Gravis Ultrasound music pack

Seeing the SC-55 pack by MusicallyInspired (which is very awesome) finally made me decide to get a move on with a project i started, a Gravis Ultrasound music pack.
Although the GUS is no where near as mighty as the SoundCanvas, it is a great sound card and if you havent heard of it, well, what rock were you living under in the 90s? :D

I am recording them in 192Kbps OGG Vorbis from the game (the game running without sound and just using shift+f5 to switch tracks.) using my real GUS, the real thing sounds better than it does in Dosbox.

I have an example of what this will all sound like here

I might do an AdLib/SoundBlaster one as well.

I even can foresee next project which will come after AdLib/SoundBlaster music pack. :)
(probably somebody still love true, natural sound of computer case beeper)

@hightreason - it just a joke :)

Nice! This'll be quite interesting. I've never actually heard what the GUS sounds like in my life and I've always wondered. I do have an AWE32 but everyone says that GUS was superior because nobody really took advantage of what the AWE32 could do (I've only played 1 or 2 games where the AWE32 was well utilized).

Which Sound Blaster/Adlib card are you going to use for the SB/Adlib pack? I'd suggest something with either two OPL2 chips or an OPL3 chip so it will be in stereo, like the SBPro, SB16, or AWE32. Or an Adlib Gold. I heard some samples of that thing and it sounds gorgeous.

Re: Gravis Ultrasound music pack

I never had the pleasure of running an AdLib gold, i always wanted one and still keep looking around, but it's actually low on my list of cards i want.
I was going to use the AWE 64 as it's in a machine that has Duke on it already.
What i wouldn't mind finding is an SSI-2001, which is pretty much the sound system from a Commodore 64, but it is for IBM PC.

Re: Gravis Ultrasound music pack

Might as well put it here as well:

I started on it some time ago. It's taken ages because of many reasons - namely GUS Drivers messing me about, Sound Cards (yep, a few) failing in the machine that was recording it and cabels going missing and a lot more issues i'd rather not go into.

It's still not done yet, but i am releasing what i am refering to as the "ShareWare Version" - because it only has music for those levels.

File size : 26Mb

MegaUpload : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J0V8NT9C
That would be the prefered option, it's faster and better than...

My FTP : ftp://treason.dyndns.org/Duke%20Nuke...Share/Gus6.zip
This is only really here in case somebody has a vendetta against MegaUpload (I know people that do). This FTP is the slow and not very reliable option, and you would be lucky to go over 50Kbit/s.

I'm gonna keep working on this (and the DC Port - as soon as i find my tools for that) for now, but i might also think about my SB/AdLib pack, i was even contemplating doing a PSG-Type music pack (hmm, this is giving me ideas) hope you enjoy this, at least until i can do the rest of them, which is still difficult due to the fact my GUS plays up a heck of a lot.

Oh, also - if you poke the files about, you will notice that they are not "Normalized" the reason being is that they are recorded from the game (SFX muted) on a DOS machine, and this is the volume they play at in the game, thus i am keeping them exactly as they would sound if you had the same setup as me.
So don't start posting at me saying "These files are not normalized" - i know, but do tell me if there's any other problems.

Its been almost a year now, but I figured i'd bump this thread.

Are you continuing to work on this pack or no? :D

Re: Gravis Ultrasound music pack

Yeah, I had problems with my GUS, but I fixed that recently.

Oddly enough I was filming a video about the machine that the GUS is in this morning.

I'll try and get back to work on the music pack tomorrow if I get chance, I was just gonna leave the thread till it was done, but I assure you I will be working on it.

Interestingly I can not edit my original post, which is what I wanted to do. But anyway, here is the full version, it's only taken a year and about 6 sound cards before it could be completed. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C7ZH6JCF
