textures will be the same resolution, common skin shaders give the same quality subsurface scattering as seen here, common hair shaders give the same caustic effect. That render is basically what it will look like in game, at worst it would just be with a slight quality drop. If it were a fully raytraced scene with full GI, billions of lights and incredibly complex geometry then well, yeah, that wouldn't be possible in game, but it's just a (most likely rasterised) render of a character going in the game, there's no part of it that can't be done ingame.

I never said that because it has AA going on it must be a render. I said it was most likely not ingame assuming they hadn't worked around this issue.

I disagree. Based on the XBLA D3D Screenshots. Those where intended as promotion for how the game looks. By this we can assume that they represent the quality for what they had in mind (target-renders as you say, but taken from the actual product). There is a pretty big difference between those "representational screenshots" and the stripper picture above.

I find it highly unlikely that they've been able to progress that much since those screenshots where actual, especially taken into account how far along the project is supposed to have been according to the leaked documents.

Sorry to bring this one back up, but I'm curious what other people think about this. If the game was ~90%+ completed, why would it require a couple million to finish it (~6months of work, I think was the estimate given somewhere)... George went to Take2 and asked for a few million, right?... Those are some huge operating costs, or they had a lot more of the game to finish and probably needed to hire a lot more people to get it done.

Maybe Mr GB likes to play games !
He just knew that Take2 would sue them and he was well informed that 3DR would win the case (80%+ chance to winning) and get the MONEY anyway from them and for free.

They were about a year out, if you were to believe that April was the target date. Operating costs of paying their staff plus keeping the building up and running would easily be in the few million range.

Some graphics programmer could correct me, but I am under the impression that adding a backend for a different or(in this case) newer API to the renderer isn't that big of a deal. AFAIK the code that deals directly with the rendering API is just a small portion of the renderer code(I believe for instance John Carmack has mentioned this).

There are plenty of games that support both DX9 and DX10 and some have even added it in a patch. Anything that represents a small enough amount of work to do in a patch could certainly be done during a games development. The quote about being a full DX9 game was in like 2004 or 2005.

The indie engine Unigine supports DX9, DX10, DX11 and OpenGL 3.2. If I am reading their online development logs correctly support for the latter two were added only some months apart(Although they supported earlier OpenGL version before that.).

Again I am of course willing to be corrected on this by graphics programmers. (I should note that we know that in a period from about Late 2006 until the team was let go in May 2009 they rewrote the animation system, added multi-threading support to the engine, significantly enhanced the AI system, added terrain support to the engine and ported the engine to Xbox 360, all this with two tech programmers(both of which(or at least one) worked on DN3D XBLA AFAIK) and one AI programmer).
