Interesting. All I can confirm is that the pictures next to The Resistance, The Demons and The Daughter have DOOM4 in their names (although come from different games). Also Mick Gordon has "Unannounced FPS" as his current project. Maybe it's legit indeed.

Some other recent stuff.

* Go to the fifth page of this nVidia PDF about Tessellation. There's a creature resembling DOOM 3 Imp, copyrighted by id's Kenneth Scott in 2008 - when the development of the new DOOM began. Probably it's just a modified Imp for testing tesselation but it's kind of interesting.

* You have probably heard about some new years's layouts at id. Some people from the DOOM team have been let go. That spawned some recomendations for them and some mildly interesting quotes:

"I briefly worked with him on one of the intro cinemas on Doom 4. He achieved the required tasks and then went above and beyond, adding even more scripted events to add to the overall impact of the scene." Mark Bristol (Art Director) on Wayland Fong (Associate Technical Designer)

"Outside of lighting I have seen Mark work with actors on live action shoots. It was a great experience to see Mark outside of the studio building sets, giving direction to actors and getting out of them the most compelling and dramatic scenes for our in game cinematic events." Gary Bergeron (Senior Artist) on Mark Bristol

It's been mentioned on QC09 by John Carmack that compared to RAGE, DOOM guys have a lot of scripted, cinematic stuff going on. They're definitively taking it seriously.

* Lastly something for Ati users. Carmack confirmed that DOOM will support HD 7970 mega texturing.

q: Are you going to add support in Rage for the 7970's hardware PRT Mega texturing anytime soon?
a: 7970 hardware virtual textures are limited to 32k, so it requires layout changes to avoid tex crossing. Doom will support.

It so looks like the Imp from Doom 3. Very, very nice model.

Well, Thao Le is an id employee. According to his resume, he's associated with both RAGE and DOOM. There's a DOOM logo in one of the shots, another is called "before hell wave". There're id console messages in several shots and you can argue some shots look a lot less destroyed than what you'd expect from RAGE universe. There are buildings being consumed by something that can point towards Hell corruption... or Dead City from RAGE.

Also maybe I'm missing something but I don't see any buttons to access those sections from the main site.

Then again, why would he post that considering complete info / media blackout? That kind of doesn't make sense.

It's too early for RAGE 2, but maybe it's RAGE DLC or something. Maybe some testing environments. Or not. Who knows...

EDIT: Just noticed that one of the shots in the pack posted on DW (can't see it on the site) has XP bar with a W:\Doom4 and idTech5 Launcher. As far as I see the pack has character models that aren't on Thao Le's site. Those contain console messages.

Have you played RAGE? It's clearly the Slime Mutant:

If anything it's clearly NOT Slime Mutant.

Jaw is different (wider on the supposed Imp), SM has kind of a two-part head, eyes on one half and ears (unlike "Imp" which has no eyes and smooth head), SM has thicker hands, the right one is even thicker, torso is different, "Imp" is missing a good portion of its stomach...

The model you see in the PDF appears not to be normal-mapped yet, it's probably just a shot of the Slime Mutant's raw .mdl file, without much additional detail.

Yeah, it reminded me of the Slime Mutant as well, doesn't meant it is or isn't... but that's what it reminded me of.

And, in regards to the folder of "leaked images"... while there are a couple of images that look like possibly "Hell of Earth" type Doom stuff. The majority of the images just looked like RAGE DLC.

I honestly don't see how it could make him look so much different. But anyway, it's not really important at all.

Yeah, some stuff looked significantly different than RAGE but on the contrary, some other looked exactly like RAGE. Perhaps something that got cut from RAGE? There was this NY shot or two with DOOM 3 on a billboard - I wouldn't really expect such a blunt reference to a previous game in the new one. And, like I said, I don't think anyone working on it would take so much risk to just post it. The thread on DW got deleted though.

That also reminded me, I wonder what's going on with RAGE DLC. Hopefully it'll include some SP stuff. We haven't actually heard from id in a long time.

On the final note, I asked Mick Gordon about those supposed DOOM tracks on his site and he denied working on it. That kind of doesn't change the fact that they're prefixed with "DOOM4" but if he says so, I guess we can say they're not from DOOM.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I have came across an interview with John Carmack from last year's QuakeCon, I can't remember reading it. You can read it here if you like and here are DOOM excerpts:

MS: First of all we salute you for id Software's 20th year. id Software made cult games like Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein in this 20 years. What do you feel and what are your thoughts for coming years?
JC: The next couple years are all about Doom 4. Hopefully Rage will be a success and we can do a Rage 2.

MS: You told that you may publish a Super Texture Pack for Rage's PC version. Did you use this pack on latest Rage videos? Will you use "Super Textures" in Doom 4?
JC: The videos are just using the normal game data. There is a decent chance we will fill the PS3 Blu-Ray with more data than we ship on DVDs for Doom 4, but we will have to see how much trouble it is maintaining two complete builds of the data. I would love to let the PC stream extra detail over the net when needed, but that would take a significant server and bandwidth commitment that I’m not sure we can make.

MS: In QuakeCon 2009, Todd Hollenshead said that they will be showing Doom 4 in QuakeCon 2010. He said that he's sorry and they won't be showing Doom 4 in QuakeCon 2010. This year nothing has said for Doom 4. I think you are waiting for Rage to talk about Doom 4. Is that right?
JC: Yes, we didn’t want anything to overshadow Rage this year. The Doom team is also thankful not to have to go into “demo mode” for a while longer.

MS: In 2010, Audio Director Zachary Quarles tweeted that Doom 4 video can be shown in QuakeCon 2010. Was that true? If it's then why did you dropped it out?
JC: We have shown video at internal Zenimax company meetings, but we decided it wasn’t the right time to go public.

Hm, streaming additional details on PC? I kind of can't imagine that.

The rest look like either cut RAGE content, or possible RAGE DLC.

Its interesting because Kotaku actually linked the story they had yesterday to this thread, but i have said the pics that were leaked are most probably just concept pics to see what they can do with the engine and if you look closely in one it has the MacDonalds Golden Arches, unless if maccas has paid for a product placement then they are most probably just concept pics.

But it is amazing how many people are already writing off Doom 4 because of Rage and some "unofficial" leaked pictures.

It still amazes me how ignorant many people are. I constantly hear them saying that they want the new DOOM to be exactly like DOOM II. Even more, copy&past DOOM II in a new engine, they say. All that those people really want is the new game to take them back to their nostalgic feelings from 18 years ago. But anyone with a brain knows that this ain't gonna happen. No matter how old-school or faithful to the classic experience this new installment will be, it will not take you back, nor would a carbon copy of DOOM II magically make a perfect sequel.

Personally I'm looking forward to what id thinks a brand new DOOM should be. I'm all for action-packed gameplay but why would I want another DOOM II? You know what, I already have it, I've been playing it for almost 18 years, I have GZDOOM with HD widescreen resolution and fancy texture filters, I get quality WADs all the time. I don't need id to make the same game again. I'm not saying it's gonna be the best game ever but I'm infinitely more excited to see a new version of DOOM, rather than a reskinned classic that wouldn't make anyone really happy anyway.

Of course if somehow it's gonna feel almost exactly like the classic DOOM, I'm not gonna complain. Point is not to set your expectations to a ridiculous "it has to be exactly like DOOM II or it's a piece of trash" mentality.

It seems that some sites are reporting that the shots are related to Doom 4, and that what Matt is saying is that it's not representative of the final product. I'm really hoping that they're way off base with what he said, as I'm just not getting a Doom vibe from the shots at all.

Also, in the second shot down on this page, there is what looks to be a Doom 3 billboard. It's also in another shot from possibly the same area as well.

Well, the way he worded it, if you want to dig into a supposed meaning, may imply that at least some of those shots are related to DOOM. I'd say it's very possible, especially considering that one of the models has DOOM 4 folder opened up. Industrial shots have undamaged cars that wouldn't fit RAGE and a pillar of fire suggests HoE scenario.

I wouldn't be too worried though. (IF those are related to DOOM) You can see that those are very early and definitively not final passes. Grass and possibly other elements (I think the unicycle poster) are from RAGE which suggests that those are merely concept / prototype in-engine shots. Someone said those are from 2009 (can't confirm it though) which would further imply very early stages of DOOM development. I don't know what visual style they are pursuing but it's id. I think DOOM 3 looked great in that regard, RAGE looks amazing as well (even though I don't like the Mad Max setting), I really don't expect DOOM to fail with the style or visuals.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I guess my concern is that they're going to do something which feels like every other game that's post-apoc or gone-to-shit setting. One of those pics has a building which looks very New York, a setting that I'm quite frankly sick to death of, as it's completely overused and tired as hell (excuse the pun), and I don't want to see that shit or anything like it anywhere near a Doom game.
That's something that I love about Doom 2, which was that it felt futuristic and didn't have any identifiable setting (which a lot is attributable to design choice and technical limitations of course) and all we knew was that it was Earth with a very abstract implementation. Now I'm not totally against id doing something new and giving it a powerful sense of atmosphere and it's own feel, just as long as they don't do something which everyone else is doing, visually or tonally. I guess Doom is probably one of those games that is different things to different people, and one of the most important elements for me is the sense of place and the atmosphere within it. It's very distinct and is quite unlike anything else, and id should strive for a style that isn't just a clone. Anyway, I'm tired and probably not in the best frame of mind to articulate my point about what I would like from Doom 4, so I'll sum it up by saying, basically, don't **** it up id!

In the end, I really don't care what direction they go with Doom4 so long as it's well crafted and true to what id intended when they started. Doom3 wasn't what I had in mind in many ways, but it really was a solidly built game and enjoyable enough, so I could still get into it. I just don't want some publisher-rushed, half-assed, castrated money grab.

Doom 3, while competent, is one of the most forgettable shooters I have ever played. I didn't like RAGE very much either, so Doom 4 is more or less the last id game I'm willing to give a fair shake before I write them off as a has-been studio. My gaming budget isn't infinite and I'm already overloaded by games I want to buy/find time to play, but can't.

Hopefully Doom 4's overall direction is more focused. RAGE was all over the place, it felt to me id barely knew what they wanted the game to be (or alternatively, culled their vision halfway in, when they lost passion for the project). It felt like a game without soul.

For the record, I think Doom 3 was a focused design - the game "knew" exactly what it wanted to be, for better or for worse. There was very little I felt was tacked-on, it was a "pure" vision, if you will. I commend it on that, if little else.

He also mentions that he was on the team during a Pre-Alpha stage of development.

My guess would be that it already has been leaked and given that most people have already seen it, i guess id had given him the green light to post it.

And anyways, someone from id said that those shots have nothing to do with whats in Doom 4.

Without going through the link i'm guessing its the Trailer for Doom 3 BFG edition. It looks pretty good, it comes with a HD graphics, Resurrection of Evil Expansion, a new mission pack called "The Lost Missions" + the original Doom's 1 and 2.

Although this is a major kick in the balls to people who already own Doom 3 on Steam, i already own Doom 3, RoE and all the original Doom games (plus all the id library), id will probably make a BS offer of "if you own Doom 3 upgrade to the BFG edition for 50% off original price.

I will probably only get it for the new mission pack.

It's been a while since I last played Doom 3. I miss it so much! Can't wait til Fall...

They should make an id anthology vol. 2 with all releases post-Quake... o_O

And also... reintroducing Doom to gamers, I hope this is a sign of good things to come at QuakeCon :3 .

The only thing i am a bit weary of, call it a cop-out if you will, is the amour mounted flashlight and a checkpoint save system.

The flashlight was something fans did complain about but i feel its taking away the atmosphere, the sense of claustrophobia when you cant see anything, with this you might as mod it to have all the lights on.

And the checkpoint saving system, you might as well say "here lies id Software's PC gaming heritage 1991 - 2012"

I wouldn't expect anything "Doom" until Quakecon.
If id are attending E3 in an official capacity... there may be something else in the works. As in a single player DLC for RAGE... or there as part of Bethesda's group.

I'm not expecting to see or hear anything from Doom until Quakecon.
But, I'm a pessimist.

I think it has to do with DooM 4 through association.

I have always viewed id/GT Interactive through two views... one is vampire level product milkers, and the other as hard-core fan supporters. I don't know of a way to determine which is the reality, or if both co-exist or what.
What I mean is this...
Ultimate DooM was just original DooM with one episode you could download for free, but was also sold in the normal big box. Many viewed this as milking because it was a full priced product which was also "free". I saw it as a collectors opportunity and bought 4 at full price.

Then we got DooM Trilogy! Big old heavily embossed box with Ultimate DooM, DooM II, and Master Levels for DooM... most of "us" already had these individual games, but many saw this as a stupid thing as there was nothing new other than the box.

Final DooM was kind of just that. All new stuff years later, same engine etc. Awesome. Love it. Many viewed this as just "same old crap" some new levels etc. I saw it as giving us fans one more DooM engine game... in a big box! Yay!

Collectors Edition DooM comes out... it has same old DooM, DooM II, and Final DooM... BUT came with a Preview disk of DooM III! Again, just like always, many took this as insult because it was the same old tired games in a new box, with just a video on a disk. Complaints of "having to re-buy" the DooM series just to get a preview of DooM III.
I say, self inflicted, bitches. But whatever. I bought two of those at full price also. Whatever.

See the pattern here? I don't care why they do it... milk the DooM name, or catering to fans like me who really appreciate or want this stuff.

I am going to cut this here, but basically the above you can swap out Quake for DooM as the same pattern exists in that line also.

This is a bit more elaborate than a new box printing... this is remastering of the game with a bit of new content.

I don't know or really care if they are just milking the DooM III title one last time to promote DooM IV, or if they are just catering to the fans who LOVE this stuff... you can pick your own side I suppose. Maybe is both... maybe this makes the bean counters and developers both happy, or justifies both to each other.
I am glad to see it and can't want to buy it.

Yeah, I am DooMed... (this was an early image of test-fitting my DooM PC stuff to one area... it didn't fit in the end. With DooM and Quake and Duke alike, I say "Make all you want, I'll buy more." )

Quaked... again look at the different packages again of the same products.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Unless they release the BFG Edition at a full price of $60,00 (or €60,00 for us guys here in Europe) I will get this. I own D3 for the PC but I have not played the game in years; also, I never played RoE.
For a budget price of 30-40 bucks I'll be glad to pick this up and play it again.

I welcome the new armor-mounted flashlight, too, as I didn't like the way it was originally done.
However I am more wary of the integrated checkpoint system, as I recall I was struggling at the later levels when I ran low on health and had to reload earlier saves from time to time because of lack of health pickups.
Being stuck with a checkpoint where I am low on health and unable to continue and being forced to restart an entire level/chapter/mission (I'm assuming that the game will be broken down into chunks as has become common in games nowadays) may lead to a frustrating experience.

On a side note, I liked how Max Payne 3 handled this and gave you extra painkillers if you had to restart a checkpoint.

This ain't that big of news, just small speculation. I do believe that we will see some Doom 4 at Quakecon, or sometime around the release of Doom 3 BFG Edition. I could be wrong, but I'm sure all will be revealed very soon.

I have a hunch that this will be one of the biggest and best years that QuakeCon ever had yet with Doom 4, as well as Interceptor's visit and exhibits there. Should be interesting to see what goes on there. Just better hope that it'll get television coverage or at the very least web stream coverage.

I don't see how Interceptor's visit is a plus.

Quakecon will be awesome this year so long as we get...

1. RAGE DLC news
2. Doom 3 BFG Edition new info (and no, I don't mean more Doom 3 in 3D news)
3. Doom 4 news.
4. Carmack's couple hour long talk

That's all I care about from Quakecon.

RAGE has been out for almost a year, the team moved to DOOM, BFG Edition is coming and four years of development already so it seems everything is in place for the unveiling.

Somehow, though, I'm not optimistic. I can already see them focusing all attention on BFG Edition and RAGE DLC because, obviously, DOOM 4 would steal it all.

Also I don't believe they'll unveil DOOM somewhere else, not on QC. If it's not this years QC, I bet they won't do it until QC2013.

It's interesting because if they don't show it this year, then we're looking at six years of development here. By QC13, it'll be 5 plus at least a year until the release. Even RAGE, a new IP, took 4-5 years, excluding 1,5y spent on Darkness and ongoing tech development. A run&gun DOOM taking six years with a great start on the tech side is pretty crazy.

Then again, new Half-Life... Yeah.
