Prey Weekly Update #9
Welcome to the latest edition of the Prey Weekly Update series. A few weeks ago you were told you'd get an update from Venom games in the UK on the Xbox 360 version of Prey. That's what we're bringing you today. This week's update is not from Chris at Human Head, but it's by Peter Johnson at Venom Games in the UK.

Chris will return next week with the next Prey Weekly Update. There's plenty to read in Peter's update, so let's get right to it....

We started work in earnest on bringing Prey to the 360 in late June 2005, although we had been looking at the code a little before that to ready ourselves and plan our attack. It was amusing to see on some gaming forums that some posters seemed to think that the announcement about it last month meant that we had just started work on it, this is far from the case.

As our aim was to keep everything as faithful to the PC original as possible, we knew it would be mainly a coding job, with relatively little work needed on the art side. It broke down into a number of tasks - converting the engine itself to get it running on the 360 platform, and the areas where we needed to make changes to better suit the platform - such as the control system, the front end and the integration of Xbox Live.

Can you guess what this achievement is for?
No idea. Will it unveil some Duke Nukem Forever screenshots or something?

It has deffenately something to do with using the Wrench as a weapon...
My guess, is it's winning a MultiPrey fight, with using wrench only...

Nice update, but the controler setup for the crouching looks a little bit strange imo, in most shooters for the Xbox (and it always worked) you can crouch with a click on the right stick and not with the B button...

There will be multiple configs and I'm certatin we will default to different controls, more along the lines of what's standard on 360 shooters.

Edit:

It's not as cosy as I'd hope. We are still desperately in need of a dev kit from MSoft to test Prey. We could begin testing Duke on a dev kit too, but alas...

And an Xbox magazine just came out rating Prey as the #4 game to look forward to this year (#1 was Halo 3, #2 was Oblivion, #3 I forgot). Bottom-line, it can't come out if we don't get a kit to being play-testing it.

To throw my hat in on the Grease Monkey Idea I think it has to do with killing and killing with the monkey wrench.

Basically doing lots and lots of melee kills with the monkey wrench as your prefered weapon.

I hope I get a prize if I'm right.

Even though I don't own a 360, I still found this to be the longest and most interesting update. A lot of good info on how to get Prey to have the closest experience to the PC version. Sounds like a lot of effort they are putting into the development of it. Good read.

If that stuff matters to you. Personally I rather like having free online play on PC, and I could care less if other people see how often I play or how many frags I tally up. Especially considering I'd be more interested in Single Player anyway.

Well, they're sayiung they're trying to make the X360 version as close to the PC version as possible...
So appearantly there must be something the PC version has, that they're trying to add into the X360 version...

Of course, i realize that this is just your opinion, and i can't demand from you that you have to agree with any of us, or reversed...

Seriously. I'm surprised so many people care about Achievements and GamerScore. It's like those guys that put their PC specs in their sig to wave their e-penis.

That being said the only advantage X360 version has is the Live integration.

I didn't read all of it since I am totally not interested in an Xbox version.

Still, there where some interesting parts on porting, more so since I once made a port of MAME (I know, it's not as big as prey but some principles are the same. )

My guess was something with the wrench... But appearantly it's not the case...
Maybe avoiding as many attacks as possible (or even not getting hit once)

Yes, a Grease monkey is some sort of nickname for mechanics/engineers...
So that's why i was counting on the wrench (since it's a mechanics tool)

Would be cool if Tommy could repair ships with the wrench...

Perhaps it involves killing with the mass tow on the shuttle. Or using it to fling the wrench & skewer enemies.
