Prey Weekly Update #21
Well, it's June 2nd, and we're twenty days away from the demo launch on the PC & Xbox 360. The game is closer to release, and as such, Chris Rhinehart has had to ask for backup for this week's weekly Prey update. This is again not Chris, this is Joe Siegler of 3D Realms. Chris asked me this in an email.. "Would YOU like to do the weekly update this week? Give 3DR's perspective on what you've been working on over the past couple of weeks or so?"

While my personal involvement outside the forums is mostly deathmatch testing, I said I'd take a stab at it. So without further ado, here goes the Prey Update for this week.

Wow, very Doom 3-esque, but I'm glad because that means it'll run very well. Can't gety enough of the gravity and portal effects, though. You bastards... everytime you release a game, I waste 50-60 dollars.

It's quite interesting to be in a map looking straight up, and seeing another character doing the same thing to you - up and down are quite different concepts here, and seriously impact how you play deathmatch.
Hmm, yes! I never even thought of that.

The shot you refer to is from a map in the full version. There's no demo bathroom.

Which is why I must buy it. Without buying it, how can one truly experience Prey without hiding in the bathroom?

Actually, if you're playing a game in that level, you can't completely hide. One of the weapon spots is in there, plus there's a spawn spot, too.

Nice update Joe. Does anyone notice the very funny irony in this shot:

Draz, I got stuck in spectator mode because I was trying to take screenshots of the tally screen there.

If you think logically, it's impossible that he was spectating, or where would Vagabond get his 20 frags from?
Fragging yourself doesn't count like a frag, right?

Thats the way it should be done. Console FPS games should work to the gamepad instead of just relying on autoaim.

It looks too much like the multiplayer menu from other games, especially id games, but on the other hand the font makes it easier/quicker to read. The Quake look turns me off, actually, even though I like Quake. Appearance matters

My thoughts were, that it looked alot like Doom 3's menus (same colors, and stuff) but that didn't botehr me at all, and the background loos awesome (the sphere)... Better than a rotating mars planet...

And if the background of the sphere is animated, it would be even greater...

Man... I'm happy reading about a printed manual. Most games still use em true, but a lot of games don't. And I hate getting a game and not having a manual.
It gives me something cool to look at and read while the game installs.

What, you mean how they don't use placeholders and just center the number? It doesn't really bother me at all, as long as the info is all there.

Most games stick with a very simply scoresheet that is easy to read, and Prey doesn't seem to be any different. As long as I can hit tab/ctrl quickly to see who's ahead and my own place, its good enough for me.

I fully agree. A manual is one of the things that is missing from most games. Even when the manual is on the disc and can be read that way, sometimes it is needed in-game.

Keep up the great updates.
