Does anyone own a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay pedal
Any of you guitarists own this pedal? I have a question if anyone does. Thanks.

The guy who used to play guitar for my band during high school does. Why? I could ask him about it.

Re: Does anyone own a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay pedal
What I want to know is if I can use the pedal to get the following effect, the Queen "Brighton Rock" echo:

Play a note. The note repeats a set time later on the left, say one second. After another second, it repeats on the right. So it should repeat exactly once on the left, one second after it's played, and then exactly once on the right, two seconds after it's played (one second after the repeat on the left). And each repeat should be at the same volume as the original note.

I know there is a pan setting which will give the left and right effect (assuming you have two amps or whatever), but I don't know if I can get it to do the above because of the volume thing - usually the volume fades down with each repeat. I was hoping not to have to buy two delay units and a splitter to get this effect. So if you could ask him, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Having owned my fair share of guitar pedals I think its unlikely that any pedal would be able to do that in stereo.

He says he doesn't think so. You'll need more than a pedal for that.

Yes. It looks like the Line 6 DL-4 Delay might do it. I read the manual online, but I can't be sure. Anyone have any experience with that unit?

If that won't do it, I'll probably just have to get a splitter and two pedals.

Thanks for asking him for me.

i know it's possible to get stereo delay pedals and i'm pretty sure they'd do what you're asking. i have an ibanez DE7 delay pedal which is pretty cool - does everything the boss pedal does but better (longer delay, cool little push-in buttons, echo mode). if you're wanting to delay your guitar for a recording the best way would be to do it in software. you would only need the pedal if you wanted to do it live, and when you played live you would need to make sure that each amp is on a seperate channel on the mixer, each panned left and right.

The Boss is a stereo delay that does what I'm asking, but I think the volume will fade considerably on the second repeat, which is not what I want. I think the only answer may be two pedals.

Does the DE7 allow you to select the exact number of ms of delay? In other words, can I set it to exactly 734 ms or something? It doesn't look like it, but I'm not sure.

well these things are only as precise as the amount you turn the knob. there's a switch that changes between the ranges 30-160ms, 120-650ms, 480-2600ms and then you use a rotary knob to actually adjust the time. i find you can do it really accurately, but obviously not as precise as typing the number in digitally. you can adjust the delay level and number of repeats, again with a rotary knob. the max number of repeats actually goes on forever, although it does pick up noise each time round so by the 20th repeat it won't sound as good as the first (this is the same with all, especially old analog (tape) delay pedals). you can get pretty much any curve of fading on the delays as you want, in fact you can get it to be louder on each delay. you can get some really cool sounding effects if you play around with the knobs (when in the shortest delay setting). anyway...

it got pretty good reviews here

You mean you could set it so you get two repeats, the first repeat louder than the original, the second louder than the first? How is that possible? Because wouldn't that get way out of control if you had a lot of delays?

ultimately yes but remember you can turn the pedal on and off, so you can play something and it'll delay a bunch of times getting louder each time, and then you can push the pedal off and on again which will clear the memory and start a new delay. when i was talking about the cool sounds you can get out of it by messing about with it at short repeat times, it's because of this effect of echos getting louder. it just saturates the sound so much that you get all these infinitely delaying and changing patterns. in fact i'll record some now, how about that...

here's an example of the difference between the delay and echo settings (attachment). delay is cleaner sounding and more perfectly resembles the original sound. the echo takes off some high frequencies on each bounce. it sounds more natural this way. also, the only way to get the bounces to be louder each time is to use echo. i don't know why, but when you put repeats and delay level up to max in delay mode it doesn't get louder.

and here's another one showing the weird sounds you can get. you can get far more variety than what i've done here. it's just an example of delays getting louder.
