Ranked match works fine here ( had a game about two days ago). The freezing could be a couple of things:

1.
You may need to re download the game. Delete it from your hard drive and just re download it. I've had a few hang ups while in lobbies with XBLA games and re downloading seems to work.

2.
OPEN YOUR PORTS. Most people do not do this and it can cause all sorts of annoying problems. A lot of arcade games and\or 360 retail games require that you open ports on your router, otherwise get ready for freezing while hosting\connecting to a game.

The new worms game on live is a good example. If you don't have your ports open, good bloody luck playing it online.
