According to their Producer at 2K Games at the time(now at ZeniMax) they were supposed to go gold April 1st, 2010. The same guy said that he believes they would have made it. In between the Duke Begins amended DNF publishing contract and sending the team home, 3DR and Take Two were negotiating funding for a console version of DNF along with a milestone schedule. Even though those negotiations where never completed 3DR was not only following that schedule during the negotiations, they were ahead.

Edit:

"We seen a bug list from George that he seemed to think was a good indicator of near completion at the time"

That was actually a list of resolved issues from their bug tracking software.

Edit2:

"Who gets the money from that?"

3D Realms get the money from that(After MS has taken their cut).
