If you press Escape in 3D mode the mouse freezes and it asks you on the top left if you want to quit. Just press 'N' and you'll get your mouse back. If you're in 2D mode pressing escape opens up a menu dialogue at the bottom and also freezes your mouse. It doesn't crash.
