I/O error while trying to access DVD-RW.
My brother told me he had some trouble accessing his DVD-RW drive, that when he clicks on it in My Computer, it says "Can't access D:\, I/O error" or something like that.

Does this mean that the cable is broken, maybe a software setting, or something else? The drive has power and can be seen in My Computer as well as the device manager (has the drivers installed). However, when I try to click on it, or go into the device manager and click DVD-RW properties>volume tab, then click populate, the error comes up again.

Is there a CD/DVD in the drive?

When I click on populate on my computer, it shows I have a CD in the drive, when he does on his machine, that error comes up.

Here is a silly question, but have you tried restarting the computer?

Also, you could try a Windows Update just for kicks.

What happens when you put a formatted CD/DVD in the drive? Does the drive light flash as if it was accessing anything?
In 'My Computer,' does the name of the icon change from 'DVD-ROM D:' to the name of the disk in the drive?

When he puts a DVD or CD in the drive, it still says CD drive instead of the DVD's label (eg. SimCity 3000). It does not list any IDE controllers in his system, so I'm assuming the drive is a SATA DVD-RW drive. Just says Intel ICH8R under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Also lists Primary and Secondary channels, but the drive is installed on the Intel one. Haven't looked inside the case though.

He's going out so he'll be back in a bit, so he should have some more answers for me.

If the light keeps flashing fast and sometimes slow the lens might be filthy or faulty.
If the light keeps flashing in constant speed the drive might be faulty.

What burning software does he have on it?

I had a smiliar problem on my drive and a beta game or Roxio screwed it up.

I'll have to ask him this weekend. I think it's only with reading stuff though. Not sure about writing. Then again if he can't read it, the CD burning program wouldn't know what type of media it's burning to (CD/DVD...).

He said when he tried to watch a DVD on it, it wouldn't read it. I think he said CDs were messed up too.
