I remember a time when April Fools jokes were clever, to the point of actually trying to convince people they were real "stories".

While some (DNF on the Atari) were obviously made for laughs, a lot used to try and trick people into believing the story.
Now, they seem like cheap jokes that aren't even really that funny.

I came up with that one. I did that to hide the release of the Duke3D source code behind an April Fool's joke. :)

I don't know about that.

The majority of the ones I've seen online today... have been weak.
Overly obvious and lazy. A few okay ones here and there... but... meh.

Blame the Internets & social media for the all-pervasiveness of April Fools jokes. You can't do anything on this day that isn't viewed with suspicion. None of the jokes stand a chance at convincing anyone they are for real. This has been the case for many years now.

The only bits that do work are when you subvert expectations and release something for real on April 1st, so everyone assumes it is a joke. The announcements for GMail and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon come to mind. DNF aimed for something similar.

This is a nice example of a prank which was just believable enough to fool me for a moment (especially because the OP date is 31-3 rather than 1-4 in my timezone).
