Decay - An eDuke32 Total Conversion
I decided to go ahead and make a thread about the mod I have been working on in my spare time because I know some people were interested and curious about it.

Basically in essence it's nothing new or groundbreaking as far as gameplay goes. Instead of trying to come up with some complicated and in-depth features such as those that appear in A.W.O.L. I decided to revert the gameplay to the good old days of wanton and gratuitous violence and hacking, slashing, blowing apart and setting aflame of hordes upon hordes of the undead. Decay will include homage's to many games and other forms of media. If you are looking for anything ultra-realistic, then you need not apply.. this is a mod about the LIVING DEAD TAKING OVER THE EARTH for christs sake

Anyone who has worked with me in the past, or is familiar with my style will know that I am constantly adding and changing things to my mods so if you would like to see something don't hesitate to bring it up.

The premise for the story is simple. You wake up one day to find the dead walking the earth, no one knows exactly why and the epidemic has spread beyond control. Loose groups of soldiers and civilians are scattered across the city trying to escape with their lives while the walking dead relentlessly pursue them.

You play as Hudson MacReady ( ) just an average guy trying to make a living at a local pool hall. A small band of survivors have created a makeshift HQ there and have stowed a cache of weapons and ammo planning on making an escape. As usual the group left and never returned (doesn't that always seem to happen) and the dead are relentlessly beating against the storm door which is keeping the place locked up tight. A week goes by with no sign of the group, you have already ran out of food, and the endless sounds of cracking bones and flesh beating against the front of the building has crushed what little sanity you had left to begin with. You now face the fact that no one is indeed coming.. so you draw your pistols and prepare to fight your way out of the city.. or die trying..

Neat Idea. I will for sure try it there has been a lack of good TC especially a Zombie TC.

I was messing around with the blood effects and took a shot for you guys, keep in mind it looks a lot cleaner (not to mention bloodier) ingame. The reason for the midair splatter effects is because I had godmode on and was in the process of getting gang-chewed.

I am sure you could easily have models for those zombies Because, look, for one model you could put several differents skins, and so have different zombies.

Also a zombie is just a modified version of an human, with others animations. It wouldn't be so hard to modify and to animate a already exciting human model.....

You "just" need a little modeller.....

The weapons (minus the UT chainsaw) were modeled by Rayge Khaos a.k.a. Merc awhile back.

The one zombie is from the Doom TC "Zombies" and the other was made for a deceased Duke3d mod "Xorcist" by Kef.

Adding 3D models is something I am not concerned with at this time, I may add them in at a later date however I am more concerned with getting the mod done and released before adding in extra stuff.

Well, I have a bit of an update for you guys. The build that I started working off of to create Decay was originally a mod me and MBlackwell (creator of the praised "christmas project" and "Aliens" mods) were messing around with titled "The Genesis Project". It was going to be a mod with zombies, mutants, giant bees, etc but was scrapped awhile back for lack of time. Anyway, he decided to join back up with me to work on Decay and he will be coding in new weapons and enemies.. and after all they WILL be 3D models. I hesitated at first about putting them in but after the amazing work TerminX has done with eDuke it's too great of a feature to leave out.

I'll update you with some more screens and info as we get more work done.

On a side note I am looking for mappers to create some maps for Decay (you don't have to do all of them, even one a person would suffice). Pretty much what im looking for is the climate of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (for anyone who has played the game) The town has been completely destroyed by the chaos that has unfolded due to the war of the living and the dead, and you're trying to get the hell out of there before the government decides to nuke the place.

Pretty much the maps have to end where you walk though a door (i.e. not the "Nuke Button") but other than that you pretty much have as much freedom as you would like. In fact the more violent the better

If you're interested, just give me a PM and I can set you up with a texture pack or something along those lines.

I had an idea earlier while searching for zombie models (I PMed motionblur but he hasn't gotten back to me yet).

I need you guys opinion on something. Should I use 3D models for the zombies? Or should I have members of the 3DRUBB take pictures (for the frames) with a digital camera? The only thing I ask is that you take the pictures standing in front of some obscure colored blanket or wall or something (like hot pink, neon yellow, etc.) Oh and you have to dress like a zombie too (George Romero style)

So 3D Models, or UBB Zombies?

Pretty easy to imitate a zombie, but you'd have a consequence. You'd have to rip some parts off your shirt off, make your mouth bleed a bit and your face a bit disorted, to give a 'hell'( )-ish feeling.

3DRealms used a digitizer for Duke3d. The weapons in Decay will be 24 bit .png

I think 3d models if that's supported, then we can just download skins from random sites, including CS models.

Alright then, I'll wait and see what motionblur comes up with. He said he was already pretty busy so I told him to take his time. In the meantime i'll just continue to use the current sprite enemies as placeholders.

I already have a weapon list in mind, but are there any weapons you would want to see included? If possible try to stay away from the massively overused ones (i.e. the MP5)

Sweet, thanks for volunteering to do the ten page conversion process for every third party HL model out there. When can we expect you to be done with every HL model available on the internet? I need to just download the skins and insert them into my game!

What about the Panzerfaust weapon? Isn't that the loong rocket launcher like weapon? Try that one, or maybe. Use something similar to Quadshot (I'll say it again: 4 barreled shotgun.)

To tell you the truth I prefer sprites from UBB members as well. The only problem is actually getting people to take the time and make pictures of themselves for it so I can crop them into the art tiles.

If anyone is still interested [u]please</u> let me know, all you need is a digital camera and a neon (or highly distinguishable) background color (for a backdrop) and some dirty clothes. I wont ask you to put on makeup or anything (then again unless you want to ) because gore or not I can always fix them up in another image program. Hell, i'll even name the zombies afrer the peope who participate. (I'm also looking for army personel and police officers.. dead and living)

I just thought it would be cool to release a mod having all the 3DR UBB regulars play the zombies would be wicked cool. But then again its all up to you guys. If not i'll figure something out.

Props goes the person who chooses to wear a blood covered lab cat and a chainsaw though

Besides, wouldn't it be cool to have yourself in a videgame and the credits?

All right boys and girls, put down your shotguns and listen up.

I did a lot of thinking tonight about Decay and where to go with it, and I decided that I will in fact finish, and release it. I'm going to be 21 soon.. going to be finally heading off to collage and doing lots and lots of binge drinking. So time for something like Decay is short and precious.

Decay as stated before will be using the JF/TX eDuke32 port. I will be taking advantage of some of the new features, but not all. Upon releasing Decay I will be releasing it open source and people can do basically whatever the hell they want to do with it (add models, etc). Right now im looking at using hires weapons and some enemies for sure, while some other stuff I don't know yet.

I do have the "story" pretty much done, just don't have anyone to map for it yet (except Roger). Like I said before you play as a guy who sits inside a pool hall until he goes completely friggin insane and decides its time to kill or be killed. He snatches the guns and ammo off the counter, rev's up his "Fleshmaster5000" chainsaw.. hits the switch and prepares to kick some serious undead ass...

1) Your foot. (Unless you're using it to break something, you're fxcked)
2) Colt Python .357 Magnum
3) Remington 870 Pump Action Shotgun
4) Home-brewed Flame-thrower (FRY EM ALLL!!!!!!!)
5) Springfield M1903
6) High Explosives
7a) M-16A2 Full Automatic Assault Rifle
7b) 40mm M203 High Explosive Grenade Launcher
8) Dual 9mm Berettas
9) Timed Explosives
0) <font color="red">CHAINSAW!!!!!!! </font>

Now you won't necessarily acquire these weapons in this order, however these are the ones im planning to use in the game. I may change my mind however so you never know

Post questions, comments, complaints, burning sensations, etc.

[Edit]: Question: Would you rather see dual 9mm Berettas, or dual Colt Pythons and then a different substitute for the pistol?

Tell you what, it's 4:30am right now.. but tomorrow i'll try and make time to snap a bunch of screenshots for you guys

Nacho: If you want to try and digitize yourself to be in the TC go for it man. I just need walking (four positions for each) (five angles: front - front right - right - right rear - rear) eating and dying frames (just front frames will do for these last two)
