Memories from Apogee/3D Realms #5

I started working at Apogee on Dec 14, 1992. I worked at the longest tenured offices from the start until we moved out of the building in November 2002. We moved into the offices we were at when the place closed down in May of 2009 then.

Anyway, I recall coming over to the place seeing it when it was being put together in August of 2002. The place used to belong to a medical facility. They didn't do procedures here, it was all office stuff. The place was was filled on the inside with cubes and whatnot. We essentially gutted the place, and put up our own walls and all that.

But the best part was watching the nuke logo on the floor go together. It was a pretty intricate piece of tile work, as evidenced by the pictures I have of construction:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_n4HakXFnzZQ/Sg.../101302_14.jpg

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_n4HakXFnzZQ/Sg.../101302_16.jpg

The giant Duke Nukem logo on the floor was something that was always a discussion point. From UPS drivers, to business people, to vendors, even to personal friends. Everyone was impressed by the lobby - that logo was really impressive. And before you ask, no I don't know what will happen to it.

Y'all know the last picture taken there, at least officially:

I also took this video on Saturday afternoon with my daughter:

Hey Joe, excuse me. Is it possible that you could take a picture at the things hanging on the walls and the games on the lobby? :P

ILLimit 05-10-2009 11:21 PM

Re: Memories from Apogee/3D Realms #5

oh and one more thing each action figure came with an weapon like the
octobrain came with some goo-E or slime to put in it's head, and the enforcer came with a LARD vest, duke came with a machine gun, battle lord i think maybe a helmet? and combat duke a knife.

I used that floor logo for this icon at duke4.net.
http://www.duke4.net/images/icons/dukegen.jpg

Cut the tiles up into 1000 pieces and sell them for 50$ each. Centre circle for 250$. Easy money. :)

That's actually a damn good idea. I'd buy one.. I honestly don't understand why 3DR hasn't come up with a few ideas on raising the 5mil. I would think it wouldn't be too hard honestly. There are A LOT of die hard duke fans out there.

The whole 5 million thing is still a rumor.

My guess is that it'll stay where it is for now.
Then eventually, it'll be moved along with everything else to storage or another building.

It's like the Hollywood disease? If you have money, you have no good ideas. If you have good ideas, you have no money to make them happen.

I thought about something like this, but it's not exactly going to be fun working in an office with half the stuff missing... or in this case, a giant concrete hole in the tiles at the lobby.

Re: Memories from Apogee/3D Realms #5

Does the building have to be dismantle ?...
If yes, why not do a caritative auction by selling the floor and give the cash to Police orphans...

You know people sell original Berlin wall rocks in Berlin (4 US$ for 2" big).
This is really not unusual.

It's almost impossible to remove marble tile without breaking it.

This floor is like national treasure in gamers history.
Guess the best it will be project gets saved, the floor stays there, the team returns and walks over it everyday.

Cut the whole thing out of the floor and sell it off then. It'd make a pretty cool wall decor for anyone who has a ceiling high enough to fit it.
