Re: Radar Group
Radar Group Announced
Prey 2, Earth No More and others on the way with partnership from new creative house.
by Chris Roper
US, March 17, 2008 - Radar Group today took the veil off of its operations, announcing the company's plans and three of its first titles. Radar Group, which was originally founded in June of 2007, will work with developers on co-creating original IPs to leverage them across multiple media outlets, from games to movies to comics to TV and more.

The group is not a standard publisher, but will work with developers until their titles are mature enough to pitch to a publisher for distribution. It will also work with its partner, Depth Entertainment, to work on the movie industry side of things and help bring its IPs to the big screen.

Radar Group announced three titles today - Prey 2, Earth No More and Incarnate. According to the press release, "Earth No More does away with the "lone-hero" shooter archetype, instead focusing on the dynamic between an ensemble cast that must learn to work together to survive the threat of an environmental extinction event. As Will Foster, a DHS chemical weapons specialist, you are among the first to respond to a gas attack on Washington, D.C. However, it soon becomes clear that the gas attack is a cover-up for something much more sinister. Earth No More is currently being developed in close collaboration with Recoil Games and is slated for release on next-gen consoles and PC."

It has the following to say about Incarnate: "Incarnate poses the question: Can evil ever die? The re-incarnated souls of history's most evil people are converging on present-day Chicago. As Thomas Ludlow, you are recruited by a secret organization to hunt down and capture these 'Incarnates'. But the further you dig into the reasons for their arrival, the more you learn of the true nature of your efforts and your own connection to the events unfolding before you. Stalk your prey in the wide open city, search for them in the dark places, and maybe you will survive long enough to solve the mystery of your own past. Can you break the chains of destiny, or will you let them bind you to your doom? Incarnate is currently being developed in collaboration with a yet-to-be-announced studio."

The most well-known franchise on the list is Prey 2, the follow-up to the PC and Xbox 360 release from a couple years back. Here's what Radar Group has to say about the sequel: "The follow up to "Action Game of the Year" (PC Gamer), reprise your role as Tommy, the native warrior who saved Earth from alien invasion in Prey. This time, abandoned and framed for the disappearance of his family and girlfriend, Tommy escapes an Earth that no longer wants him for a future that cannot survive without him. Building on the mind-bending portal and gravity-defying gameplay of the original with several innovative new twists, Prey 2 promises to once again take players into a compelling science-fiction world with breathtaking visuals and adrenaline-pumping action gameplay. Prey 2 is currently being developed in cooperation with Human Head studios and slated for Xbox 360 and PC platforms."

Radar Group is headed up by CEO Jim Perkins, CCO Scott Miller, Executive Creative Director Raphael van Lierop, and VP of Strategic Partnerships Dave Adams.

I'm liking the sounds of this, sort of like a return to the old Apogee days where IPs were developed with collaboration between developer and publisher.

Max Payne 2, yes. Max Payne 1 was a direct creation *OF* 3DR & Remedy.

Remember, we sold the rights to the franchise to Take 2 after Max 1 was out. 3DR & Remedy were officially hired by Take 2 to produce Max Payne 2. While to you the end user it wouldn't make much difference, to us here it's a big difference.

Re: Radar Group
I now have an official story about all this up on the 3DR website.

http://www.3drealms.com/news/2008/03...announced.html

The most important part of all this (and how it relates to 3D Realms) is the following paragraph:

One final note about this announcement. It does now mean that Prey 2 & Earth No More which had previously been announced as 3D Realms titles are no no longer so. These are Radar Group titles. 3D Realms will of course be related, as Scott Miller is at both firms. Think of Steve Jobs at Apple & Pixar. It's kind of like that. Before anyone asks, this won't affect Duke Nukem Forever. Duke Nukem Forever remains a 3D Realms title, and all this Radar stuff will not affect DNF in any way, as none of the internal DNF 3D Realms staff is working on any Radar titles, other than Scott Miller in an advisory fashion.

I don't know. Too early. Officially, as I said in the article ENM & Prey 2 are not 3DR titles anymore. What we do will be unknown for the time being.

You worry too much.

This is quite interesting to me. I see why the company was split up, makes sense that way but I just hope it doesn't affect 3DR as a whole in any way.

Mainly things like if 3DR will still get revenue from those IP's which were under the 3DR banner before but are now split off.

Oo! The midi version of that with the Apogee logo intro would be awesome in DNF. After the Apogee intro is halfway through, explosion rips the picture open and blasts a full 3d 3D Realms logo on the screen accompanied with a real metal Grabbag with duke saying something fitting.

The only name for Radar is radar, they are unrelated to 3D Realms.

3D Realms used to be Apogee Software before they changed their name.

3DR is simply an alias for Apogee. Radar is not an alias for Apogee, it is a completely separate entity that 3DR may or may not even be an owner in, we don't know. Just like Gathering Of Developers was a separate entity and not just as another name for Apogee.

Apogee was an owner in Gathering Of Developers but not the only one there where others such as Remedy and Epic. We don't know anything about that with regards to Radar Group other than that the CEO Jim Perkins is an owner there.

3D Realms doesn't gain anything. The Prey and Earth No More trademarks are still owned by 3D Realms but I suspect they will be transferred to Radar Group and possibly the developers of those games in co-ownership soon enough.

This isn't an Apogee thing, it's a Scott Miller thing. 3D Realms must stand on their own two feet now.

If 3D Realms won't seen any future profits to be made off these franchises, one might wonder about the terms of the transfer/separation. I don't suppose they would just give Prey 2, ENM away.

This situation reminds me of what Scott said he'd wanted Valve to do, make Steam an independent company so there's no conflict of interest.
