Duke3D XBLA Nominated for an Award

Late last year we released Duke Nukem 3D for Xbox LIVE Arcade to much acclaim. Not content with being just a straight port, we introduced a few features to the game, most of which were designed to take into account the connective nature of Xbox LIVE itself.

However, one of them was not geared towards LIVE play. This is the replay system from the game. We introduced a feature where when you died, you were able to go back to any point in that level you had previously played up to that point, almost effectively negating the need for traditional save games.

Today we were told that this feature in Duke Arcade has caused the game to be nominated for an award in the "Best Innovation in XBLA" category of the second annual Xbox LIVE Arcade awards. The game is up against some heavyweights as Braid, A Kingdom for Keflings, and N+.

What is different about the awards this time is you will be able to vote for the games yourself. There are instructions on how to vote on Xbox.com here, and the voting period starts on March 3rd.

If you've never checked out Duke Nukem 3D for Xbox LIVE arcade, what are you waiting for? Christmas? You can read more about the game on our website here, and you can also go to Xbox.com and queue up the download for your Xbox 360 online at this link.

I can't play Duke3D as I don't own a Xbox 360. But if I were able to vote from the website without the need of the xbox I would have voted for Duke Nukem 3D. :)

Yep, I didn't see Duke on the list either. :(

I hope duke wins, i'll inform everyone i know who has an xbox and make them to vote, i'd have sent them here, but they think that we are all old men - they obviously never visited the forums.

You don't see duke listed there because That's only some of the games nominated. The complete list is here :

http://majornelson.com/Default.aspx

Duke is in the following category:

Best Innovation in XBLA
Braid (time travel)
A Kingdom for Keflings (use of Avatars)
Fable II Pub Games (retail game integration)
N+ (level sharing)
Duke Nukem 3D (dynamic replay)

There are a lot of games being nominated for stuff that aren't in that tiny list on the xbox page.

DOOM and Marathon got updates to their graphics and features, this game got 1 change. So hearing that your not content with it being a straight port is kind of wierd, since it is just a port.

Edit: This isn't intended to be a flame, I was just being blunt on my views towards the comment.

The majority of people I have seen on forums and such haven't gotten this game because it doesn't have split screen, something that should have been in this game, given that it was aimed towards console gamers. Not to mention that most fans of duke that use consoles had fond memories of playing duke 64 with friends.

Edit: The second sentence sounded like you were trying to get more people to buy the game, from my experiance with other duke fans they would have liked a split screen feature. I also say that because if you release this on a console than it is aimed at console gamers, where split screen is a common and preferred feature for console games.

However I do hope you guys win, I have already seen the features of those other games used before but I don't recall a "dynamic replay" in any other game.

Eh? Doom got a graphics update? The only new feature besides the live stuff in Doom is Split Screen. Duke 3D got some tweaked some settings and added the rewind thing instead of co-op. All the other stuff are the same with the two games.

I always thought DOOM looked alot more polished than I would have expected for a game that old. What settings?, I didn't see anything different in Duke Nukem 3D other than the dynamic replay.

Man I hope that dynamic replay wasn't the reason the multiplayer in this game is so shoddy.

Hey, I brought the game as a single player game and have been greatly entertained by it (as I was many years ago when it was first released). The new way of handling deaths was a great innovation that I hope gets used in some incantation in Duke's next adventures.

Both Doom and Duke have the metascore stuff. They both have interfaces for XBLA. On the graphics side, if it looks more polished it's cause it's not running at 320x200 like the original game. Run Doom in Zdoom at 1280x720 at it will look better. Same goes for Duke at that resolution. Duke had that VESA thing so you could run it in 800x600 and it looks smoother in that too. Duke also has that smoothing thing if you want to use it.

Multiplayer for XBLA games is a fad that goes away after a while.

That has got to be the weirdest excuse I have ever heard for the lazy ass multi section, a fad eh?

I don't seem to recall any other game, arcade or otherwise were my multi was completely dependent on people online. I can still play and enjoy DOOM, and mulitiple other old games where online is dead.
