Duke3D's Shrink Ray FTW
One of the coolest things that Duke Nukem 3D had going for it was it's arsenal of weapons. There were the usual shotgun, rocket launcher type things, you know - good ol' first person shooter staples. But Duke Nukem 3D didn't stop there, it went further with one of the more classic weapons ever in a game - the shrink ray. Basically, you'd fire it at an enemy, and he would shrink, at which point you could step on him like an ant. It was quite funny, and was later expanded in the Atomic Edition with an alternate fire mode to "expand" someone.

Anyway, the MSNBC website posted an article a few months back about their choices for Top 5 first person shooter weapons. We were just made aware of this, but wanted to point it out to folks. Here's what they had to say about the shrink ray:
Aliens have landed on Earth, determined to destroy all mankind. Luckily for us, Duke has an arsenal at his disposal, and he's willing to use it.

Out of all the weapons available in "Duke Nukem 3D," we love the Shrink Ray the most. Not just for what it does (shrink your enemies down to a few inches in height) but for what it allows us to do afterwards (step on them like a bug).

Getting to inflict a little extra insult to injury is what makes this weapon so special - because nothing humiliates a friend more than crushing them with your boot.
The other weapons they chose were the Gravity Gun in Half-Life 2, the chainsaw in Doom, the Railgun in Quake II, and the pistol from Halo. A pistol?

(Before you ask, it's "For the Win", we don't need a discussion on internet acronyms here - thank you).

Joe's there's a more recent article too, "Top 5: Worst ways to die" discussed here. You might want to feature it on the main page.

Somebody at MSNBC must be a Duke fan.

shrink ray is super fun and very useful against certain enemies that otherwise would take a lot of hits (fat commander, enforcers and octabrains).

too bad it doesn't do any damage (like freezer) because shrinker is useless against all end-episode bosses and the thing that bugs me is that sometimes you CAN actually shrink mini-battlelord but other times you can't. what gives? anyone can provide clear info on that?

as for expander - it was cheap, effective and logical way of introducing new weapon of course but it's not that effective. you can use it on assault trooper that is in the middle of the monster bunch so the explosion would kill others or damage them but expander is totally useless against the new aliens which is strange since they are immune to shrink ray, so naturally i assumed they would have weakness for the expander... it usually takes almost 20-40 ammo to explode one of these.

Nothing says “I own you” quite like running across a room and using the shrink ray.

for the larger enemies like the mini battlord, you have to duck and aim between the legs (serious) i know its weird and its the only wepon i use vs them due to the fact that i never use autoaim (unless i cant turn it off like in cduke, xduke is kind of weird for me because you HAVE to have autoaim with hitscan weapons (like pistol) but you can turn it off for pojectile weapons like the rpg or shrinker)

and i actually find the freezer to be a very effective wepon vs the end bosses, each crystal does 30 damage and its rapid fire... try it, it wont freeze them, itll actually kill them.

it's good yes but i prefer rpg or devastator for bosses, especially devastator, it just rips through them. freezer is awesome agains the atomic edition aliens.

Yea, playing Halo 1 multiplayer with my cousin helped me realize why its on that list. Halo 1's pistol does great damage, has a nice clip size and most importantly its got a slight zoom and great accuracy so u could snipe with the bloody thing. That thing is deadly if you got good aim.

Basicly it's is like a .357 magnum that has the accuracy and distance of a hunting rifle.

I approve, the Shrink Ray definitely were one of the things that made me love the game...

It bugged me that small enemies wouldn't be more vulnable to other weapons while shrunk, but whatever... Stepping on them (if i could reach them) was definitely myfavorite way of finishing them off

The shrink ray will be useful when I use it on Dognose then flush him down a toilet in DNF deathmatch.

Other people's versions of the fact include "aiming for his chaingun". But I prefer the crotch version.

It makes sense though...
overall he can withstand the Shrink Ray, but even his balls aren't man enough to handle it...

Re: Duke3D's Shrink Ray FTW
The shrink way is a cool weapon indeed, kinda looks like the BFG from doom. Kinda still on the topic, will the shrink ray have a cooler blast effect than just shooting BFG like balls at people in dnf?

Actually, it's just that the actual Shrink Ray projectile won't affect the Battlelord Jr. if it's a direct hit, but its splash damage will. So just fire it near him.

Spoken true.

I remember that little bug, when a lizard trooper was shrunk and you shot him, he shot back and stayed small. I tried that on some battlelords (bank roll):
I shot like hell into the safe and all the barrels exploded hitting the shrunken battlelords. I did this in multiplayer and laughed my ass off when my friend shouted:"Where's that damn battlelord!!! *dies again*"
