This is the greatest XBL news ever. DN3D is still my favorite fps to this day. Amazing how well it still stands up after all these years for fun and intensity. I still remember running 200' of phone line across the lawn to my neighbors house to direct connect so we could DM locally w/o having to move all our bulky setups (my IBM monitor back in '96 weighed more than my kids).

Just want to thank everyone @3D Realms who are making this possible and hopefully enough people get behind it to warrant bringing later expansions and (crosses fingers) Shadow Warrior as well.

This is such awesome news, I haven't been this excited for a video game in quite some time. Duke 3D was what first got me into PC gaming. I still remember the days of dukeworld.com and #3drealms on IRC

I also remember getting a $300+ phone bill for calling up the TEN network (which was long distance for me) on dial-up to play some Dukematches. And still to this day I have friends that I originally met in the Duke modding community whom still do mods/TCs (do they call them that still?) for Duke 3D.

Anyways, first things first, just wanted to say thanks to George and the 3DRealms crew for making one of my all time favorite games, and now bringing it to Xbox Live Arcade to play online (without the massive phone bill)

Second the question I am wondering is if we'll have the chance to play you guys at some Dukematches? Any plans for like a "game with developer" night on XBL, or any random encounters with you guys?

If so I totally want first dibs

That would be wonderful idea. Give George, Joe, and some of the guys @ 3DRealms a "break" from DNF for a night or two to sit down and play some DN3D with the fans.

I've never cared for Games with Devs in the past featured on Xbox, but this one would be totally worth it

I'll get so jazzed when I first see a Duke Nukem 3D banner ad on my Xbox 360 where I see all those other game ads.

First time I saw that for Prey a couple of years ago, I was pretty pumped.

I'm seriously thinking it'll be September 3rd, since XBLA games are only released on Wednesdays, and the only known release date for any upcoming games is Castle Crashers, which is in 2 days (or tomorrow, depending on timezones)

Random question: does the XBLA version of Duke3D still have the "problem" the PC version has with the freezethrower where the animated firing tiles are incorrectly offset a few pixels from the underlying tile?

Another random question: judging by the screenshots/videos, the XBLA version displays the in-game 3D view by rendering to a texture and plopping the result on top of the background image, with the new menu stuff overlaid on top of that. I'm also guessing the bi-linear filtering is just filtering applied to the resulting texture as opposed to filtering every sprite/texture individually as would be done with a hardware accelerated renderer. Is that correct?

I'm also curious as to whether Ken's C replacements for all of the ASM used in the Build renderer were used, or whether the x86 ASM was ported/rewritten for the 360's hardware.

Almost wish I had a 360 for this, but using a controller to play a FPS for me is about as frustrating as I imagine something like physical therapy to learn to walk again would be.

I'm not the programmer, but as I understand it, the underlying code we started with was the game as it was when we last messed with it in November of 1996. I don't think things were re-written as such in terms of the things you are talking about.

Yeah, but there's code in Build which will only run on x86 based platforms (mostly rendering stuff written in x86 ASM for speed reasons). A cross-platform version written in C of all that code exists but it's not as fast as the assembly.

A 360 can probably keep pace with the C version of the code (depending on what resolution the viewable area is), but I know if I build the PC version of the game without compiler optimizations and without the assembly, the original software renderer can get pretty slow at a high enough resolution.

I'm mostly just curious as someone who works with the Duke and Build code a whole lot. Changes to it fascinate me.

can you set the hud to only show ammo and health, without the huge bar on the bottom ?

is the right stick used for looking up and down ? if yes can you turn it off ?


in the interview george said you can view your demos and then jump into the game and play
what happens when I download a demo from someone off the internet. can I jump into his demo/game as well ? wouldnt that let me cheat very fast times on the leaderboard ?

Again, not a programmer. But I know we didn't rewrite the old game code. We basically added a wrapper on top of it for Xbox LIVE functions, and only went into old code when things broke. We didn't rewrite stuff on the order you are talking about.

As far as I know, anyway.

Well, guess I'll be happy to buy a download of this. Might as well play Duke and hope that I don't wind up with an RRoD playing it... Although, it won't be nearly as fun as doing stuff on the PC, tho, as far as modding and what not.

That's actually a really good question

The Teamxbox preview I believe said something about 15 second intervals, so I'd imagine you can only play from those intervals, but from the screenshots it doesn't look like that

I'd imagine they set something up where time trials is a separate leaderboard, and you can only watch those demos, not play them.

If you jump into a clip, you can't use it for leaderboards or saving games, or anything like that. You can jump into it, you can play it, but you can't "do" anything with it effectively.
