ROTT sound format
Hi,

Does anyone have any technical info relating to how the sound effects and music are stored within the ROTT WAD file?

I can't find this in the ROTTHACK docs or the ROTT FAQ.

Thanks,
Tony

Re: ROTT sound format
Well I came to the conclusion that they were probably stored in the VOC format?? I could be wrong I haven't got as far as playing them back yet. I would prefer it if they were in WAV format though, my engine would then be able to play them back from the original WAD without having to convert them

What tool did you use to extract the data? It's possible that tool conveniently extracted them to WAV format for you??

I'm not real sure of the name, it was some popular wad editor that was really made for doom. Oh yeah, i think it was WAD Manager!
Here's a link

Oh, and please be sure to let me know if it worked out for you or not.

Re: ROTT sound format
Hey thanks for that. I've downloaded the file and I'll check it out shortly.

I've been writing my own ROTT RTL and WAD utilities for another project I'm working on, but the sound didn't seem to be in a DOOM RAW like format.

I'll let you know how I get on, I'm making good progress with other bits, so it may be a little while before I get back to looking at sound again.

Cheers,
Tony

All the game's sounds are on the game's CD in .wav format

Yes I know, thanks Moonbuzz.

I've been writing an experimental ROTT engine that is compatible with RTL/WAD files and was trying to figure out how to play the sounds.

Re: ROTT sound format
I went through the ROTT WAD file with a ripper which detects file formats and it found 200-odd VOCs. The MIDI files are all standard MIDIs, the only bit I have difficulty dealing with are the graphics. I know they are a type of RAW with a header, but I can't manage to write a viewer or converter for them. You could load TRILOGO into Photoshop as a RAW with dimensions 200X320, rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, change the colour mode to Indexed and load the ROTT palette into the image and it'll look right, but the rest are even more difficult.
Anyone know the format of the font (LIFONT, SIFONT, NEWFNT1) files?

Re: ROTT sound format
As for the graphics I think I have already cracked that one. I never checked the code with ROTT WAD graphics but if it doesn't work it should be fairly easy to adapt it.

You can pick up my code at:
http://www.raven-games.com/eheretic

I've put all the ROTT dev work I've done on indefinate hold, for reasons I've gone into elsewhere (in summary I'm tired of banging my head against a brick wall), but if I get time I'm happy to test my WAD graphics code out on ROTT WADs.

You'll also find a little util I did on that site for spying into ROTT WADs (and that has been tested on ROTT WADs too). You may find it of use.

If you don't find what you need let me know, I have more lurking on my disk.

Re: ROTT sound format
Is there any way to change the rate of fire, damage, or hit points for enemies and weapons?

I was thinking of making a Matrix TC for ROTT

Re: ROTT sound format
No I think these would be part of the engine.

Some sort of binary editing might do it though.

We would need to convince 3DR that releasing the code would be cool.

Re: ROTT sound format
There is a ROTT WAD editor that lets you change the sounds and images, but that's it.

If you wanted to add other stuff, you might have to do some combinations (for example, if you wanted to make a bazooka that could fire heat-seekers, you might have to splice the two together), or if you wanted to have limited ammo, you would have to do some heavy editing.

But that might be illegal.
