I don't think we will ever know what happened really... it has been speculated so much the gray areas are not even gray anymore.
I have said it many times since the release of the internal development team, I want to know what happened about as much as wanting the game.
Tornados happen, floods happen, crap happens... but running out of money one day without warning, doesn't happen.
