Prey Wins E3 Best of Awards

Well, the annual sensory overload in Los Angeles known as E3 is over. Now come all the game websites giving out their awards for best of show in various categories. Today we bring you the news that Prey has won in the "Best Shooter" category from Gametap. Here's some of the text from the press release:

LOS ANGELES - (May 18, 2006) - GameTap, the first-of-its-kind broadband entertainment network from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) today announced the winners of its first annual "E3 2006 GameTap Picks" awards. While scouring the vast Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) show floor at the Los Angeles Convention Center from May 10th - May 12th, GameTap created its nominee list. And now, after careful deliberation, GameTap editors have selected the best of the best in 20 categories.

Some of the other categories they listed were Best Simulation Game (Spore), Best Sports (Wii Sports), Best Action Game, Best Platform Game, and even Best Swag!

This game sounds, looks and is certainly very impressive from what I've read. I really hope the demo shows it to be all that and the bag of chips it seems to be.

I know that, but it's posted front row center on the VE homepage with a caption that says "We sniff out the best titles of E3 2006", so it isn't very clear.
Does this mean that the 'Prey' list is Apache's personal take and the 'non-Prey' feature that of the IGN (PC) conglomerate as a whole (which VE is part of)?

The Features is just the features of IGN as a whole.. the best of awards feature that Prey won is from VE3D only.

I just browsed through the E3 award features of the other two major (US) game sites and even though I've gotten the impression that Prey didn't really draw too much attention at this year's expo, it's still a bit surprising that I didn't see either Gamespot or Gamespy give Human Head's game a single mention.

Bioshock won cross-platform "best of Show" at both, BTW.

They're the VE awards. I picked the winners with Steejee, so they are very focused. The IGN and Gamespy awards are all voted by the IGN and Gamespy guys (dozens of people), so it's more of a popularity contest than anything else. I'm not sure how popular action games are with those guys.

It's really because the demo was multiplayer only, and while the multiplayer was fantastic, it's not exactly the main draw of Prey. It's a basic death match mode, with some interesting gameplay mechanics.

That's an interesting way of saying the IGN and Gamespy (and Gamespot?) awards are less tainted by personal bias.

As for action game popularity:

- Half of Gamespy's top ten are action games, four if Bioshock is excluded.
- IGN has award categories for both PC action and PC FPS titles.
- Gamespot has a "Shooter" category, as well as platform awards; the PC winner is Quake Wars, with Crysis and Dark Messiah as finalists.
