DEMO UPDATE: 360 Demo
We do not want 360 people waiting up for the demo or having false expectations.

The 360 demo will not appear on Marketplace tonight.

I'm still waiting for specifcs, but I'm being told that it's still in testing at Microsoft. From what I understand this isn't Microsoft's fault, and is more likely just an issue of timing.

I'm hesitant to give any estimates for a release, but I've been told it should be reasonably soon after the pc release, but could be as long as a few days.

We will post an update as soon as we have more solid information.

I signed up on the forums just to say this:

George.... thank you. Most developers wouldn't let us know if a demo was not to be released and make us wait all night (remember "The Outfit"?). But you did, and I appreciate that.

I applaud you sir... and you just sold a copy of Prey.

Ahh well, at least I won't be d/ling the demo in a lightning storm anyway. As I said, hopefully it'll be up and running when I wake up in the morning (usually around 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM EST). It'll be a long download, since I only have a 256KB cable connection (the family can't afford any faster, what can I tell ya?)...

Re: DEMO UPDATE: 360 Demo
I gotta say, I'm way bummed about this delay. I was really looking forward to playing this tonight.

Since this is the only time I'll ever post in these forums and getting flamed doesn't bother me all that much, I'll go ahead and say that 3D Realms/Human Head shouldn't have made such a big deal about this demo being out on the 22nd (see the weekly updates, news quotes, etc.) if it wasn't going to happen.

I know absolutely nothing about the inner-workings of XBL, and even I realize that if I ever delivered content it would have to go through extensive testing and re-testing before being made public.

What's done is done, and seriously, this delay affects about .05% of people who will eventually buy the game, but I hope that developers start accounting for the delay between delivery and release when spouting off about release dates.

Game looks sick though, excellent work.

I would be willing to bet the standard for testing is way more stringent for an Xbox demo than a PC demo, simply because the distributor of the demo on Xbox is also the hardware manufacturer, and network provider. It's a much more cohesive and interdependent system than PCs on the Internet.

If there's a serious bug in the code of a game demo, Microsoft would have to deal with any damage it caused to their customer's hardware, or any network issues it causes on Live! They have a LOT more to lose than Gamespot. There is a certain quality assumed with Xbox Live since people pay monthly subscriptions fees. Two of the expectations is that the service will be available, which poorly written software could threaten (hell, 50KB of malicious code in the form of an email worm has nearly brought the Internet to it's knees on occasion), and the second being that anything you download from it will be safe to run on your console. While I'm sure gaming sites online worry about this kind of stuff to some extent, they don't have the same vested economic interest in it the way a closed system like Xbox Live! would.

Doesn't matter what you do. They sh!t on you for being slow, or they sh!t on you for releasing buggy software. People are never happy.

This is likely a growing pain for a relatively new platform, as game publishers may need to understand that they need to get their demos to them a little sooner in order to guarantee a launch date and time.

No big deal. Now you'll get a few more days of anticipation listening to the PC people talk about how great it is.

Thanks for telling us George. Saved me waiting up.

Re: DEMO UPDATE: 360 Demo
Appreciate the heads up.

As Scream said, you guys need to cut Microsoft some slack. These guys are responsible for maintaining a quality online game service and it is a GOOD thing there is QA, testing and specific standards. This is what we are paying for! Ever use a Windows application that did not adhere to windows design standards? Ever use a program that wasn't adequately tested? Bad releases can leave a bad taste in people's mouths who are part of Xbox live. Remember, not everyone who uses Xbox live is computer-centric. That is kind of the point...to bring all sorts of gamers together and make it easy to have fun. No worries about video drivers or someone releasing the latest AIMBOT or GLHACK.

My recommendation is to :

- Go up to marketplace and download another demo while you are waiting for Prey. If you haven't tried Lost Planet yet...DO IT NOW!
- Try getting a couple of achievements in games you haven't touched in a while. I've been going back to Call of Duty 2 to pick up veteran points.
- If you have a good PC, you can always download the demo for it! I have a Dimension XPS that is more than capable, but I want to experience the game the way I intend to play if I purchase it.

It really does seem like everyone just loves to hate on Microsoft sometimes even if it isn't warranted.

Re: DEMO UPDATE: 360 Demo
To be fair, Microsoft has already been bitten by a defective demo at least once before. They let Ubisoft put up a demo of King Kong (several months after it's retail release) and 50% of the demo was unplayable because an event failed to trigger. Naturally, people blamed MS even more than Ubi for that.

So if anything, their testing policies probably became more strict after that.
