Bbc - Rss
I just noticed that the BBC have got RSS feeds working in IE6!

Anyone know how they have done this?

What do you mean "working in IE6"? IE6 doesn't posses any RSS capabilities.

That's what I thought. Boot up IE6 go to the BBC website and click on any one of the RSS links.

It opens up the RSS fine... Not sure how they have done it and it did not work a few months ago when I last tried. But now it does.

It must be some sort of server side trick I guess but it does feed up RSS info to IE6 browsers instead of getting a page of XML code.

They probably have a sniffer to detect if it's IE6 and if it is then display a parsed page with the RSS content on it to mimic the RSS display.

Ahh, I see what you mean. Rather clever of the BBC.
I had no idea IE6 supported XSL Transforms...

It could simply be a php file rewritten into a xml file using mod_rewrite which then outputs xml for all other browsers except IE6 (or whatever browsers that don't support displaying feeds) which it just outputs html using the rss parsed previously by php.

So I can guarantee that it's not IE6.. it's just a little hack to work around it.

It still loads and XML file which appears to be the same as Firefox gets! Most strange. I do intend to find out how they do it as it's better then just getting code.

Ok figured it out.. was quite simple and did a quick test on my own computer and it worked.

Basically the xml file uses are specific xsl file for the stylesheet for the xml to display it like that. So in the xml file it has this line of code:
<?xml-stylesheet title="XSL_formatting" type="text/xsl" href="/shared/bsp/xsl/rss/nolsol.xsl"?>

and then the xsl file is here:
http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/shared/bsp/xsl/rss/nolsol.xsl

That is what gives it the template.

Simple as that.

Btw good little guide to XSL:
http://24ways.org/2006/beautiful-xml-with-xsl

Though my way of using a sniffer and mod_rewriting would also work but this is more clean

ADM you are a star, I sort of guessed it was something like that but had not the time to investigate.

I like the...

test="contains($title, 'BBC News') or contains($title, 'BBC Election 2005')"

2005!!!

I thought it had something to do with XSLT. Silly me. After years of treating Internet Explorer as inferior, I just presumed its XML support was also as lacking.

Microsoft did bother with some XML stuff. Just didn't bother with RSS until IE7.
Which was probably sensible on their part.

Who would bet against there being a MS RSS in IE 8!

MS never seems to be able to cope with open standards, maybe they find it hard to write software to a strict discipline

MS can't monopolise open standards.
If only they conformed to standards with everything else. Then I'd be a happy chap.
