i need to know if my setup is capable of running Prey at 1980+1080 rez

Amd phenom 2 x2 550 black edition
2 gb ddr2-800 ram
Ati 4850 <512> not 1gb version

most people i know recommend having at least 1gb video ram on the gpu for anything over 1600ish. is this true?

I think you should be ok but you could always lower the resolution.

What do you mean with "anything over 1600ish"? In any case no, most games work with video memory as low as 256MB.
