What I mean is that the minute-to-minute focus of the game isn't on a love story, the focus is on surviving and stopping the bad guys, the romance sort of happens along the way while they are both caught up in the middle of all these crazy events, that's where the love story part comes into the picture. It kind of sneaks up on Max, and probably Mona, too.
Max's focus is on settling the score with the evil forces that have largely ruined his life, that's his motivation, but Mona starts helping Max out in his lonely quest and he finds out somewhere along the line that he really likes her. It develops over time and so I think the story makes sense and works quite well.
