The future of this forum...

...is unknown at this time. Assuming these forums aren't kept around for some reason, due to 3DR closing I'll be running some new EDuke32/Duke3D modding forums on http://www.duke4.net very soon. You are all encouraged to register for accounts there and bookmark those forums in case something happens to these.

Thanks to 3DR for Duke, the source code, and for supporting the Duke3D modding community for so long!

I hope that a section for Shadow Warrior / SWP will also be created there.

If this forum disappears. Will Duke4 get a special forum sections for Duke Nukem modifications like this one has. Otherwise I think things will get a bit crowded.

Yeah, I think the Duke4.net forum should be restructured to mirror the layout of the 3DRealms forum. Otherwise it'd be a mess if everyone here goes to duke4.net.

Duke4.net will be restructured accordingly, to fit the needs of this community.

Re: The future of this forum...

Well, while this probably spells the death of DNF (not that it wasn't predictable), Duke3D HRP support does not need to be affected by this. Duke3D *IS* released as we all know, and no one prevents anyone from continuing HRP support.

Still, it's a huge bomb that has exploded here. Usually shutdowns happen quite fast, so it is possible this forum ends sooner than expected.

supergoofy 05-07-2009 11:35 AM

Re: The future of this forum...

The DNF is the new Polymer renderer and the upcoming converted HRP for Polymer.

NightFright 05-07-2009 11:39 AM

Re: The future of this forum...

It may still be that DNF will get finished *JUST* because of this. Remember Prey? It seemed it would never get released until humanhead took over. However, the hopes should not get too high. No one really knows how far they had actually proceeded with the actual playable game, and the damage to the whole thing is pretty much right now.

If some of you want to go through some of the CON coding threads here and copy useful tidbits of info that have been posted (or even save whole threads), that would be really helpful.

I would rather spend my time updating the wiki (if I had to choose between the two). Looking through a thread is a comparatively inefficient way of finding information.

I've already posted the SC-55 music packs I made over there. Not much else I think I can do. Happy to help the migration in some way, though.

So, go through the threads and post useful examples and whatnot from them to the wiki. ;)

No better way to divert all attention to 3DRealms than tell the world they're finished.

Could your servers coupe with a continuous stream of 1,000+ users for 24 hours though? Then again server hasn't even managed that... ;)

Re: The future of this forum...

Look, I dont know anything about code, you know that. But this latest news that 3D Realms is folding is somewhat of a shock. I don't know if another studio would pick up DNF, but I would like to think so. Mabey Take-2?

But if not, I was thinking nobody is more qualified to do DNF, than the Eduke and HRP teams. Hell, why not make it with "Build" and include HRP so it is true 3D? There is no limit to Build anyway. The gameplay is already there. All that would be needed is all new models and textures, and of course all new maps as well. Perhaps some new functions too. We got some real top-notch coders and mappers in here...TerminX, Deeperthought, Nightfright, Plagman, William Gee, Hendricks, Parkar, I can go on and on. Frankly, I dont know of any team more deserving of getting a shot to do it, than the Eduke and HRP crews...and SP modders on this forum.

I for one would donate, and I bet a hell of a lot of other people would too.

Is this a silly idea?

Re: The future of this forum...

Why is it silly? What team is more dedicated to Duke, and has proved the dedication? What other team can work the magic that the Eduke and HRP teams have worked? Why cant they use Build? As long as a liscense is had, Build has absolutley no limits. The game would not need Unreal engine.

If they were paid, and if they were willing to do it, I dont see what is wrong with the idea. I posted about it on the regular 3DR forums, and already the idea has gotten support...

Hopefully TerminX or Deeperthought will comment on the matter...

Well then...mabey one of the modders could make a LARGE SP pack and make Duke in Las Vegas? It would at least be something... :(

Re: The future of this forum...

Yeah, that's a much more realistic idea. With Polymer right around the corner, bright, multi-colored Vegas maps should be pretty easy to pull off.

I'm going to try and keep them going as long as possible. But given what we will likely have to do to save costs, I don't know how well a replacement server might be able to handle the traffic these forums go. We'll eventually have to cut our internet service at the office to a bare minimum, and remove our webhosting company, so they'll have to survive on some sort of shared thing, most likely. And you remember how that went over with Max Payne.

But I'll try.

Re: The future of this forum...

Sounds grim. I really hope these forums don't go away... that's definitely the most upsetting aspect about all of this for me. I've been on these forums for a long ass time, and even if the Duke modding stuff has to go elsewhere due to the uncertainty of this forum's future, I definitely do not want to see these forums go anywhere. :(

It's not sarcasm. A DNF inspiered Duke 3D mod in Vegas is obviously a plausable idea. The idea has crossed my mind more then once even before this incident. With Polymer you could probably make something pretty cool to.

So can we imply from this that 3RD are not getting rid of the office? Or is this just until end of lease, or it's sold...

Cool. :p I cant tell when Term is being serious or not sometimes. Glad that it can be done with Polymer. Time to learn the difference between Polymer and Polymost...I have been reading up on it. Hell, I might be inspired to learn to make maps just so I can get in on this "Vegas project".

Think of it as Bioshock 1 and Bioshock 2.

Yeah, as long as HRP won't crash Build/Mapster for me, I'd definitely map for Duke again. Of course, I'd have to go through some of the maps I've built back in the '90s, and bring back new versions of some of my favorites from the good ol' days.
