Call of Juarez (PC Western FPS)
This looks nice. The only Western game I've played since has been Outlaws, although there have been couple other ones on the console, not sure if they've been to PC and they were probably dumbed down.

Ray the preacher gets it in his head that some bad people need to die, so he pulls out his trusty six-shooter irons and gets to work. It helps that someone guns down the sheriff right in front him, but I think the intent was there even beforehand. You do have the option, if you desire, to just run around blasting everything in sight, but there's a much cooler – and more effective – option. So long as Preacher Ray has his guns holstered, right- or left-clicking the mouse activates a concentration "bullet time" for a few seconds. This is usually enough time to take out the dusty outlaws that happen to have broken cover, and then it's time to reload...

If you feel like spicing things up, you can tap the Z key for a quick-fire mode with a single revolver. It's a form of low-tech semi-auto for an era devoid of the Uzi 9-millimeter. You can also pull out your Good Book and quote particularly vengeful passages from the Old Testament, a minor feature that I found quite amusing from a perspective of creating ambience. This mission takes you from the church, to a shootout in the town's main street, to preventing a jail break, and eventually has you facing the level boss in front of a saloon you just set ablaze (you blast everybody who comes running out, naturally).

Speaking of fire, the latter part of the mission has oil lamps scattered all over the place which you can pick up, throw at a person or object, and then ignite the fuel. Burn, baby, burn. Not only do the flames look pretty real, but the fire also acts as it might in real life. If something flammable is nearby, it will also catch fire and spread, or you can pick up crates, drop them within close proximity of the fire, and watch them go up in flames...

echland has really set the bar higher with the expansive scope of the areas on display. In all honesty, I can't recall ever seeing 3D play areas this massive in scale; even Planetside didn't achieve this degree of awe-inspiring space. To call it vast is to severely understate the effect. It certainly comes close to capturing the majesty of nature. Not only are there stunning draw distances, but there is also an excess of lush flora and foliage without any lag at all...

In one section of the game, you are stuck in a burning building, so you have to move crates in order to climb onto the roof, jump to an adjacent building, move more crates in order to level out a pair of planks so you can cross a gap, and then shoot a weight level to lower the water tower's hose so you can use it to escape the fire. Other usable objects are buckets, chairs, suitcases, tables, and so forth....

Wow... it actually looks really nice. I need to read through it properly though as i didn't get how linear the game is.... i'd prefer a more roaming western fps.. I think that would be a great game.
[edit]
Plus i loved chrome and specforce

[edit2]
Actually it's just like an improved version of chrome... with larger areas COOL!!!!! It's now on my "to get" list...
I think techland are on their way to becoming a first tier developer.

wow, this game has definitely improve visually, since I last looked at it.

I can't say i really like the look of the trees that are way far off in the screenshots, though.

At any rate, I am pleased to see this:

Quote:
IGNPC: What are your plans for multiplayer?

Pawel Zawodny: I don't want to reveal to much at this stage, but multiplayer is going to be a strong advantage of the game. Wild West allows for a fresh, original, dynamic and varied multiplayer gameplay. The maps and modes will be based on famous historical events and characters, such as the Train Robbery at Wilcox, Wyoming, 2 June 1899 with Buch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid in the main roles.

a bit more from another interview:

Quote:
Gamecloud - Will Call of Juarez have any multiplayer features?

Pawel Zawodny - Yes, it’s an important element In CoJ. We want the players to cooperate with each other to achieve mission goals – kind of like Counter Strike, but set in the Wild West. We’ve also got horses, Apache Indians and beautiful, vast maps witch will make you reminiscent of the best western movies out there. We’ve also added bank and train stick-ups and saloon brawls. You’ll find it all in CoJ’s multiplayer mode.

I wonder if reloading will be a slow process - I think it would be sweet if you had to duck and cover to reload all your bullets, and each shot you make counted more.

Those hills look weird, it's like a pre-rendered Myst game.
Is it because the skybox is so huge, and not crystal clear at the same time?

Also, is this going to be a standard first person shooter? Because the HUD seems to be very advanced to advanced for my taste (bcause I want a standard western first peron shooter like Outlaws )

A Dutch hands-on preview.
The coolest part was about how the developer threw an oil lamp in the air, shot it, so oil flew out and prettty soon everything made from wood was afire Also the buildings and surrounding buildings.
He got some water to extuinguish the fire.

Cool use of physics

The game is supposed to have ralistic gameplay, and from what I read the gameplay is really good. The game only needs some min,or tweaks for a September release.

Re: Call of Juarez (PC Western FPS)
I read the full preview now:

- There will be two playable characters: A priest, and Billy. the priest's brother was killed and all evidence redirects to Billy. It isn't said whether he's innocent or not in the preview.
Billy's life was saved by Native Americans (Indians) and in an Indian Camp he learns using the bow+arrow and a whip.
So while you're the priests you'll do more close quarter combat in the main streets of the western towns, and one-against-one fights, and when the game switches over to Billy you'll play in open fields, with a more stealthy approach (with the arrow and bow probably).
So there are two very different gameplay styles in one game.

- Bullet-time, hell-time, ... Call of Juarez has it too: Arrow Time.
When using the bow+arrow everything will be blurry and slow, so you have the opportunity to aim well. This is only whe you're aiming of course, it's not like there is an assigned key to slow everything down along with a bar of how much you have left
Luckily not, because I hate that approach in games.
So it's only in "bow + arrow aim mode"

- In the beginning Billy will have to prove to the "boss" of the Indian "tribe" he's capable of leaving on his own, so first he'll have to hunt rabbits with the box+arrow, then he'll have to collect a mythical artifact from a very high rocky mountain. Only equipped with his whip.
He'll have to use his whip to swing from branch to branch (from trees) and to fight Eagles and Snakes. All in first person mode (the game is 100% first person view)

- The priest will have two crosshairs when shooting with two pistols, and one shoot button for each hand. That way you can shoot two enemies at the same time
Also, the priest has an attack move on his pistol like in Outlaws, where you use both hands to empty your magazine VERY quickly, almost like a machinegun.

- The priest can citate parts out of the bible to confuse enemies.

- There will be small physics puzzles (à la Half-Life 2 from what I'm reading: moving crates etc...)
You'll also be able to tip over objects so you can use them as cover.

- You'll be able to drive horses

- The graphics are supposed to be "gritty" in town, and "happy" in huge outside environments.

- Sound is supposed to be good too: background music Pistols sound like thunder (figuratively speaking), screaming cowboys when they die, typical horse sounds when they're running, ...

It's not the traditional auto-aim; rather it uses a system of two aiming reticles that move from the outer peripheral inwards, allowing the player to attack multiple targets at once through proper timing.

I hope there are no indoor sections in this game. i played a demo for another techland game called specforce, the outside map was beautiful; lots of forestry, a river, a bridge, and it felt very natural. stepped into the first building and the mapping/graphics looked like a really bad user-created
duke3d level(and thats only if said user was under 10 years old) just terrible, ruined the game for me.

other than that im really looking forward to Juarez.
