What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Yeah, after all this Dopefish talk, I'd like to think that there'd actually be a game that features the funny fish as a main platform character. You would control him in 3rd-person perspective, as Dopefish moves along in underwater adventures, and you'd run into Octabrains and Sharks (as seen in Duke 3D), maybe some other underwater obstacles, and solve underwater puzzles. I hardly ever see any games made where Dopefish is actually YOU. That would be great if 3DR were to develop a game like that after DNF. There's an awesome suggestion for a game, wouldn't you say so?

Don't expect us to personally ever do Keen again. We tried going the retro route with Manhattan Project, and it sold poorly. I think we're done with that.
Now personally I would love it, but from a business standpoint, I can't see us wanting to do that. |

Actually a casual puzzle game or something along the lines of Mario Bros. underwater levels platforming would be fun. :D Like Joe said though it really wouldn't be worth their time.

Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Also, don't forget - id Software owns the rights to Dopefish. Some years ago we did get written permission to use Dopefish as a goof/easter egg type of thing as we wished, but to make a full fledged game character out of it would violate the permission we have.
That would require payments, licensening - it's just not worth it. |

I'm not sure if they would mind if someone made a cheap tribute flash game though. They would probably be flattered ;)

I personally don't think they'd care either way.

Maybe not id these days, but it might put a smile on Tom Hall's face.

Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Well, that's true - so long as it's not crap. As much as we like fan stuff, a decent amount of it is really truly NOT GOOD.
If it was good stuff, he'd enjoy it, but if it was crap, he'd go "Eh - that's nice", I'm sure. |
Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Yeah, if id Software even put together a team to create a Dopefish Adventure game of some sort, I'm quite sure that it would almost be about as bad as Aquaman for the N64 at best, now that I'm rethinking that idea.

Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
It would be cool if you could play the dopefish in the XBLA game, feeding frenzy. It's a cool game and the dopefish would fit in nicely.
Also: holy thread resurrect batman! |
Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Yeah, wouldn't surprise me that Dopefish licenses would be sold off to some offshore company to put him in some weird game, and wind up being utter junk. :D Just a matter of saying, it may be great in some eyes, but right now, I'm even wondering if there'd be anything where he'd be the character you play, and make for a solid game.

In hindsight, a golden opportunity was missed...

Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Haha :D
//nitpickymode - The erhm, rear fin of the dopefish is that of a dolphin, making him a mammal... Fishes have vertical rear fins ..! |
Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
Nitpick mode:
Which fin are you referring to? The Dopefish has a dorsal fin, a caudal fin, a pair of pectoral fins, and a pair of pelvic/ventral fins. I'm not an expert, but as far as I can see these are fish-like, not marine mammalian. Also these fish come from Gnosticus IV, so who knows how evolution worked out there. |

What i saw was the dopefish's head edited to that of a dolphin or a killer-whale... Whales of course are mammals and not fish so i was corecting that one detail there... Can't say if i actually got to the wrong thread somehow (don't ask how that is possibly making any sense ) or if perhaps, the post i was refering to was deleted or edited... |
Re: What if Dopefish were ever used as a main platform character?
The game only ever had a cult following, and that has pretty much subsided, but you could easily add Dopefish to Insaniquarium. Mods were pretty frequent for the game, and it was basically a simple matter of replacing graphic files in clearly marked directories.
The point of that is, Feeding Frenzy is also a PopCap game, so maybe it would be as easy to add Dopey there. I have the registered sequel, but I haven't peeked into the directories. |
