How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

I'm thinking about the same as Half-Life 2's, around 24 hours. I imagine it will have a lot of replay value, due to the interactivity and the possibility of unlockables.

I wish Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corner's campaign never ended.

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

Low estimate: 6 hours. Probably between 10-15 hours tops.

I would not estimate the game being over 15 hours tops in the single player campaign.

Prey averaged around 6 hours and I think it felt a bit too quick. 10-15 hours would be the sweet spot for me.

One of the things we fought with when 3DR was still together was the perception that if DNF didn't have a single player campaign that was a length commensurate to the complete time it was under development, it was going to be some sort of ripoff.

Never liked that.

The length won't matter for me. As long as I have another Duke game to play, I'll be satisfied. Good to see you posting in the forums again, Joe. :D

Yeah, I stayed away for awhile, and came back a few days ago. Don't know how long I'll stick around. I still am not thrilled that I'm not working at 3DR anymore. Loved that place. :(

Be glad you don't work in the front end. "Why can't I use this expired coupon? This other cashier let me use it. I'm getting the manager!"

"How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?"

It will probably be about 8 hours, as it seems that FPSs tend to skew shorter and shorter these days. I would ideally like it to be about 15 hours, because that is a satisfying length and it feels like you got your money's worth. Plus I just like to see all of the neat locations and story bits they could come up with. :D

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

10-15 hours would be perfect...but I cold imagine it being only about 8 hours. But most important is that you want to replay the game because of it's awesomeness! And I strongly hope Multiplayer is a very strong part too.

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

I want it to have at least 10-15 hours (30 hours would be OMFG sweet)
but after reading the leaked levels
I am sick and disappointed - best hope is 8-10 hours

What? Those levels sounded great and all fit together pretty damn well from reading the descriptions.

Half-Life 2 had a good length so that's something I hope DNF will have as well.

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

20 hours, anything less will be an utter dissapointment. 15+ years of waiting for a game that last less than 10 hours? In the computer world that = does not compute.

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

Around 8-9 hours.

alexgk 08-27-2010 09:01 AM

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

Anything above 8 hours (for a FPS) is good in my books. The important thing is how much replay-value the game has. If DNF is the game of my dreams, then I'll replay it 20 times at the very least (pretty much what I did with Half-Life 2 :)).

Yeah, I have seen the pictures from your christmas and halloween parties and also a picture of you from the "Time to grill" promo thingie. It seems to have been a blast. But how's it going with work for you? I've seen the climate regarding jobs for web admins etc., and it's not the shiniest I would say. Activision was looking for a web engineer (California) though, but you perhaps like many (including myself) dislike Activision?

Anyhow, about the topic: I think around 15-25 hours of gameplay (excluding easter egg hunting etc.) should be good enough for Duke Nukem Forever. Half-Life 2 was mentioned, and the length of that game is something to follow.

Here's the grill picture by the way for those who haven't seen it:

So the game will take 13 YEARS to beat XD !!!!!

lol, I really think that the timeframe does not matter as long as its a roller coaster the entire way. Half Life 2 was super long, but super fun too, so it was great. Others I remember playing like the original Unreal, were too long, not because of time it took to play, but because it got repetitive and you start to wonder when the end is coming so it can be over already, you don't want that to happen to DNF, even if DNF ends in a cliffhanger, it would be worth it as long as its super fun and original the whole way through.

Re: How long do you think DNF's campaign will be?

The length should fit the content... For example, Crysis is around 3 hours if I remember correctly, but it feels too long because there is naff all to do in the levels - some games, like Blood seem to short because of just how much there is in the game. When I play DNF it will take me at least a week as I am going to go around pressing the spacebar on everything and looking at every little detail with the volume up as high as it will go.

Edit: Perhaps the game WILL take forever to beat, maybe they used a Text-To-Speech type engine for Duke that generates random quotes based on keywords attached to parts of the level and the levels have a random generator like F-Zero X but better.

I know a lot of people share the same opinion as you but personally I felt that Unreal was perfect in its length. Why it was such a long game was due to the fact that the maps were gigantic in size and thus it was very easy to get lost trying to navigate through the heaps of different rooms, corridors and landscapes. I liked that about the game and that's why I just love it so much. Nowadays, I can run through the game in just a few hours including reading all the translator messages but back then it was huge.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that.

For that particular title, I can see that, I was a lot younger on my first run through, and I totally agree that you should have to feel your way around a bit before actually making it out of a level. I don't like being put on a linear track that I must follow, and if I am, you had better hide it well (hl2) so, that being said I can't really think of any other examples, I don't play many games :p

10-15 hours seems to be the agreed ideal length. I personally would be dissatisfied with less given that I don't have LIVE and my computer sucks too much to be able to play anything remotely good.

Level length as described is pah-the-tic
Originality/Creativity - f-ing sucks
90% based around South-West USA area
Writers were stuck in Western/Casino crap
The whole thing stinks of GB's self indulgent, how I would really like my life to be, how I want to be if I were really famous, how I would act if women found be attractive.

Scan through some of the concepts/levels/etc from the eduke community and you will find 1000's of far better story lines.
-
Don't like my opinion?? Well T.S.
GB and 3DR let us down big time holding onto a 13yr old script that just doesn't hold water to the other FPS games out there.

And people wonder why Joe rarely comes by anymore, and why George & Scott almost never do. Must every single word be so picked apart in an attempt to find nonexistent hidden meanings? Posts like that one from Joe add some much needed substance to threads in the DNF forum, and it's replies like this one that will just piss him off & keep him away.

I am working on a Duke FPS (not DNF)- still and at least have some work done.
I did post some of the story line, but since nobody commented on it god or bad, I'm gonna run with it.
If you ask nicely, I'll screen shot part of the level I am planning on finishing up this weekend.

Duke Nukem isn't about elaborate storylines. It's about awesome gameplay, interactivity and a lot of macho attitude. And I'm telling this as a gamer who appreciates great stories in his videogames.

Ok here a sample.

2D - rebuild - in development - DN1 - episode1 level1 (started this week)
FPS - sewer level - basics setup - still need to build maze and exit

I think it will be no longer than 5~6 hours. I know that's too short, but I'm aiming at a gears of wars / max payne games lenght average.
