The Duke and I
In addition to their Prey cover story, Computer Games Magazine (in their May 2006 issue) had a small piece on Duke Nukem Forever, which they titled "The Duke and I". Here's some small quotes from George Broussard from this piece:
  • 3D Realms' trademark sense of humor is still intact. "Duke is a man's man. He drinks He smokes. He enjoys women. Every other game that comes out is World War II or dead serious. Duke is about being the ultimate alien ass kicker".
  • "We've been tech complete for a year. The last year has been making the game, putting the pieces together."
There are no screenshots with the article, but there is some more Duke goodness there for you to check out. Don't want to give away all the good bits here in this story (there's a cool bit where Tom Chick from CGM was asked for his email address).

Oh, and as usual... "When it's done".

I wonder if there's anything "new" in that magazine...

I've had this issue for a couple of days. I'll do some scanning tonight when I get home. The email thing was regarding a computer terminal in the game. Apparently, as you type on your keyboard, you see Duke's animated fingers matching your keystrokes. Hit send on the terminal in the game and you get sent email for real.

It wasn't a very long piece, and the tone of the guy's words seem to indicate (IMO) that it's far from done.

It's hard to recognize, but on the Cover, above the pic of Duke, it looks like it says: "We've seen it bla bla bla"...

Actually, yeah. I figured by the time I bothered to do any scans & get 'em posted somewhere, there would already be half a dozen topics on it anyway. After none appeared, I was was curious how long it was going to take somebody else with a copy to say something.

Funniest part was the guy said George kept reading everything from index cards for the whole presentation.

I have no idea what fuels the motivations of 3dr and what they do. However, I personally would probably show off more of the game in it's completed state.

They could merely be covering their tracks by *not* showing alot of the features or "final" stuff due to other companies stealing ideas or screenshots/video leaking out.

I'm wondering if the mag was told/made to sign no photographing/video of DNF?

Yeah, I'll bet 3DR just wanted to keep the best stuff under wraps. They were probably just teasing CGW with the seemingly early-in-developement content.

At least that's what I WANT to think.

The levels they showed where probably some levels they use to test things out, like perhaps interactive elements. Kinda like the "Zoo" level in Duke3D and the 1998 Quake 2 engine build of DNF.

Perhaps they also showed SOME/parts of the actuall levels in the game but then probably from some of the levels that are in the earlier stages than others.

It seemed like a pretty stupid article to me.

For one thing, the guy spends a lot of time writing about how he didnt get the email, and then he did later due to his spam filter. Jesus dude just say it worked and be done with it, dont waste 10 sentances explaining how you suck at checking your email.

Also, he makes you come off as a frightened little child, GB, but maybe I just misread it.

And he certainly makes the game sound a loooooooong way off. "A few test rooms" ooooh. I have a feeling you guys are a little further along than he makes it seem.

Overall the article really seems to be downplaying the game. I guess the lower the expectations are, the higher the wow-factor will be. The guy didnt sound all that impressed, which strikes me kind of odd.

What else are you referring to that he made sound differently than what you actually said?

Hmm, maybe the whole article?

I agree with you 100%. The writer seemed...."disconnected". In his defense, it sounds like he was most likely told *not* to mention quite a bit of stuff. You notice both recent articles(PC GAMER and now Computer Games) have been shown the game but have not mentioned how the actual game *looks*? Nothing along the lines of "The engine 3dr has cooked up looks comparable to Unreal Engine 3" or something like that.

It goes without saying that us fans would like to get a look at DNF soon too.

Nice bit. Yes, the author seemed disconnected but I think he was asked to be. Anyone would have wanted to comment on the graphics and what they actually saw but this was meant to be a status update for the rest of the world and the media. That was probably the deal. Duke's not meant to be "shown" in any form, except via the opinions of a Shacker standing outside a movie theatre, ten inches away from ninja death.

I found the article somewhat dissapointing myself. Maybe the guy was told not to say certain things, maybe he sucks at writing, or maybe out of what he saw the e-mail thing was the biggest deal to him -- all of these things considered, the article itself is weak. The worst part of course, is making Duke look like its been in development for only a year with a few "test rooms" done, and that's it

This, I am sure, is not the case; but it doesn't make DNF look any better to a person who knows next to nothing about its current status. I mean, someone seeing DNF these days is big, big news, and to have a ho-hum writer say "Oh, well, there's this e-mail thingy...real cool. Oh, and test rooms!" is downright scary.

Hopefully a follow-up article here or there might dispel some of these worries.

George does say they've been tech complete for a year and have spent the time since putting the game together. He could have said that the content was being developed before that too but it's logical that the artists and designers wouldn't just be sitting on their hands.

I wouldn't expect a follow-up article unless it's in the same vein and alongside Prey. This is not the lifting of the A51 media embargo.

I didn't find the bit about the author not getting the e-mail to be that bad. It just read like an anecdotal way of saying that the feature is in and working.
You're welcome! And I agree, it conveys that the computer e-mail interaction and other similar whacky details are in and he/we should keep the faith... oh and check our spam filters occasionally.
